(Picked up from the Scott County, TN EMail List. It was from Tim West, the Scott County, TN Web Page Owner.) Dear Cousin, In response to your letter, I am sorry to inform you that grandpa "Fred" died some time back and the stuff you asked about is not available. The personal property the family did not want was sold at an estate sale. All those boxes of junk did not interest a single buyer. We were able to salvage several binders for the kids homework after we sent all the paper to the incinerator. The kids really complained about havingto lug all that paper and pictures of those ugly old folks to the dumpster. An old family Bible from the 1840's did bring $ 5.00. The one from the 1870's did not sell. There also was a bunch of floppy disks that we were able to reformat and download some games for the kids to play on their new playstation. At least SOMEBODY got some good from the threegenerations work. I saw the fellow at a flea market a couple of weeks ago and he said he threw the Bible in the trash after nobody was interested in it. He said he got an offer for fifty cents for it, but would rather burn it than give it away. He seemed to be having a lot of success with some very nice Elvis paintings at his booth. The two aunts you asked about are also dead. They were such a delight and could talk all day long about the things papa had written about. I remember them saying something about some records that were copied from two courthouses that later burned. Neither ever wrote down a single thing. The letter you referred to was one he typed up and sent to lots of folks who wrote him. He laughed about them never getting any of his hard work as well as his Fathers and Grandfather who was in the Civil War . He guarded all the information carefully to the bitter end. I wish I could remember some of the things to help you, but I was bored to tears listening to them talk about the family members who were in the civil war and those silly pieces of paper he showed so proudly. I vaguely remember they had some beeswax seals and something to do with the land grants that were destroyed in the courthouse fires. I wish I could remember the story about his grandfathers evening with Jefferson Davis when he was on the run. There are also some very juicy stories that were handed down, but I don't remember them very well. Another thing I remember after he got sick was some fellow calling him and he agreed to let him come down and copy all his material. He told him he would call him back when he felt better. Papa mentioned something about letting the society the man was from have all his work since nobody in the family cared anything about a bunch of people who had been dead for 200 years. Papa died the next week. I am so sorry papa and the two generations wasted so much of their life on such worthless hobbies and hope your family will follow something more interesting. We enjoy Bingo and bowling very much here in Pleasantville. I really enjoyed hearing from a long lost cousin and would like to hear back if you find anything important. The kids need the computer for their games and I need to watch the "Millionaire" show. Thank you, Cuz, Tammy Jean
I am trying to find out information on Matthew BARNETT of Edgefield, SC. I found an entry in a KY deed that states the following: "July 10, 1829. Andrew Rodes, heir of MATTHEW BARNET of Edgefield, SC to William Rodes of Edgefield, SC, collection of monies coming to him from the estate." My gggg grandfather was the Andrew Rodes (Rhodes) mentioned above. He was living in Whitley Co. KY in 1829. I am trying to find out how Andrew and Matthew are related. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kay Philpot [email protected]
To the person who posted the URL of the shipping c1800 a few days ago, my eternal thanks. I navigated my way around the website and found the reference to the "Kate" arriving in Australia. Although I already had details of my ancestor arriving on 18th November, 1854, I checked the two online references. My ancestor was not listed, so I emailed the person representing the listings and today received information additional to that which I already knew. The big find was that I now have information from the ship's passenger listing which recorded that my ancestor's husband was deceased. I had suspected as much as he appeared on the 1851 census, but didn't arrive in Australia. Again, thank you. The slimmest leads are often the most fruitful. My source (Oswald Jett, in his book about Hancock County and the frontier) has William b. Feb 1760 marrying Susanna Short 4-26-1804 in Washington County. Naturally, this makes William a really old guy by the time he's having children, so your date looks better. Then his children are Byram (b. ca. 1807), Solomon (b. 9-15-1808), Nancy (b. ca. 1811), William (this one's mine) (b. ca. 1813), James (b. ca. 1817), Rebecca (b. ca. 1818), Reason Y. (one of my favorite names) (b. ca. 1823), Mary Jane (b. ca. 1825), and Basha Ann (b. ca. 1829). I'm not sure how Oswald makes these conclusions, but I think at least some of this is probably interpolated or guessed from census records, etc. Let me look at some more Susanna Short Barnett stuff here, because I think -- well yes, here it is-- Nancy Barnett marries Japheth Skinner "at the home of her mother, Susan Barnett, near Pellville" (1853). but your record has Susanna dying in 1833. Well. As I said, I don't know what Oswald's sources are, and that indicates I need to check his stuff out more thoroughly! Thanks for sharing. Good luck on your search! Pam << Hello Paula! Beverly Thought you might want to check out the Olive Tree genealogy index for passengers. It begins with the ships with Columbus and Magellan (sp.?) and records for some ships in the early 1600's. It interesting to find there are list for convicts also being sent to the United States and foreign islands such as Jamaica and other islands that we think of exotic today. I don't know if it could help you but thought it may help. Address is rootsweb.com/~ote/ship_1800.htm, I think or just be in Olive Tree Genealogy. You may want to put index to passengers list also. Paula :-)
