    1. [BARNETT] DNA

    3. I have an Uncle willing to take the DNA test, but his finances are extremely tight at the moment - as are mine. Would all probable descendants of William Graves Barnett (we are documented solid with marriage, death certificates, etc. to William Barnett in KY) be willing to share the costs? We would certainly all share the benefit of knowing for sure we have the correct William Barnett. Thanks. Gwen Gwen Stuart GStuart1@cfl.rr.com At the World's Most Famous Beach!

    1. [BARNETT] Barnett DNA Project
    2. Mic Barnette
    3. Hello Everyone: I just wanted to keep you updated on the status of the Barnett Surname project. My DNA marker results came in last week, I have posted them on the Project website. You can visit the website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com -just scroll down to the DNA link. At present we have three people who have actually returned their test kits and several who have rquested to join but who have not actually placed their order for the test kit. The marker results for one person have come back and two more are due in a couple weeks. It will get more interesting as other some in that match one another or establish non relationships with others. The more people we have testing the more we will learn about Barnetts-period. I have added quite a few things to the website including the 1790 census for most states. I have hopes the website will be a place people can relate to and use as a reference to see how many and where various Barnetts were located. A new book has been published listing all the people on the Dawes Rolls (about 1902). There are a number of Barnetts on the Rolls. There are Barnetts listed in several of the five Civilized Tribes- Creek, Cherokee and probaly a couple more. I know about some of those who were Creek but not about the others. It would be good to document some of these lines with our project. I may list the names of the Indian Barnetts on the website one of these days in the near future when I get enough time to place them there. Anyone with a genealogical Barnett website is invited to link our to theirs and we will be hapy to place a recipocal link to theirs. There were some English Bernards who settled in Virginia about 1647 some of whom may have been called Barnett. There was also a family of Bernards who were French Huguenots who came to Goochland and Powhattan County, VA about 1699. It is possible some of them may have gone by the Barnett spelling. If anyone knows anyone of these families I would especially like to have them participate in the Barnett DNA Project. If you are a woman and can not participate in the test or if your name is not Barnett you can still sponsor one of your cousins who is a male with the surname Barnett. In fact, if there are several people intestested in a specific Barnett lineage each of several people could put some money in a kitty and collectively sponsor a male Barnette who can take the test. This way the cost of the test would be spread over several contributors and not be born by just one person. If and when there somes a time when there are distinctive surnames such as Bernard, Barnard, Burnett, Bernhardtt, etc names they can test with our group but eventually they might wish to depart out and form a group of their own. Actually, when test results are returned to the testing company, Family Tree DNA, the ersults go into the main database and they make a report giving any matching results with others in the database no matter what the name is. I think this will be very helpful in the long run. Thanks, MIC

    3. Carolyn: I do not know where you live in Texas. Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston all have an excellent collection at their genealogical libraries. In addition you can search TexShare on the Internet if you have a library card which is free from your local public library. Your librarian can tell you how to access TexShare. On Texshare you can search Heritage Quest 1790-1930 (what they have online. What is not now online will be added later this year) censuses free. Without the library card there is a subscription fee. OR you might wish to join Ancestry. They have much of the 1790-1930 census online. If you have a male Barnett cousin or relative ask them to join our Barnett DNA surname project. I have been working on the website. I have the 1790 Census for Barnetts of most all states on the website. My DNA marker results are posted and results for a couple more people are expected in the near future. It will be start to get interesting when more Barnett results come in. http://micbarnette.bravepages.com scroll down and click on the DNA project. MIC

    2. Mic, thank you so much for he information and the help I certainly will follow your advice . i know Berry W. had a son named Matthew abraham , he mostly just went by abraham he was born in 1834 in Georgia. He married a Mary Ann Veal in June 1853. Somewhere around 1900 it could have been a few years earlier than 1900 he moved his family to Robertson county Tex I found him on the 1900 census there. But I didn't see Berry W. in his household I"m thinking he might have been already dead. Abraham was his eldest son. He also had a son a little younger than Abraham named William P. He married Mary Ann Veals , abrahams wife sister her name was Catherine they had a son named joseph Barnett Living with his grandfather alexander veal in Paulding co. Ga in 1880 the boys age was 17. Matthew abraham & Mary Ann Veal are buried at Mt. Pleasent cem. in Robertson co Tex i have been there many times, also abraham was a CSA vet. Carolyn Stephenson

