    3. I think our founding Fathers would be appalled at the intend of these census. Our Politicians have structured it simple to earn paychecks, not to trace movement. There should be a public outcry and a lot of firings. Then maybe we can be back to basics in 10 years. Yvonne Monell

    3. I was disappointed also. No place to at least put the state you were born in. Like was said, no genealogist had a hand in that form. 2. In a message dated 3/14/00 7:04:35 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > [email protected] There is two census forms for the 2000 Census. The short form just ask name, age on April 1, birthday, relationship to person filling out form and race. The long form is 50 questions and is supposed to be more detailed. I have not seen the long form yet but the short is nothing and will be very little help in the future for research. My Aunt works for the census and she said only one in ten families will receive the long form. So for all of us that use the census to find our families, I hope it is better by the 2010 census. Jean Brand Fresno CA Descendants of James Campbell Johnston Generation No. 1 1. James Campbell4 Johnston (Campbell3, George Washington2, John William Albert1) was born August 1845 in Scott Co., VA, and died March 31, 1930 in Lee Co., VA. He married Amanda Jane Fields July 19, 1866 in Scott Co., VA, daughter of Esquire Fields and Rebecca ______. She was born June 27, 1842 in Scott Co., VA, and died July 02, 1930 in Sand Lick, Pocket, Lee Co., VA. Notes for James Campbell Johnston: Johnstons Among First Settlers At Big Branch Powell Valley News Wednesday May 27, 1992 Capture: First Settlers James C. and Amandy Johnston were said to have been among the first settlers on Big Branch in the St. Charles Community. Caputre: The Baby Parlee Wallen was said to have been the baby that Amandy Johnston carried on her back to locate a homesite on Big Branch with her husband James C. Johnston. Etta Green, former correspondent for Powell Valley News, wrote in the August 12, 1965 edition the following: "There's a place up the mountain way about a couple of miles southwest of St. Charles known as Big Branch. It gets it's name from a big stream of water that comes dashing and splashing in a big way over it's rocky course. It seems that in this section at anytime of the season nature does her best landscaping, but more especially in the springtime when new fronds in the weeping willows reach down to the water's surface; and up on the hills rising high on either side; where the dogwood, red bud and other wild trees burst into bloom. There's some pretty little homes along both sides of the stream with level space enough for lawns, gardens and some small orchards. There's a rural store and upon the hillsides some small wagon mines. But the main story is this: Way back in pioneer days there was only Big Branch bordered on either side by underbrush and trees. Some early settlers seeking a place for a new home plodded their way through snow for a considerable distance up the branch, sometimes walking, sometimes crawling through the mass of growing things. The woman (Amandy Johnston) carried a baby on her back, it's said. At least they found a place level and wide enough to locate. They improvised a shelter until a house could be built, thus the attractive community of Big Branch got underway. The baby grew up and married; became a great-great grandmother, and now if any of the descendants still live in the community they are the fifth generation. Etta R. Bowens, 61, of Big Branch in the St. Charles community, said last week that descendants of some of those early pioneers do remain on Big Branch. "I'm still here", she said. She and her husband, Elmer, 70, (retired coal miner- she retired sewing machine operator), have three children and nine grandchildren. One son and daughter and two adult grandchildren continue to make their homes on Big Branch. Parlee Wallen was Mrs. Bowens' grandmother, the baby of whom Etta Green wrote in 1965, and the Johnstons were her great-grandparents. James C. Johnston was born in August 1845 and died March 31, 1930/ His wife, Amandy was born June 27, 1842 and died July 2, 1930. Mrs. Bowens said the area was a complete wilderness when her ancestors came looking for a stream and a spring of water. In her spare time now, Mrs. Bowens makes dolls and her husband makes airplanes using discarded pop bottles. They display these and other crafts at local craft shows."
