I have posted the genetic distance reports for our Barlows who had the DNA test done. This is much easier to understand than the scientific explanation, and I see why the more markers you test, the closer the relationships can be defined. Now I can't wait to get our 37 marker update back!. This sounds interesting, just received this email from our DNA Project. Family Tree DNA is proud to share with our Group Administrators the Press Release that we will be distributing tomorrow, on occasion of the launching of FTDNATiP - the first TMRCA predictor based on marker specific mutation rates. This new tool will be available to you before the end of the day at your GAP, by going to the "Member" page/Genetic Distance "Report" for the individual that you want to use as the basis of comparison. There will be an FAQ link in the FTDNATiP Report page. DNA Estimates Ancestry Timeline World's most powerful DNA genealogical tool launched HOUSTON, November 22 - Family Tree DNA, (www.FamilyTreeDNA.com), the world leader in Genetic Genealogy, launched today FTDNATiP, the first program that allows two individuals who have tested their DNA and obtained the values for specific Y-chromosome markers, to compare them and estimate the probability, expressed in percentage values, that they shared a common ancestor within a certain number of years. This program, coupled with results of a mutation rate study conducted by the University of Arizona, and presented by Family Tree DNA at the 1st International Conference on Genetic Genealogy on Oct. 30, 2004, has resulted in an extremely powerful new tool for genealogists. FTDNATiP incorporates specific mutation rates that have been proven to differ across the Y-chromosome markers, greatly increasing the power and precision of estimates of Time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA) between two individuals. The University of Arizona mutation rate study generated values significantly higher than those typically reported in the literature. These results arose from collaboration between Family Tree DNA, the University of Arizona Genomics Analysis Techonolgy Core, which is one of the world leading laboratories for Y-chromosome research, and one of the world's leading statistical geneticists, Dr. Bruce Walsh. Since its inception, in April of 2000, Family Tree DNA has been associated with the Genomics Analysis Techonolgy Core, led by Dr. Michael Hammer, one of the world's foremost authorities in the field of Genetics. Having other renowned scientists in its advisory board, Family Tree DNA is the world leader and only organization in the field of Genetic Genealogy that has been constantly developing the science that enables many genealogists around the world advance their families' research, and to fill the gap between genealogy and anthropology. I may have mentioned, I have been working for a few weeks now on and off, John Barlow of Dallas Co Alabama. Haven't succeeded in getting his ancestry yet, but have gotten a lot of descendants. I am in a quandary over this guy! John lives in Dallas Co Alabama, with his wife Elizabeth. They have 4 children, Sarah, Mary, George and Frances. Sarah and Mary both married Newberry's, and George married Mary A. Frances married a CROCKER. What is really strange is that in 1830, John is living next door to Lucy Barlow Crocker and her husband Drury CROCKER. I can not find a relationship between them, but there is bound to be one. Lucy is the daughter of Jesse Barlow and Lucy Wills, as your IOW folks know, and in Jesse's will, he doesn't mention a son John, which would have been my first choice. I've worked on Isle of Wight a lot, and haven't found a John anywhere in there that is not accounted for. To make things even stranger...I found 2 marriage records in Dallas Co Al, one showing Drury Crocker married Frances Barlow, and the second showing he married Lucy Barlow. I had always assumed that he married Lucy's sister, Frances/Fanny first, and perhaps she died, and he then married Lucy. John Barlow's daughter was alive in 1852 when he wrote his will, while Drury is deceased. Were there two Drury Crockers???? This is maddening. Can anyone give me any clues. Also, Elizabeth Barlow has a will, Dallas Co Alabama, dated 1857 I believe, I need a copy of that, but since it is not my family, I am not willing to pay the $25 fee to the archives to retrieve it. Anybody have a copy on file of that will. I doubt it will help find John's ancestors, but might help on Frances Barlow Crocker, as I cannot locate her on any census record after she married. Elaine Jeter, and a new contributor, Fred Wade have sent a lot of updates on the above mentioned family. Anyone care to make donations for the Joseph Burleson Barlow (Georgia, Alabama, and Texas, family