BARNES, Betty Ruth (From the Daily Republic newspaper, Fairfield, CA) Obituary of Betty Ruth Barnes April 14, 1932 May 3, 2004 Mrs. Betty Ruth Barnes was born in Tulsa, Okla., April 14, 1932. She died in Redding Hospital May 3, 2004. Betty came out to California while still a toddler with her mother and two sisters. They lived in Oakland for a time, then moved to Vallejo where she received a well-rounded education. Betty took dancing with Scatley Western at about 3. She then danced on a radio show and was paid for it. Her father, Otto, taught her to skate at a very young age; a pastime both enjoyed immensely. She met and married George Barnes and started a family, giving birth to nine children five girls and four boys and adopting her granddaughter, Sarah. Christmas was her favorite time of year. The decorations and the looks on the kids¹ faces when the tree was packed with presents made her happy. Thanksgivi ng was also a favorite of Betty¹s. She planned early and her Thanksgiving feasts were a noisy, festive time that lasted all day. Betty¹s overseas experience began in 1958 while her husband, George, served in the military. At 25 she already had five children and was working on the sixth. Her favorite place was Greece where many of the children were old enough to absorb and appreciate the culture. While there she added two more children to the family. No matter where the Army sent the family, they always returned home to California. After her husband, George, retired, they moved to Tahoe where Betty learned how to sail and snow ski while she was in her mid-40s. In the 1990s she entered college to finish her education but was a class short of her degree because of her husband¹s failing health. She also worked as an aide at Richfield Elementary School for a while. She belonged to the Pocahontas lodge and the Women¹s Relief Corp. Everything Betty experienced in her life was her biggest enjoyment and her children and grandchildren are very proud of her. Betty leaves behind a large family: Jeralyn Salinas, Jorjanne Reed and Kathleen Liening of Fairfield; Timothy Barnes of West Virginia, and Michelle Ballard and Jayne Vinson of Corning; Sarah Barnes of Arkansas; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Kudsk of Vancouver, Wash., and Margaret Adorno of Corning; stepbrother, Vernon Rockwell, of Corning, and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, George Barnes, and three sons, Patrick, Shaun and Christopher Barnes, preceded Betty in death. There will be a memorial for Betty at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, 506 Colusa St., Corning. Pastor Fissori is presiding. Published in the Daily Republic on 5/5/2004.

Listers, as you well know from the list guidelines, posts like this are NOT to be discussed on the list, so any comments or question must come to me privately. As most of you probably know already, there are many, many viruses being written recently, and new ones are written almost daily. PLEASE, be sure to watch for them and be suspicious of any post that comes in your e-mail that carries a suspicious subject line, or unannounced attachment. Also, please be aware the most of these "varmints" do not really come form the addresses you see, but are forged from the address book of someone's infected computer...which is the same source from which your address was found as the sendee. if you are like me, you are receiving warning notes from Anti-virus programs telling you that your computer is sending these messages, when it really isn't. I know my computer is clean, because I have scanned at least daily, and check for updates more than once a day for these very reasons. We all need to do this. The main reason I am posting this morning, is because some times them message was say it is form RootsWeb list address, and it isn't really. That address is in someone's address book, and was used by the infected computer. You cannot receive a truly infected post from a real RootsWeb post. Infected posts come through HTML posts, and RootsWeb doesn't allow anything but plain text messages. Also most viruses are targeted toward Windows Systems and other Bill Gates software, and RootsWeb doesn't use Windows as their OS. So don't panic! Just delete and go on. Jennifer Braswell list manager PS ...For those who are new to using a-mail and computers, I can furnish you a list of links to help you understand more about viruses, Trojans, hoaxes, etc., if you request this privately. Also watch the taglines(list mode) and administrivia (digest mode) for these as well. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). I am trying to find my father's line. It may be impossible because he was orphaned at birth and his father never came back. His mother died when he was born. Her name was Rena Grey or Gray. I am not certain of his father's name, but it may be Theodore or John and his grandfather may be John. His name is Earl Barnes. I have found him in the 1920 census, and it lists him as a hired hand for Thomas Yann, in Louisville Ky.. I don't know if they were his adopted parents or not, but I remember him talking about Mrs. Yann's wonderful cooking all the time. Now, that he is gone, I realize how many questions I should have asked him and written them down. He was born in Eustis Florida, but there is no birth certicate for him, or any record of his mother's death. He was orphaned in Louisville, Ky. Thank You, Alta Godwin
Alta, Did you check the Social Security Death Index on rootsweb.com? Do you know his birth and death date? With that you should be able to find him on the death index as long as he lived past the 1930s he should have been required to get one. When you order a copy of the SS5 for about $27 he should have listed his father and mother with her maiden name. With the names we might be able to find them in the 1880 census. Let me know what his birth and death date are if you have them and I'll see what I can find. I can't find Earl or the Yanns in KY in 1920 census. Where exactly are they living and on what page? Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. Is anyone researching Henry Barnes of Vermont? Local information says he had a son Benjamin and both were probably in Vermont prior to 1720, York, Maine 1720 to 1726 and Merriconeag (now Harpswell, Maine) in 1735. Apparently one of them married Francis Carmen a widow. Henry may possibly have had a second son Nathaniel. Nathaniel my G G G G Grandfather and a "brick wall" in our family research.
