He took on this name after his mother's marriage. His real last name is still kind of a mystery but the leading clue is McGilbert. The family legend about Joseph william Zirlott was that he was active with the prate Lafitte in Louisiana during the battle of New Orleans and the preceeding years. I have not been able to substantiate any of this so far. However, the years and locations do match up, so we will see. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: RobertaEstes13 Surnames: barnet, barnett Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.barnet/101/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hatteras Island DNA Projects Hatteras Island is a very unique place with an incredibly interesting history and geography as well. . Hatteras Island is the location where the Lost Colonists indicated that they went, to join their friends, the Croatoan Indians. . Hatteras Island has a long history of shipwrecks, with many families carrying the oral history that they descend from shipwreck victims. . Hatteras Island has an equally long oral history that many of the current residents descend from the original residents, the Croatoan (later the Hatteras) Indians. . Early records confirm his history in various ways. For example, by 1710, the Farrows, O'Neals, Hoopers and Wahabs were reported to be "half Indian and half English". . The isolated geography of Hatteras Island served to discourage a lot of movement to the island after the initial land grants were awarded and free/cheap land was no longer available. . The isolated geography prevented or discouraged intermarriage with people not island residents, creating a rather closed community, allowing us the unique opportunity to reconstruct the original island residents from their descendants today. I have compiled a list of early island surnames from deeds, wills, tax lists, militia and other documents. These surnames represent the early island residents up through about 1800. We would like to be able to reconstruct the ethnicity of the earliest island families, especially the wives whose surnames have been lost to time. Using DNA, we will be able to reconstruct those families and help people who cannot identify their ancestors' families to reconnect. Author: sh_j Surnames: Barnet Sprot Bingham Johnson McKnight Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.barnet/99/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A cemetery dating back to the 1700's was discovered in Charlotte, North Carolina this week. Posting this information for those who may be interested. They are looking for possible relatives. I posted this under surnames whose graves are recorded to be here. Hope it helps someone. Construction uncovers old cemetery Graves and remains dating back to the 1770s found on expansion site LINDSAY POLLARD [email protected] Construction crews working on an expansion of Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy have unearthed grave markers and remains dating back to the 1770s. "Here lies the body of Thomas Barnet," one of the markers reads. "Deceasd May The 3rd, 1776. Aged 22 years." The markers and remains were found late last month where the hospital is building a new medical office building and parking deck at Vail Avenue and Caswell Road. After four gravestones were found March 22, hospital officials contacted the N.C. Office of State Archeology. Work was halted while archeologists scoured the site. Nothing was found, and construction crews were cleared to continue working, said archeologist Chris Espenshade. But, on March 27, a bulldozer turned up bones and work was stopped again. Espenshade and colleagues from New South Associates then found skeletal remains and 13 graves. New South Associates is a Greensboro firm that specializes in archaeology, history and preservation. Espenshade did more research and found that hospital land on Vail Avenue had once been home to Spratt Cemetery, a family burial ground that had been scattered over the years. Records on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg History Web site (www.cmstory.org) indicate that 13 people were buried there. The state requires that the hospital advertise the discovery in hopes of reaching descendents. It cannot move the bones or test them until 60 days after a formal announcement is made. That is expected soon. Working around the site will be challenging and pricey, said Scott White, media relations director for Carolinas HealthCare System. It will cost $100,000 to $150,000, he said. Said White: "It's the right thing to do." Seeking Relatives Graves found at the construction site could belong to people who are recorded as being buried at Spratt Cemetery. . Thomas Barnet . William Barnet . Mary Sprot . Andrew Sprot . Jean Barnet . Mary Barnet . Hugh Bingham . Joseph Bingham . Mary Bingham . Samuel Bingham Jr. . Esther Johnson . James McKnight . I'm so excited, it's hard to think! I believe that my great grandmother Nina Messer is one of Frankie and John's daughters. Nina was born Dec. 24 abt 1908-1910. I have been looking for her history, as has my family for years. One of the old family stories was that the family used to sing an old song about Nina's parents. "Frankie and Johnny were Lovers." I found a Nina Messer in the 1910 census, listed under Nina Messel. It was also "rumored" in the family that her mothers maiden name was Barnett. I was not sure if the census was correct, because I was looking for Frankie's maiden name wich was not listed. I have searched every thing possible to try and connect a Frankie Barnett to a John H Messer. I believe we are related! According to the census, besides Nina, they had two other daughters, Maud and Marie, along with two brothers Henry and Arvell. Maud and Marie were born in Kentucky, while the others were born in Tennesee. My great grandmother married a man by the las! t name of Lamping, and raised her family in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky. She died there in 1987. We were also told that either the Messers, or the Barnetts are Cherokee indian. I was told that my grandfather Louis Messer Lamping resembled John H Messer. I would love to hear back from you and to know anything you might have heard or ran accrossed. I can't find marriage records or anything on John or Frankie, you have been my only hit! Please contact me with any info- [email protected] Thank you.
