Looking for any information on the Thomas BARNES who enlisted in Capt. Edward Jessup's Corps of Loyal American Rangers 1776-77. Birth date is 1761 or earlier for him to have become a soldier in 1776. Location may be southern Vermont, or upper Hudson Valley of NY (based on where he enlisted and fought). After the war I believe he removed to Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada, where presumably he died after 1835. He was probably the father of Gilbert BARNES and David BARNES; possibly related to Benjamin BARNES and John BARNES. (Benjamin and John could be his brothers or other sons). Marriage may have taken place in Canada some time before 1790 (David Barnes was born in 1790). I know this is a lot of speculation, but it's the best I've got so far. Any and all help will be appreciated! Judy Penski

BARNES, Aaron I'm going over some old messages - Brenda asked questions regarding Aaron Barnes who married Levitha Cobb. We do have this family in our computer. We have Aaron, born 20 Nov 1803 in Estill County, Kentucky married to (2) Levitha W. Clubb. We have Aaron listed as part of Brinsley Barnes' lineage. . . . . Aaron Barnes (1803-1878) James Barnes (1768-1859) John "Deaf" Barnes (1736-1822) Brinsley Barnes (abt 1705-1796) Perhaps someone else has already answered this old inquiry. Fred and Edna Barnes, Fairfield, CA
BARNES, Julius and Anson - I'm just now going over some messages printed out some time back. Tami asked if anyone had a Julius or Anson Barnes. We do have Julius Barnes, born 15 Jan 1815 in CT and Anson Barnes born 1789 in CT. They are part of the Thomas Barnes of Hartford, CT lineage. What information did you desire? Thank you. Is anyone researching Barnes in Meade, Larue and Nelson Counties in Kentucky? My James Barnes and children moved to Nelson County probably in the 1780's. He brought children Samuel, Elijah, Jemima, and Archibald. The mother of these children is unknown. James had other older children, but they did not come to Kentucky. Bedford Co., PA history states that James was from England and first settled in Baltimore, Maryland. About 1777 he went with others to a settlement in southern Bedford Co., PA. Sometime after, he married a widow, Hannah Hynes. Hannah died in Nelson Co., KY in 1804. James' travels are unknown, but he died in Nelson Co., KY in 1795. Samuel had many children and several settled around Bardstown, in Nelson County. Elijah had fewer children that survived to adulthood. His son Gideon remained in Nelson Co. and had as many as 15 children. Elijah's son Armstead moved to Meade Co., KY and married Elizabeth Dowell in 1830 and had 12 children. James B. Barnes moved to Larue Co., as did William and Archibald. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! Hello group - she says very sheepishly - boy did I goof - the Stewart NY census findings I sent you were from 1800, and not 1880. Ruth - thank you so much for bringing that to my attention - Dot
Hello all - I have finished transcribing several counties of the 1880 NY census. I know it doesn't give much family information, but it does tell you what County and town they were in. My Grandfather was Albert Ernest Barnes, born 20 April 1912 in Norfolk, England, he was known as 'Tony'. His parents were James Barnes (B. cir 1879) and Laura Griffin, who married in 1902 - James and Laura's other children were Robert Griffin (B.1901), James (B.1903), Eleanor, Frederick, William, Richard, Arthur, Florence and Alice. We believe that James was born in 1879 in Hemblington, Norfolk, and have found him aged 2 on the 1881 census - which lists his parents as William (B. 1845, Tunstead, Norfolk) and Hannah (B. 1846, Woodbastwick, Norfolk), with the following siblings:- Elizabeth (B.1867), William (B.1969), Henry (B. 1870), Thomas (B.1972), George (B.1874), Robert (B.1975), Rosa (B.1877), Sarah (B.1878). The 1891 census also listed John (B.1884), Alice (B.1884) and Benjamin (B.1886). Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? - I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they can help. Hi Lorry, I have a copy of what seems to be the most comprehensive (and heavy...) paperback book in the world called "Chicago & Cook County, A Guide to Research" by Loretto Dennis Szucs. From page 485 to 490 it talks about death records. To extract a few details: p. 485 "Death records are available in Cook County from 1871...the records are often found by locating the date in indexes... If an exact death date is known, a copy of a death certificate is the best starting point... "Chicago Deaths 1871-1933" is an index which makes it possible to find death dates for a large percentage of Chicagoans who died within that time period... [I recognize I'm not being too helpful at this point as your Homer was alive at this time; however, it might be useful info. for you later, with other people, I don't know.] "Death Certificates" "A typical death certificate from Chicago or Cook County (both are issued from the Cook