Does anyone know of a connection between Elijah W. Barnes and family of Jersey Co., IL and Frank and Jesse James? Beverly
My g-g-grandfather was Richard Barnes. According to the best information I have at this time, he was born on 8 Jan 1811 in KY. He married Margaret Craig on 26 May 1835. She was born on 30 Jan 1812. Their children and birth years include William, 1836 KY; Mary Elizabeth, 1838 KY; Charles Christopher, 1840 KY; Anna Jane, 1848 MO; and Walter Cyrus, 1855 MO. Unfortunately, I have no earlier information regarding Richard or Margaret and that is what I am seeking. If anyone has earlier information about Richard or Margaret, I would much appreciate hearing from you. -- Fred Nickols nickols@att.net
George W. Barnes, born in Maine November 7, 1800. Believed to have emigrated from Maine to Cleveland, Ohio and was in LaPorte Co., Indiana by 1833. Spouse was Alvina (maiden name unknown). George W. died July 28, 1844 in LaPorte Co., IN. His will mentions his wife, Alvina and four siblings. I'm attempting to place these children with the appropriate family line. I'd also like to know Alvina's maiden name. Can anyone help? Joseph - Other than finding his name in the brother's will, I know nothing about him. He was still alive in July 1844 (named as heir in will). Hannah (Barnes) Wilcox - Born abt. 1799 in Maine. Hannah's daughter, Celestine Wilcox, was born May 24th 1834 in Ohio and "was brought by her widowed mother to LaPorte county, Indiana, in the same year". Perry Barnes - Born October 24, 1813 in Maine. Married Hannah Lafferty. Perry also located (and died) in LaPorte Co., Indiana Olive (Barnes) Marston - Born abt August 1801 in Maine. Married Rev. John C. Marston. Olive & husband John also located to and died in LaPorte Co., Indiana Thanks for any and all assistance. D. Nelson
Hello Tami - could you give us a location in the US they these Barnes' were in, and possible dates? That would narrow your search field down somewhat. Dot

I have found a little more information in my search. I believe my g-grandfather was James Franklin Barnes married to Nancy and they had six children four boys, Matt, James, George and Jack two daughters one Janie and the other I don't know the name? As I stated earlier they lived in Missouri and Oklahoma. As a child I remember hearing something about Macon, Missouri and Georgia. If anyone could help that would be great. Okay, here's the story from my friend: His great grandfather, Obadiah Barnes, was orphaned when the family was struck by a flu epidemic. He was taken in by a neighbor's family - name of Davis - and carried the Davis name thereafter. The family was apparently settled in eastern Ohio, along the river. They are now in Bridgport and Lansing. They were farmers and coal miners. Obadiah married and they had a little girl. He then went into the Union Army and became a captain in the Civil War. When he returned home, he found that his wife and daughter had died. He married again and I don't know the extent of the children from that marriage. There were at least Ira and Cloyd (both sons). One of Ira's sons was Robert Dale Davis, who was the father of our friend, Robert Raleigh Davis. Since Obadiah was in the Civil War, I presume he was born approximately 1840.(?) I have not looked up any of this information - only got it word-of-mouth from our friend. Janice

Dear All - I am researching the BARNES family of West Sussex, living mainly in the Petworth-Northchapel-Storrington area and adjoining parishes. Do have one member John, who with his wife, Charlotte, nee WOOLFORD, emigrated to Canada, to the Toronto area, in 1836. He apparently had a brother already living in Pennsylvania, although I have been unable to identify this brother as no-one appears to be missing! Also spent two years researching an entirely unelated Barnes family from Boughton under Bleane and Waltham in Kent. (This family were predominantly saddlers). If anyone has a connection to either family I would be delighted to hear from them). Regards Joan Barnes
In my post of 16 Jan, I made a typo ". . . . Barnes and about 1800 in the U. S. Barnes." Barns was the surname used until about 1800 when the spelling for most of our ancestors changed to Barnes. I believe I may have confused many - Sorry - It was a typo. Happy hunting. Lucy
We have a friend whose father was originally a Barnes in Ohio. In the flu epidemic of 1918, his parents died and he was raised by a neighbor who changed his name to Davis. If anyone is interested, I can ask for more information. Janice
Twana, Although I haven't the documentation for you, I would not be at all surprised to find that you are related to my husband. His GGgrandmother was Arathusa BARNES (1812/1813 KY - 1889 Macon Co, MO). Her siblings spent some of their lives in Randolph, Macon, and Chariton Counties, MO. Have to answer this statement. The name of BARNES is said by some genealogists to have been spelled "Bainie" and may have taken its meaning from the Norse word bjorne, meaning warrior. Some researchers claim that the name is derived from the Scottish word baien, meaning a child. Variations frequently found in the spelling of the name are: Barn, Barne, Barron, Bern, Berne, Bairn, Bairne, Berns, Bernes, Bairns, Bairnes, Barneis, Barnes and about 1800 in the U. S. Barnes.