    3. Carolyn: I have played around with the census records for a short while tonight.. With the sparse information you gave, I was able to trace Berry from Etowah County, AL back to Cherokee County Georgia in 1850 fairly easily. I also see he is there in 1840. He probably married in the 1830s and so would not be head of a household in 1830. In Cherokee County, Ga 1850 and 1840 I see there is also an Adam Barnett who is age 51, 14 years older than Berry. There is a good chance Adam is an older brother or relative. Also in Cherokee County 1850 there is a Tabitha Barnett aged 70 born in SC. When I look at SC 1830 Census I see an Adam Barnett in Pickens County, SC of the age category to be the Adam in Cherokee Co, Ga. in 1840. He also has a similar family make-up to be the same Adam. In Pickens County, SC 1830 Census the oldest Barnett in the county is Elijah. He is still there in 1840 as age 50-60. My guess is this is Berry's father or at least a relative. In 1820 and 1810 I see an Elijah in Pendelton County. He may or may not be the same as the Elizjah in Pickens later on. My guess is it is the same person. There are other Barnetts there as well. My suggestion is to concentrate on Pickens and Pendleton County and see what you have. Assuming Elijah died in Pickens County there should be probate records. If Elijah had a wife Tabitha I think you would be well on the road to proving these are the same people. I also recommend you do some research in Etowah County, AL where Berry is in 1880 and in Cherokee County GA where he is from 1840-50 and probably up until 1880 when he moved to Alabama in the mid to late 1870s. You need to be sure the people in South Carolina are the same people who were later in Georgia and Alabama. Maybe someone on this forum knows something about Elijah and/ Tabitha and Adam and can verify or clarify some of what I am speculating. Do not take what I have said as gospel. Use it to further your research. Check libraries near you. There are a number of books published of South Carolina county record abstracts. If you do not locate books you can borrow microfilm from the Mormon library in Salt Lake City and use it at a Family History Center near your home. It will cost you $3.50 per roll of microfilm. You can locate a family history center by going to the Mormon website at www.familysearch.org . If you find I am correct or even close in my suggestions you can send me a check for a Million Dollars<smile>. 3. Hi Folks I have added the Barnett enumerations from the 1790 census of the extant states to the Barnette DNA website. I have labeled the pages Migrations- (the state name)- 1790. these links are at the bottom of the page. I may move them to a more specific page later particularly as I add more information to the website. I may move them to the Barnett Links page. Just go to the fllowing website, scroll down to find the DNA website link and click on the link. http://micbarnette.bravepages.com/index.html As you go through the census if you can tell me something about the people- where they came from to get to that county and where they went after they left. You can get an idea of what I am talking about by checking out the Spartanburg, Lancaster and York County, SC and Granville Co, NC entries. One of the things we hope to do with the DNA Project is identify which Barnetts were where and how are they related to Barnetts in other places, if at all. The project will take in both the science of DNA and traditional research using records and books. If you have a website with Barnett information on it I would be happy to make a reciprocal link. Thanks, MIC

    3. Thanks Kelly, It is very nice of you to do this. I just found yesterday some more of my ancestors imformation Thomas Barnett b abt 1730 and son Thomas b in 1750's in NC and York Co SC. then son William b 1770 and on FWD. Now to try to find all their siblings. Still have to connect to the immigrant to pa as we are said to have come form Ireland. Will maybe get more hlp here. Yes He is in someone's life and family and should be remembered. Many people are being cremated of today. Cem plots have gone sky high, caskets etc have also gone out of sight. And most states , if you don't have these prepaid and didn't leave money for them will cremate you anyway. They won't pay for those items as they used to do even though on a cheap lowest cost also as they say a pine box funeral. They won't even help you with medicine and you have to go without. I have a whole purse full of prescriptions of the last several yrs that I couldn't buy and had to go without and am still going without medicine today as well as my spouce who needs his to function proprerly. Whennthey give you a raise in SS, they have delted something and or uped the cost of the medicare, then all the other utilties etc know you get it so up costs as well and you end up with less than you had the yr before as we have. we lost abt 75.00 in Jan due to this. got abt 2.oo left of raise in check. I told my spouce that if I find out I'm going to die soon I am going to goto the woods and disapear, then I won't have been a burdon to anyone with a funeral etc . 3. I am submitting this in lieu of an obituary. There is no obit for this person, as was requested. Since I am not very familiar with him, I don't have much information. Clayton Thomas Barnett (Willisville, IL) died May 30, 2003. He had numerous health problems, including inoperable cancer that had masticized to his brain. He is survived my many family members. There will be no funeral or viewing. His request was to be cremated. He was the brother of Robert Edward Barnett (living), Nanalie Barnett (married name unknown - living), Bascum T. Barnett (deceased), and others unknown. Unfortunately, I am not aware of his age, guess him to have been in his 80's. I was not sure if this would be of interest to anyone out here, besides myself. I just thought he deserved to be remembered. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Calendar - Free online calendar with sync to Outlook(TM). http://calendar.yahoo.com

    1. [BARNETT] Barnett DNA Project Website
    2. Mic Barnette
    3. Hello Everyone: The Barnett DNA Website is online. When you get on the page scroll down for the DNA link. I would be happy to make reciprocal mutual links to Barnett genealogical websites. Let me know where they are. We have two participants signed up and about 3-4 pending. If you know a living male named Barnett ask him to consider testing for the project. Let me know if you find problems on the website. Thanks, MIC http://micbarnette.bravepages.com/

    3. Maxine Wilton gave me the link to the Rootsweb page where all this has been posted. You of course cannot "accept" it without reservation, but so far it matches what I had. I do not have any proofs, esp including marriage and birth certificates. However, the parents I had, and which match the pages on Rootsweb, are John Barnett the 3rd and Rebecca Holcomb. John was born in PA but I don't know where this marriage took place, although I would guess it was VA.
