    1. [BARNES] FINAL WORD from list manager-- virus alert issue
    2. Jen's Gen
    3. This issue has been coming to the list for a week now. I have posted the related guideline and have dealt with each poster privately. Please stop any more posts about this issue unless your post to me privately. >From now on, anyone who posts concerning this recent issue or any other off-topic issue will be moderated until the issue is settled with me and/or the list. Now... Let's get back to posting information about our BARNES Kinfolks and see if we fine more info and help possible cousins. When it comes to helping each other, this is a great group of folks. Let's stay on the genealogy track where we do our best helping others. Jennifer Sherwood Braswell BARNES-admin@rootsweb.com

    3. Jerry and all, What has happened is someone has gotten a virus because of not feeling they needed a virus checker. This virus is sending info out to all addresses in that person's e-mail program. I've seen the same one on several different lists. Just use the delete key and continue on as usual. George

    3. Maybe we could all exercise a little patience. This has been a really nice list, and no one, not anyone has ever sent, or even attempted to send a mean spirited or discourteous message. People do make mistakes, but we've been fortunate because there really haven't even been that many of those, and they have been very honest mistakes. Sure it's inconvenient, but all ya gotta do is push the little delete button and it's over with. Courtesy and understanding to one another is far more important than a spent moment or two deleting an unwanted message. Including this one. 3. Several list members have expressed concern over any damage they may have caused to their PC by the deleting the file mention in the virus alert that come to the list last week. Rather than discussing it here, you are welcome to e-mail me and I will send you some links that will help explain what the file does and whether you need to reclaim it. Also, a link I have chosen will tell you how to recover it if you wish to do so. REMEMBER...any time a post comes to you, and informs you of a virus, etc. and tells you to send to every address in your address book....it is a hoax. I will try to locate some links that each of you can use to review if you ever have a question about such posts again, and that way, the list will not be affected. I will post these in a revised Welcome message and in the taglines and digest administrivia. And a reminder : ROOTSWEB is configured in such a way that viruses do not come through official ROOTSWEB list mail. Also,I want to apologize for not being available when the first post concerning this issue arrived to the list. I was away for the holidays. Jennifer Sherwood Braswell BARNES-admin@rootsweb.com

I have found that virus and deleted it. You must do the same and pass the message onto everybody in your address book. The virus (jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee. We are told that the virus sits quietly in the computer for 14 days before doing its damage. It is sent automatically by the address book, whether or not you have sent an Email to the recipient. Here is how to check if you have the virus and how to get rid of it. YOU MUST DO THIS, 1.. Go to "start". Choose the "Find" option 2.. In the file folder option type in the name jdbgmgr.exe 3.. Click on "find now" or "search" 4.. The virus has a teddy bear icon next to the name jdbgmgr.exe. DO NOT OPEN IT!!! 5.. Go to "Edit" on the menu bar and choose "select all". This will highlight the offending file without opening it. 6.. Now go to "File" on the menu bar and select "delete". It will then go to the Recycle bin. 7.. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THAT THEY CAN DELETE IT FROM THIER ADDRESS BOOKS 8.. To do this 9.. Open a new Email message 10.. Click the icon of the Address book next to the "To" 11.. Highlight every name and put in "BCC" which means blind copy 12.. Copy this message and paste it in the Email 13..
