Genealogists must realize that the orthography of the 1800's was pretty much phonetic and that the majority of individuals were illiterate. In many cases there was no "correct" spelling of surnames. The surname MOWRY,for instance, has 88 variations. Is it any wonder that BARNS and BARNES are used interchangeably. Chuck