County Bureau of Vital Statistics) from the 1870s will provide: the full name, age, sex, marital status, occupation, date and hour of death, [p. 486] cause, and the duration of any disease which caused the death. Other information requested on the standard forms were: the street address and the ward; nationality and place of birth; and length of residence in the state. The place and date of burial and the name and address of the undertaker are other valuable items noted... Not until 1910 were the names and birthplaces of the deceased's parents included on death certificates. "Microfilmed Death Records "The Genealogical Society of Utah has microfilmed the following death records: "Cook County (Illinois). County Clerk. "Chicago death certificates," 1878-1915" (655 microfilm reels).... "Cook County (Illinois). County Clerk. "Death record indexes, 1871-1916" (on 70 microfiches)... "Cook County (Illinois). County Coroner. "Coroner's death records, 1879-1904.... [p. 488] "Chicago (Illinois). Board of Health. "Chicago Deaths 1871-1933" (13 microfilm reels).... [p. 489] "When checking the microfilmed death records, check also the Social Security Death Benefit Records index. Published on CD-ROM by Automated Archives, Inc., [and also available for free at the FHL website] this index contains approximately 50 million names of individuals to whom a lump sum payment was made by the Social Security Administration. Although the records are from 1937-1993, many of the people listed were born in the late 1800s or early 1900s... [p. 490] "Mortality Schedules "Mortality schedules (see section 7) list deaths for the twelve months prior to the federal census. "Alternative Sources of Vital Records "Chicago Board of Health "The Chicago Board of Health, located in the lower level of the Daley Center, maintains vital statistics for Chicago only... "Cook County Suburban Cities and Towns "...outside of Chicago also maintain their respective sets of vital statistics, however, they are for relatively recent years. "State of Illinois "State of Illinois Office of Vital Records Illinois Department of Public Health Springfield, IL 62761 "Chicago Genealogical Society "The records of over 10,000 individuals who were residents of Chicago were contributed by more than 1,250 of their descendants, and compiled and indexed by the Chicago Genealogical Society. The society published the collection in 1985 as the "Chicago Ancestor File: 1974-84."... The 381-page volume can be purchased from: [p. 492] "The Chicago Genealogical Society P.O. Box 1160 Chicago, IL 60690-1160 "Data collected since the publication of "Chicago Ancestor File 1974-1984" is being printed in the Chicago Genealogical Society quarterly publication, "The Chicago Genealogist." "The society has also published vital statistics which appeared in Chicago newspapers. These are in seven volumes covering the years 1833 to 1848. The information in each of the books (sold separately) includes marriage and death information. This makes it possible to recreate the records destroyed by the 1871 Chicago Fire. All volumes are indexed. Volume 1 (1833-39); Volume 2 (1840-42); Volume 3 (1843-44); Volume 4 (1845); Volume 5 (1846); Volume 6 (1847); Volume 7 (1848). Hi all, I have just joined this group and am wondering if anyone else is researching WILLIAM BARNES, born in 1834 in Wiltshire, England. I don't know what year he emmigrated to Sydney, Australia, but he had his second son Thomas Barnes in 1860, here in Tumut, a district of Young, NSW. I am trying to locate more on William. Thank you, Jenni Kay South Australia
I am researching the McGregor & Barnes family of Camp County Texas. My gr-gr-grandparents, James A. & Lavinia/Laura (Davis) McGregor came to Morris County Texas about 1869 from Georgia. They had 4 children one of which was............. Mary Anna McGregor B:02/1860 in Georgia. She married Charles Edgar Barnes in 1879 in Morris Co. Texas & are found living in Camp Co in the 1880 Census. I believe Charles mother was a Talbot. According to later census Mary Anna & Charles had 4 children....... Clara B: 09/1891, Warren Sidney B:03/29/1895, Lewel B: 03/1897, Charlie B:02/28/1903. Charlie married 'Effie ?' & in the 1930 census had Vera M. B; abt 1926 & Doris I. B; abt 1929. Are there any connections out there? I have McGregor information to share...... Laura
Dear List, I have just joined this list so thought I should post a bit of an introduction. I am researching me family tree, part of which involves the Barnes family. I am particularly interested in finding information out about a James Barnes who married Mary Sherwood sometime before 1865. All I currently know is that James was born in Fareham Hampshire and was a chair maker. Also that the Barnes and Sherwood families are from a Romani/Travelling background. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Gary Chaffey --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger - Communicate instantly..."Ping" your friends today!