to test for DNA. Got a volunteer, but he can't afford the test. Bunches of Barlows has just upgraded their test to the 37 marker. Encourage anyone else? I'm surely not a salesperson, and I don't make anything off of these tests, but am interested strictly for genealogical values and to find our families. To those who responded: DNA Test Cost: 12 marker $99 25 marker $169 37 marker $229 Upgrade cost 12 - 25 $99 25-37 $59 12- 37 $ 149.00 It takes about 5-8 weeks to test or upgrade, and cost more doing it in steps, but I would suggest any begin with a minimum of 25 step, the 12 marker test always leaves you wanting for more. We really do need to get on the ball, our group only has 13 volunteers thus far. Most of the projects are so much farther ahead than we are, perhaps we are only a small group. I do have a cousin who is going to try to put together one of those fancy charts, perhaps that is why our group is not doing so well, because we have a 'dummy' administrator who cannot explain it well to them. :-) I wish I could understand it better. Or if any one of you think you could take care of this, I'd be happy to let them take it over and try to get the ball rolling. I for sure am not a salesperson. I know we have folks out there who don't have a clue what family they come from, and we have others who know, but we need comparison test for those of us who don't. Like, Edmund of Malden, George of Sandwich, Jonathan and Plain Rogers, etc.. and I do also know many of you are willing, but have no male Barlow's to test. Get on the ball, and hunt em' down. Computers can do wonders these days. My family has feelers out everywhere for a descendant of Branson Barlow to test. Remember the test is just a swab inside the mouth mailed in..only takes a second or two, and your name doesn't have to be public if you don't want it to be, we can give you a number instead. All is private, the only person who actually sees anything that you don't want them to is myself, and I promise I ain't talking cept' to you guys on this list. Susan, How much does it cost for the 37 marker test? How do we do it. I am thinking about paying for either my uncle or one of my brothers to have it done. thanks, Carolyn Barlow Glaze
First, I don't know if I have told you that one of our volunteers, Bert Barlow has upgraded his DNA test to the 37 marker, he is from the William and Edith Mathoda Barlow family of Georgia, and now my relative, Wendell Barlow is upgrading so that we can make a comparison. I can't locate John F. Barlow to ask about his upgrading to a 37 marker test, but if any of you Fairfield Ct Barlows would care to pay the , I believe $58 fee, it can be done on that as well. Roseanne, you might consider upgrading your Bunches of Barlows test also. All of these families have matching genetic markers. And I believe, Alan Barlow of Ireland / England. A new test does not have to be done, they can use the existing ones. It takes, I believe 5-8 weeks for results once it is ordered and paid for. I was just directed by one of my kinfolk to an easier to understand explanation of how the DNA works, The Blair DNA Project, http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/dna101.html although I still could not begin to put together a chart such as theirs. If there is anyone from this project that understands, and could make a chart for our volunteers, I am sure they, as well as I would be most appreciative. Probably could be made in Word, or some other software that could be viewed on the website. Allan Barlow has been trying for years to find his family, and though I didn't get any further back than he did, I spent yesterday and all last night, into today locating more family. I used census records, marriage records, and cemetery records to try to piece together his family, and a little bit of a guessing game..but notes are included where that was included. I believe that I have located 2 of Joseph's brothers, Franklin and James. Would love for all of you to take a look and then see if you might have anything in your files that might help us go back with this family. I believe we are looking for a James, possibly James E., of either Georgia or Alabama. Some of this family was also said to have spent time in Louisiana,, but the particular families I traced were all in Shelby Co Texas. http://www.barlowgenealogy.com/Families/JosephBurlesonBarlow-SarahAnnHin ton.html Susan LOOKING FOR BARLOWS BARLOW GENEALOGY http://www.barlowgenealogy.com "A website for everyone researching the surname Barlow, any spelling or variation, anywhere, anytime... includes....Barlow, Barlowe, Barlo, Barloe, Barler, Parler, Parlur, Barlage, and others yet to be discovered"
