    3. I'm researching the Barnes family below and hoping to find out where in AR they lived and connect with other researchers of this family. This family moved so much, they are hard to track down. George b. 1863 IL and Mary (Bays) b. 1869 IL BARNES Children: Clerk b. 1898 Schuyler Co.,IL Roger b. 1901 Schuyler Co., IL John b. 1904 Prowers Co., CO Helen b. 1908 CA Louise b. abt 1912 AR George b. 1863 died in 1914 CO (according to an LDS site search) - I have not been able to confirm this though and believe he probably died in AR. Mary (Bays) Barnes was remarried in the 1920 census to Harris Lawrence b. abt 1842 NJ. In 1920 they lived in Los Angeles, CA. In the 1930 census Mary was a widow. Later in life Mary married a Mr. Usher that I have no info on. 3. Folks, recently several list members have posted links and other messages to some of the lists I manage that do not specifically relate to the specific topic of the lists. They have been related to genealogy however. In the future, please do not post such messages or links to the list without first consulting me as list manager, and waiting for my approval. With increased danger and trickiness of current virus/Trojan writers, we need to be extra careful about what we share. Thanks! 1. [BARNES] Barnes family of Wisconsin
    2. Gwen Wall
    3. Hi, Barnes researchers: I have a BARNES story to tell. I am a descendant of Matthew PEPPER and America (surname unknown) who homesteaded Washington Territory in 1870. I have never been able to make any connections to any ancestors for either of them. Recently I was visiting a fellow family history researcher in Milton-Freeater, OR, which is 3 miles below the Oregon-Washington border in southeastern Washington State. He told me that in 1993, a couple visited Milton-Freewater from Wisconsin, looking for this PEPPER family. This is the only PEPPER family who ever settled the Pacific Northwest as far as I know, so there is a definite connection. The man did not remember this couples' name, but stated they told him that this PEPPER family was related to a BARNES family in Wisconsin. I do know that Margaret and Jane PEPPER, two sisters, were both born in Wisconsin in the 1850s. The two known sons, Matthew and James, were supposedly both born in Illinois or Indiana. Do any of you researchers know about this connection between the BARNES of Wisconsin and the PEPPERS who settled at the stateline area of Washington, near Walla Walla? 1. [BARNES] My grandfather Robert Barnes
    2. Linda K
    3. I found in the 1880 census a Robert Barnes age 2. The copy of the census page is difficult to read, and all I can make out is: Barnes, Daniel, W,M,54,born Virginia Mary C, W, F,35,wife,born Kentucky Susan W,F,19,dau,born Kentucky James W,M,17,son,born Illinois Thomas W,M,13,son,born Illinois Henry W,M,11,son,born Illinois Harvey W,M,9,son,born Illinois Marshall W,M,7,son,born Illinois Louisa W,F,4,dau,born Illinois Robert W,M,2,son,born Illinois Does anyone know anything about this family? My parents died several years ago, and no one knew anything of my grandfather having any siblings. This might be because he moved to Arkansas and spent the rest of his life there. The only thing I know is that when he married my grandmother in 1902, he was 24, and my father wrote in his Bible that my grandfather was born in Benton, Illinois. The census was from Belleview, Calhoun Co., Illinois. Thank you....

    3. Actually, someone posted a very good article a while back about the origins of the Barnes name. Maybe this would be a good time to re-post it. I believe the name is Irish, English and French. Original versions of the name included Bairn, Behrn, Burns any many many more. 1. [BARNES] Barnes English, Irish or French?
    2. This information was sent to me by an aunt years ago..... Titled "The Family of Barnes." I just copied the first part the rest follows the lines of Thomas, Charles and William Barnes who came to the US from England.... Just thought since we are discussing the country of origin for Barnes would pass this along... Regards, Patricia Barnes Zielinski C.W. Bardsley and others writing books on surnames state that the name Barnes was a local place-name in Suffolk and Surrey, or that it came from “Bernard,” or that it came from the farmstead structure. However, in tracing the family lineage, and checking with Doomsday book, it has been found that the family lived in the town of Bernieres, near Falaise, in France, that the family name was thus spelled, until they came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and then the name was Anglicized to Barnes. For their service with William the men were granted estates in Middlesex, Essex, Norfolk, and Cambridgeshire. Hugo de Bernieres, according to Doomsday book, held lands in Euresdon, Cambridgeshire, in the 11th century. In the “ visitation,” or census, in the XVI century, the heralds confirmed the Arms, then in the possession of Henry Barnes, the “eldest sonne,” whose brother Richard became Lord Bishop Durham. In this country, in “Marriages before 1699” we find the name Barnes in Mass., Conn., New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Maryland. In the Revolution there were soldiers from Mass., Conn., Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Virginia, Maryland, and the Carolinas.
