    1. Re: Victor Barnes, c 1865, Cass City, MI
    2. Anyone with knowledge of this family, please contact me direct. Thanks! Barnes family lived on farm outside Cass City, Michigan, time-frame about 1865. Victor was fifth child. Mother died when he was born, or shortly thereafter. Father Henry Thomas/Thomas Henry had four additional small boys to care for plus the farm so he gave Baby Victor to the neighbors to care for temporarily. Subsequently they moved to Wisconsin and the Barnes family lost track of their little brother. Years later, grown John Barnes (brother of Victor) was traveling by train to Wisconsin to buy some lumber, started talking to the man next to him on the train, and told him about this sad event. Wonder of wonders, the man knew the family in Wisconsin that had taken Victor so many years before. He gave John their address (or took him to their home, I'm not sure which) and the family was reunited with their brother at last. --As told to me by 91-year-old niece of Victor, 6/2004. Dawn

    1. Re: [BARNES] BARNES 1860 IT
    2. Thank you for the 1860 Census report of some of the people reported in what is found at the end of the 1860 Arjansas Census and called the counties West of Arkansas. Their is also a Book by this Title. Why do I know this is that I have been searching my lines for a very very long time and some of these Barnes are my Barnes. The William S. Barnes was my great great grandfather b. ca.1823 SC . HIs wife is Lenora J. (last name unknown-believed to be full blood Cherokee) She was born ca. 1833 SC . They are found in Kansas Territory where Ella Jane Barnes was born in Jun 1856 . They migrated to Micco, Creek Nation, Indian Territory now Oklahoma and are shown in this census record. Micco was on a river which was blocked and formed a large lake. Micco was flooded and to my knowledge no records exist for us to search. Charles M.Barnes was born in Micc 1856. I can find no further record on William S. Barnes. Family information reports that he was killed by indians(no proof) but he was a merchantat Micco. Another consideration is that the timing was right for him to be in the Civil War--who knows? At any rate on Dec.28,1871 Ella Jane Barnes and Hinton Curtis Atkinson were married in Hunt co., Texas. The other Three Barnes I know nothing about. I would like to help anyone who has any interest in this line and hope I have not been too verbose. Jack M. Calkins

    2. I am new to this list and was wondering if anyone else is working on the same line. I have Jane Barnes born about 1797 in NC and died after 1880 in Clay county, NC. She was married to David Ledford Sr. who was born between 1817 and 1818 in Randolph county, NC and died 1860-66 in NC. I have a lot of information on the Ledford side but haven't been able to find anything as of yet on the Barnes side. Can anyone help?? Doris Smith

    2. This is what I have: From The Westward Migration of One Line of the Descendants of The Thomas Barnes of Hartford and Farmington, Connecticut by Clair Elmer Barnes, published 1966 by the author, 4525 Keever Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90807 in the Burton Collection, Detroit Public Library ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- On Sept. 2, 1635 at the Port of London, England, 101 passengers, including Thomas Barnes age 20, boarded a ship. (In 1634 the Archbishop Laud of London began a reign of terror, and Capt. Johnson took 21,200 persons the year following). If this was Thomas Barnes of Hartford and Farmington, he was b. c. 1615 probably in Essex Co., England.

Thank you. Bruce Freeman _glenn@mwci.net_ (mailto:glenn@mwci.net) Hello Bruce: The sources we have for Thomas Barnes of Hartford, CT are listed below. Thomas Barnes was listed as being 20 years of age when he sailed on the ship William and John in 1635. We have the dates of Thomas Barnes of New Haven, CT as 26 Aug 1623 - 10 June 1691. The Barnes Family Year Book, Vol I, 1907 discusses a few of the early Barnes families. Hope this information will be of assistance. A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records, Vol. I, 1635-1700, pp 401 and 402. Thomas is referred to as the Thomas Barnes of Hartford, Hartford County, CT. He was one of the first 40 settlers in Hartford, CT, 1639 having six acres alloted to him. His name appears on the Founders Monument at Hartford, CT. It is believed that he was born in Essex County, England. Thomas sailed from London, England to St. Kitts or St. Christopher in 1635 on the ship, "William and John". Feb 1639, four parcels of land were described "belonging to Thomas Barnes and to his heirs forever." This site was to become part of the business center of the City of Hartford, and contained about as much land as an ordinary city block, it faces southeast, at the corner of High Street and Albany Avenue. His first wife, Mary, was convicted and executed of Witchcraft in January-1662/1663. Thomas served in the Pequot War, 1637, granted 50 acres for his services, 1671. He removed to Farmington and served as a Sergeant in the Trainband of Farmington, CT in 1651. He joined the Farmington Church about 30 Jan 1652/3 and was the 30th member. Subsequently, two of his sons were baptized there. Thomas was probably the first Barnes family in America. His will is dated 9 June, 1688. Around 1661, he gave the City of Farmington a rear portion of his land for a burying ground. In 1668, he gave another portion on the street for the same purpose, and in 1695, his son Joseph sold a third portion to the town. The earliest burials there are unmarked. The oldest stone which can be deciphered are 1685. Thomas residence in Farmington was 123 Main Street. In 1946, Mrs. Hurlburt wrote an article concerning the Barnes' Home for the Colonial Dames Society as the "Barnes-Mix-Lawrence House".

    3. Dear Barnes cousins, My ggg grandparents are Joel Taylor Wilkinson who m. Hannah Barnes, date and place unknown, but probably around 1810 in Hamilton Co. Ohio. Hannah Barnes was b. 1798 in Kentucky, per census records. I just received some information on early Hamilton Co., Colerain Township, which details the Barnes family who came from Kentucky about 1808 to settle in Colerain Twp. The family is Abraham Barnes and Catherine Isgrig. The will of Abraham Barnes lists his children left in the care of his wife, but my ancestor would have been out of the house when that happened. Does anyone have all the children of Abraham Barnes and Catherine Isgrig? I am hoping they had a daughter Hannah b. 1798 in Ky, before they left for Ohio. Many Thanks, Beth Zaring

    3. Hello, Glad to be aboard! My great-great-great grandfather is James Barnes. He married a Betsey ? According to the 1850 census, he was in Clarkson, Monroe County, New York. He moved to Michigan in the mid 1855 and is in Antwerp Twshp, in Van Buren County, Michigan with her, listed in the 1860 census and then him in the 1870 in Geneva Twpship, Van Buren County, Michigan. I don't know her maiden name, or the year of their wedding. He would have been born in 1800 and her 1797 according the census. I assume around 1820 based on their ages and a son born in 1822. Any help on them would be greatly appriciated. They had 2 children that I know of. James born, in 1822 and S/cynthia born in 1835. She is with them in the 1850 census. James married an Anna ? , who was born in the 1840's and they had 4 boys, one Franklin who may have been born in New York, around 1853. I do not have his birth record. There is a James born the right year in Clarkson but the wife is Mary Ann, I don't know if this is a possible first wife? James was older when he married Anna so this might be the case. There is another young James and a Daniel listed with them in 1850, i Dont know anything about them. I'm really looking for more record of them in and around clarkson. James 1822 married a Sarah See/Sei in michigan in 1863, her family is listed as clarkson as well. I dont have any birth or marriage info on james and betsey or james and anna. please help!! thanks. greg __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
