    1. [BARNES] House Bill 4330 - concerning birth records
    2. Hey everybody, This post was on the West Virginia list. I thought I would pass it along to anyone who may be interested. What a terrible road block this is. Mary Subj: [WVLINCOL] House Bill 4330 - concerning birth records Date: 03/20/2004 12:23:23 AM Eastern Standard Time From: sweetladyj@adelphia.net (Jane) Reply-to: sweetladyj@adelphia.net To: WVLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com Hi, I received this email from a list that I am on in WV. I thought everyone would want to know what is happening in one of our states that could cause genealogists problems. Last Saturday, March 13, in the WV Legislature,House Bill 4330 passed. It is now awaiting signature from Governor Wise to make it law. If you are a family genealogist/historian whose research involves West Virginia, then this bill affects your work whether you live in West Virginia or another state. If Governor Wise signs HB 4330, all birth records will be closed to public access for 100 years and all death records closed for 50 years. We are all concerned about privacy issues but HB 4330 in its current format is too restrictive. Please email Governor Wise and address your concerns. Don't delay. The governor's email address is Governor@WVGOV.org If you would like to examine HB 4330 then cut and paste the URL below. Remember to sign your email with your full name and address. http://www.legis.state.wv.us/legishp.html Jane ==== WVLINCOL Mailing List ==== Visit this site for information about this list. http://fly.hiwaay.net/~jjadkins/lcwv/mail.html

    1. [BARNES] John R. Barnes and Sarah Jane Owens
    2. Frances Wiley
    3. I have a Barnes Family Book and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to know ?? The family book states that John Barnes married Sarah J. Owens the 14 day of Dec. 1869 by a Rev. Henry Jones and Witnessed by John Williams and Elizabeth Price, Sarah's sister. Sarah Jane Owens was born the 11 day of March 1851 and died Nov. 23, 1925 This John Reese Barnes that married Sarah Jane Owens was my grandmother's brother. Sarah Elizabeth Barnes born 1861. This I was told by my cousin Tommie McELroy that was born in the early 1900's and I saw a picture of Uncle Reese Barnes and Tom was in the picture with Uncle Reese Barnes. The picture hung on Tom's wall in his home until his death. In the picture Uncle Reese was very old and Tom was just a small child. I have a marriage license of the original record of marriage of John Reese Barnes and Sarah Jane Owens and it states... J. R. Barnes of Pope County age 22 years to Sarah Owens of Pope County age 20 years, and then and there, by the authority vested in me by law, and now pronounce them to be husband and wife. Given under my hand the date above N. M. Flowers J. P. Files for, and duly Record in my office Dec. 27th 1854 ____ ___ Howell Clerk according to the dates on the marriage license that would put then much older then the Barnes Book says. The dates for this is so different from the book could anyone explain and the dates for the children born of this marriage is also dated later in life for them in this Barnes Book... could anyone explain or maybe they were a lot younger and storied about their age on the marriage License ??? 3. I was wondering if anyone out there was doing any research on the Elijah and Bachary(?) Barnes family that was living in Newton County, Arkansas. Elijah states he was born in Kentucky and his wife states NC. There are 8 children listed and 6 of them were born in Kentucky. I am especially interested if anyone has information on the son Samuel who was 16. Thanks, Carole Campbell

