The Barnett DNA Surname website has been updated. See particularly the participant and Results pages. The website address is http://micbarnette.bravepages.com To date there have been three participant results returned and two more expected within the next couple weeks. The three that have been analyized all show they are related. Two participants are a 25 for 25 marker match The third matches the first two 24 for 25 markers. The two that match have South Carolina ancestry and presumably (one does have ) both have Virginia ancestry. By having a complete match the indications are these two are definitley have a common ancestor possibly within a few generations of where they have been researched. One participant descends from JoRoyall (a Revolutionary soldier) who was born 1758 in Goochland County, VA but moved to Spartanburg, SC about 1780. He is a grandson of John Barnett 1689-1756 of Goochland County, VA. The second participant has his ancestry traced to John Barnett 1792-1861, possibly of Greenville Co, SC which is next to Spartanburg, SC. If anyone recognizes this John Barnett 1792-1861 ( wife was Nancy) please let us know. The third participant descends from Nathan Barnett Revolutionary War Soldier born 1729 in New Kent County, VA and died 1804 in Greene County, Georgia. He also descends from Nathan Jr, son of Nathan Sr and Nathan III, son of Nathan Jr. This also President Lyndon Johnson's ancestor. The indicator in this case leads us to believe there is strong evidence the Goochland and New Kent County Barnetts are related. More research is needed to prove how that relationship is manifested. It is a fluke that these three particpants match. None of the participants have ever met or know each other. It would be nice to get more participants to take the test and study how other Barnett lines relate to the one already established. MIC
Lorraine: If you have any living males in your family currently named Barnett that you are related to or know any, let them know we have the Barnett DNA study going. Right now most of us involved in the testing are Americans. We would welcome cousins with proven ancestry in Austrailia or on the British Isles side of the Ocean to be in the test group to see if and who we might be related to and where. Two test kits have been returned in the past few days and a couple more will be in in a couple weeks. I need to go into the website and update it to reflect what is being found out to date. Anyone interested can go to our website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com or to the Family Tree DNA website at http://www.familiytreedna.com MIC

My Indiana Barnett line went from Kentucky to Missouri (Independence, which is right on the Kansas line, and about I seem to remember about an hour from Arkansas). They moved back east to Indiana. Many are found around the Evansville area. Unfortunately for your question, I do not have a Monroe Barnett nor a Marshall Barnett listed in my files. ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley Zschokke To: BARNETT-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, July 14, 2003 11:26 PM Subject: [BARNETT] RE: BARNETT-D Digest V03 #90 The Indiana Barnetts might just give me the lead I'm looking for! Hi Mic, I've seen Glenn Barnett quite a bit in my research. He bought federal land (see Perry Co. Land Records excerp below) and I have him listed on the 1820 and 1830 census. I'm building a list of all Barnetts that appear in the early records of Perry Co. and trying to investigate each in hopes that I'll find a connection. So far I found some really interesting families and stories, but none that I can prove are linked to my ancestor. I have heard about the Surname DNA project, but this is my mother's mother's family. To get a direct male Barnette from our line we'd have to go back to my grandmother's brother's sons. I'll have to see if anyone in my immediate family knows any of these people and we'll ask them if they'd like to "donate for the cause". As a biology major, I thought this was pretty interesting when I read about the whole thing. I will definitely check back to see what results the project is generating. Pre 1908 Perry Co. I am administrator of the Barnett Surname DNA Project. . The Project has a website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com Just scroll down and click on the Project link. At present we have 6 people named Barnett in the test group. One participant's results are posted. We have two results due any day and two more in a couple weeks, plus one or more comming that we know about after that. It will be interesting to see what we come up with. Naturally, for the study of the surname we need as many people named Barnett as we can find. After a while we will see patterns and will be able to identify associations between groups of Barnetts in one place and know they relate to Barnetts in another place. The test will also disprove what some people believe to be true about connections of one family in one place to a Barnett family in another place. So, the DNA study will prove some things and disprove others. The test is based on Y-Chromosomes that are passed down from father to son each generation since the begining of time. The person taking the test has to be a male currently named (born with the surname) Barnett. If you know of someone from line who is currently named Barnett we would like to have them tested and compare the results to others taking the test. Groups of researchers, related to but not currently named Barnett or women, can sponsor a someone named Barnett. Most of your questions about the project are answered on the website. Otherwise feel free to contact me if you have further questions or wish to join the project. Also we are adding information to the website that will be of benefit to anyone working on the Barnett surname. For one thing we have the 1790 Census for Barnetts for each state online. There is a Link page . If you have a website concerning your Barnetts please let us know and we will gladly link to it. Thanks, MIC mic@barnettesbooks.com MIC

I am looking for information on Levi Marion Barnett(e), b. 9/7/1835, d. 12/7/1919 married Margaret Morrison in 2/24/185?, all events taking place in Perry Co., Al. Levi was my gg grandfather and I cannot figure out who his parents might have been. I believe that his mother's first name was Frances. I find him in the 1850 census as a teenager living with Frances Barnett (see the census detail below). I also assume that William Barnett is some sort of male relative. Levi and Frances were living next door to William Barnett in 1850 and Frances is later found living in his household. I do not believe that William and Levi are brothers as Levi states that both his parents were born in GA and William lists his parents as being born in SC. Maybe they were cousins or nephew/uncle? Chairmaking is a prominent profession of these Barnett's. I believe that Levi's parents would have come to Alabama sometime between 1815 and 1830, from Georgia, maybe stopping at other locations in Alabama before arriving in Perry Co. It has been suggested that the Frances listed in the 1840 & 1850 census that my ancestor is living with was Frances HEARD Barnett (wife of John Jeremiah BARNETT, married in Morgan Co., GA 07 Jun 1815). There were a lot of Heard families that arrived in Perry Co. during the right time frame, and there was a Jeremiah Barnett that bought 3 plots of land in Perry Co. in the 1830's, but I haven't been able to tie any of this to Levi. Any connections, pointers or just suggestions of other ways to research this would be greatly appreciated. Carter Barnett named a son John Berry Barnett. Carter Barnett was born about 1760, Camden NC. He married Mary Linville (widow, born 1764) about 1799. John Berry Barnett was born in Roane, TN. It is believed that Carter was married before 1799 and the question arises--was his first wife a Berry? Thanks, Shirley