Hi Beverly: The United States did not begin keeping lists of foreign passengers aboard ships until 1820. If your ancestor came to the American Colonies prior to the American Revolution: If they were English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh- they were British Citizens and would not have to give allegiance to the British Crown If they were German, as in your case, they may well have gone to England before coming to America. They probably would have given their allegiance to the British Crown in England. They would have sailed aboard a British flagged vessel.Because they were sailing from a British port to a British port, there would have been no passenger list. The only colony I know of that required oaths of Allegiance at immigration time to the colony was Pennsylvania. Many of those oaths are published in Rupp's 30,000 (something like) Immigrants to Pennsylvania. It is possible Germans coming to Pennsylvania may well have moved on down to Virginia. I would think they probably would have served out their indentureship, if any, in Pennsylvania. It is possible the person who bought their indenture might have moved on to VA and brought the indentured person with them. If this happened they may well have come down the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania through the Shenandoah Valley. There were some Germans in the early years of Virginia brought over by Gov Spotswood. These were the Germana Colony Germans. They would have been in Eastern-Central VA. I forgot the exact years, but, I would say your people were too young to have been a part of this group. You need to check Cavaliers and Pioneers (about 6 volumes) and Adventures of Purse and Person and Greer's Early Virginia Immigrants for lists of people whose passage to Virginia was paid for by others. These ARE NOT immigration lists. They are lists of those who paid the passageof others and were getting land from the government for payment for the passage money. Thirdly, there were many German immigrants coming into Maryland. There are lists of people who received land for paying the passage of others.-similar to Virginia. First you asked about indentures 1700-1735 and then say your people were born in the 1740's. Indentures were contracts. The indentures, if you find them will be in the county records. As another note on Germans. The first mass migration of Germans to America was in 1709 in New York. You should check books compiled by Hank Z Jones. He has done a remarkable job tracing many of these families backward from New York to their place of immigration in Germany. Hi Glenn: My name has an e at the end of Barnette. My grandftaher added the e in the 1920's. The story he told me was that if we spelled our name: Barnet we would be Jewish Barnett we would be English Barnette we would be French. So, my grandfather was born English and I was born French! I had a neighbor in Atlanta, GA. One day she informed me her maiden name was Barnett. (Maybe it was Barnet, she did not spell it for me) I knew she was Jewish and I knew she was born in Poland. Something told me to ask her what her name was BEFORE it was Barnet(t) She told me it was Berjenski (or however she might have spelled it) MIC Mic Barnette writes a genealogy column in the Houston Chronicle. Hi, Any chance you have a Shadrac BARNETT who was a son of Uriah BARNETT? It's just a wild guess since our Shadrac, possibly Shadrac P., BARNETT was born abt. 1820 and lived in Georgia in the Carrollton, Carroll County, GA area.....but don't know where he was born nor who his parents were. Shadrac married an Ann FIELDER whose name was possibly Martha Ann FIELDER.....?? They had a son named James Thomas BARNETT who married Alice Lucinda NICHOLS and they lived in Temple, Georgia and they had children, Thomas Henry Shedrick/Shadrac, William/John William?, Earl Marcellus and Allie Ann. Any connection......maybe???? Thanks. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick - Barnett
Trying again. I am aware that this is an old request, but perhaps a chance. A Uriah Barnett (b. abt 1783) was granted 250 acres in Franklin Co. GA in 1817 but don't know which URIAH. Other Barnetts granted land there according to 'HEADRIGHT & BOUNTY GRANTS 1756-1909": Nathan 575 acres, 1785; Wiliiam, 1788; Daniel, 1785 John and/or Johnathon, 1787 & 1797; and Carolina 1796. Uriah was married to Kesiah Isley. Anyone have any info on this Uriah Barnett. Roy Reeder
I am searching for information on two Barnetts. First, John H. Barnett, b. abt 1874. Married Ida B. Hower on Feb. 15, 1894 in Adams Co., IN. Ida was born about 1874 and died in 1966 in Wells, Adams Co., IN. Second, Orpha Barnett, b. abt 1880. Married John S. Cloud, b. Nov 18, 1878. Probably lived in Adams Co, Indiana. I believe that these two may be linked to my G-G-Grandmother, Viola M. Barnett, b. Mar 9, 1872, married Alva Curtis Hower in Adams Co. Lived in Decatur area according to the 1908 directory.