Roberta Jones has contributed a file of births in Indiana, 1884-1920, all counties, all of these have mothers with maiden names of Barlow, which will tell you who the father is..great way to find out who that elusive female married. Thanks Roberta for your newest contribution. Roberta has made many contributions to the website, especially for Kentucky and Indiana, in search of her brick wall for the families of Chaffin Barlow. I believe they come from the Joseph Barlow family in Washington and Smyth Co Virginia, but she nor I can find any proof, and other researchers in that area have proven no help as yet. If any of you do research on Barlow in that area, perhaps you can give her a hand. She has been searching for at least the five years I have been doing the website. Does anyone know where they fit into the George Barlow and Mary Lancaster family. I can find nothing on their lineage except that two of their children, Antoinette and Georgianna married George's descendants. They are bound to be cousins. I know better than to try to work 25 hours a day on genealogy. That obit in no way belongs to the John Barlow whom I'm researching. But does anyone know who it belongs to; he still is driving me crazy. He HAS to be from the Isle of Wight families. This contributed by Betty Barlow Prescott: The Alabama Baptist 20 November 1862 Many a heart has been made sad, and many of the noble sons of the South have passed from time to eternity since the commencement of the present war; but few purer or better men have died than the subject of this brief notice, Mr. John BARLOW, son of Deacon Thomas Barlow, of Lowndes county, Ala. He was born December 3rd, 1827, and died at Charlottsville, Virginia, July 17th, 1862. In early youth he embraced religion and became a member of the Baptist Church, and ever adorned the profession he had made - prompt to all the duties of the Church; quiet and unobtrusive in his manners, he was esteemed most by those who knew him best. In 1859 he moved to Texas, and at the call of his country he entered the army, 1st Texas Regiment, Hoods Brigade, and while performing the duties of a soldier he fell a victim to disease, away from father, brother and sisters, with no Kindred to cheer in his last moments. But those whom he best loved on earth, though they lament his loss, are cheered by the confident belief that the Redeemer was near, to sustain him in his last moments and conduct him safely through the dark vally and shadow of death. May a kind Providence watch over the entire family thus bereaved that ultimately it may be a family saved in Heaven, no wanderer lost. I have an obituary of John Barlow, Dallas Co Alabama, 1862, says he is the son of Deacon Thomas Barlow of Lowndes Co Alabama. We have a Thomas in Lowndes Co in the Isle of Wight families, but his son John is traced, by John R. Barlow. Thomas Sr. has a son, Thomas Jr., but Jr. wasn't born til c1808, and John was born in 1782 in Virginia. He was married to Elizabeth and had at least two daughter, Elizabeth and Sarah, both married Newberry's, and Sarah later married Richard Williams, and one son, George W. Barlow. I have spent the past couple of weeks searching census etc..and have added lots of information and families to the Isle of Wight pages, combining pages of Virginia Harrison, John R. Barlow, Edson Barlow, and Clinton Barlow, to put together a huge genealogy for the Thomas Barlow, Elizabeth Roscoe and Mary families. If any of you have additions, please send them to me. Bunches of Barlow's???? I have George W. Barlow, lives in Dallas Co Alabama, son of John Barlow and Elizabeth. All of his census records say he was born in La. His parents: John was born November 19, 1782 in Virginia - died August 03, 1852 Dallas Co Alabama ...........moved to Alabama 1829.......... He married ELIZABETH....born NC January 14, 1784 - died Dallas Co Alabama September 18, 1857.... Looking back at 1810 and 1820, I can only find James and Thomas Barlow, Bunches of Barlow's..but neither show a son John. What yall think? Is this a part of Bunches of Barlow's? How do I prove it? One other thing I recall, a Thomas Barlow, whom I believe to be mine, while IOW thinks he's theirs. St. Tammany Parish Louisiana marriage records show: Barlow, Thomas and Franklin, Francis married on 21 April 1812 A Thomas Barlow was in the War of 1812: Thomas Barlow, Private 12th and 13th Consolidated Regiment, Louisiana Militia If I'm thinking right, Frances Franklin Barlow married 2nd, Rueben Haws in 1815. So I assume Thomas died, perhaps in the war. My Thomas would have arrived in Louisiana c1811-12..as he traveled through Wilkinson Co Georgia with his mother, brothers and sisters, leaving them in Mississippi, while he traveled on to LA. That is my theory. I cannot locate Reuben Haws in a census index for 1820. Got any ideas?