    1. [BARNES] William H Barnes & family Tennessee
    2. Hello, I'm searching for the parents (as well other info) of William H Barnes born circa 1840-1844 in either AL or TN. I believe I have first found him in the 1870 Perry County, TN census as William Burns. He shows with wife Lela/Cela (b ca 1845-1847) and daughter Virginia b ca 1864. I find him as William H Barnes in 1880 Hardin County, TN. Wife is listed as Selour. Children are Virginia b 1864 MS, Ada and Ida b ca 1876 AL and Jones H Barnes b 1879 TN. His wife is actually Selia/Celia/Cecilia (Tignor). Known children were Virgina A, Ida, Ada, Jones "Homer" and Pue Cannon Barnes. I believe William died somewhere between 1885 and 1896. Most likely in Hardin or McNairy County Tn. Daughter Ida married Winfield Springer in 1894 McNairy County, TN. Winfield dies and next I find Ida in Dyer County marrying D.A. Jones in 1898. They have Reeder Lovada Jones. D.A. passes away and marries neighbor DeWitt Allen Barrett in 1902 Dyer Co TN. Dee and Ida move back and forth from Dyer to Gibson and back again. They have John Quincy Adams "Butler" Barrett, Celia/Cecilia Lucille Barrett, Nathaniel Monroe Barrett, Sarah Alice Barrett, Lola Vandora Barrett & a daughter who died young Janie/Jeanie Barrett. Daughter Ada marries William Robert Sanders. They have Lula, Brown Lee and Henry. William passes away and Ada marries Robert Lee Harris. They have James Edna Harris. The family resided in Gibson County, TN Son Jones "Homer" Barnes marries Allice Sanders in Dyer Co TN. They have Jermie. Allice dies and Homer marries Virgie (?) and has Evie Barnes. Virgie was married first to a Reeves and has two daughters from that marriage. Homer and family resided in Gibson Co, Tn. Son Pue Cannon Barnes marries Mollie S (?). They have Viola, William, Mamie, Lynn and Olvia or Annie. The family resided in Gibson Co Tn. In 1910 Selia is living with son Pue and says she had 9 children, 5 of which are still alive. The 5th one may be Virginia. I know nothing else of Virginia after the 1880 census. Lastly, this family has Native american ancestors in either the Barnes line or inSelia's line. Any help is greatly appreciated! Tara R Barrett

    2. Roxanna A. Jolly
    3. My gggrandmother is Fannie Barnes. She married George Reese Hammett in Troup Co, GA. They were married by George's uncle, Rev Brockman Hammett. Fannie's sister, Mary, married William A Timmons in the same county. They both moved down into East Texas. I am trying to figure out who the parents of Fannie (Frances E) and Mary L are. I have been told that it was a Mary Frances Mccune and Walter TC Barnes (yet again, another marriage in Troup Co, GA). Walter died in VA. Mary was found living with Fannie and George in TX, not having remarried, so it seems like a good fit. Is there anyone out there who can confirm this information? If anyone is related in ANY way, I would be so happy to hear from you!

    1. [BARNES] Re: Scotch Irish BARNES or any other Scotch Irish Descendants
    2. Andi: There are two excellent books on the Scotch Irish immigration to America. The 1st book I would recommend is "The Scotch Irish: A Social History" by James Leyburn. It is an excellent overview of why so many Scotish farmers were induced to migrate to what is now Northern Ireland, their stay there [generally about 100 years] and their immigration to America starting ca 1717 and continuing to the American Revolution. Their primary areas of settlement [western PA, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and down into NC and SC]-- although they can be found anywhere in that time period. The 2nd book I would recommend is "Albions Seed: Four British Folkways in America" by David Hackett Fischer. This book reviews many aspects of colonial British settlers in America -- including a huge section on the Scotch Irish. Lots of maps and tables and footnotes. Either of these books should be available in a good library or through inter library loan. I prefer the 1st book, but have made good use of the 2nd. Carol Vass, a descendant of two different BARNS/BARNES families: [1] Mindwell Barnes, b. [prob. CT & prob. ca 1775/80] m. Titus Adams [poss married in Simsbury, Hartford Co, CT or Rutland Co, VT]. This couple moved to NY ca 1810 and then on to Ohio and then Coles Co, IL by 1830. I have been unable to connect Mindwell to any of the New England BARNES families -- so far -- although I can quite definitively document her husband back to an early Massachusetts ADAMS -- George Adams of Watertown, MA [not connected to either Pres. Adams] [2] Lt. John Barns [b. ca 1740/45 in Frederick Co, VA] m. Hannah Cartmell ca 1769 in Frederick. This couple moved to Harrison Co, KY in 1797. I am almost positive, but can't prove that 'this' John Barns was the son of 'a' Charles Barns [wife Elizabeth McDowell]. I am almost positive that Charles Barns was most likely of Scotch Irish descent, if not actually born in Northern Ireland ca 1690-ish. Charles Barns died in Frederick Co, VA in 1803, but can be documented there as early as 1738.
