    1. Quaker Barlow's?
    2. Indiana Robinson
    3. I was poking around in my Barlow's with with a sharp stick recently and ran across something I didn't know or had forgotten (I do that a lot). Mine are from the "Bunches" bunch from Thomas1 then Thomas2 and Miss Carlton. My ggg-grandfather was their son Jesse who married Nancy Gosnell. I show Jesse born about 1779 at Lynchburg VA. It seems that 3 siblings of Barlow's married 3 siblings of Gosnell's. The Gosnell's were Nancy, William and Benjamin. The Barlow's were Jesse, Elizabeth and the Jane. The Gosnell's came from England to Maryland between 1660 and 1698 as far as I know. From there they migrated to VA.(apparently Pittsylvania County). My information says that Nancy Gosnell and Jesse Barlow were married in Pittsylvania County VA. I recently ran across information that indicated that the Gosnell's were Quakers... I could understand one quaker marrying a non quaker even though the quakers were generally hated in VA but for three to marry into a non Quaker family would be almost impossible according to much of what I have read. Could these Barlow's have been Quakers? Maybe those Barlow's were Quakers and everybody else on the planet but me knew it. :-) Maybe they were just more open to Quakers than most Virginians that I have read about in that era. I would mention here as I have before that Milton Barlow (who sat on a different branch of the same tree) said in an interview with the authors of the well known Kentucky history (I can't recall their names right now) that his family had been French Huguenots that came here to escape persecution. Has anyone else found this line of Barlow's bumping into Quakers? -- "farmer", Esquire At Hewick Midwest Wealth beyond belief, just no money... Paternal Robinson's here by way of Norway (Clan Gunn), Scottish Highlands, Cleasby Yorkshire England, Virginia, Kentucky then Indiana. In America 100 years before the revolution. 1. Barlow of Robeson Co NC
    2. Susan BARLOW Holmes
    3. I am currently working on putting together a better genealogy of the Barlows found in Robeson Co NC. I received DNA results for that family, and they are a complete new major group of Barlows. From the research and notes I have gathered, I feel sure this family came here in the mid 1700's as a part of the Ulster migration from the lowlands of Scotland. Most of those families came as indentured servants, and arrived in Philadelphia PA, and as their debts were paid, they began migrating to NC. (I have a record, the 'Indenture of BRANSON BARLOW Robeson County January Term 1800 Book 1 page 161' to Arthur Dubois and Samuel Meeker of PA, which I believe shows his debt paid, thus, he probably arrived 7-10 years earlier, and is just being released from that debt. He didn't hang around NC, he soon migrated to Alabama. He was probably a relative of William Barlow who received land in Bladen Co (later Robeson) NC in 1765. Thus far, from what I have gathered, I feel confident that those Barlows found in Conecuh and Monroe Co Alabama are of Scot-Irish ancestry, as well as Branson family in Clark Co Alabama. In looking thru lineages here on the Barlow website, I have come to believe that William and Dicey (Conecuh and Monroe Co AL), and Elias and Jane Barlow (Conecuh Co Alabama) may be sons of John Barlow, who in turn is the son of the original William Barlow in Robeson Co NC) Those genealogies that have shown my Barlows of Mississippi are a part of this family, have now been proven completely wrong, there seems to be no relationship, based on the 25 marker DNA test. Any comments?. 3. Jerry Dagenhart has sent a few more images, but more important, he has shared with us stories handed down from his family, giving life to our kinfolk better than dates and such. He is writing a book he will call "Carolina Folklore", these stories he feels are true, but not having proof, other than word of mouth through the years, will be considered as folklore. Most are of Susie Pennell Barlow's second husband, William F. Pennell, aka Mean Bill Pinion, who was also her second husband after Larkin Carlton Barlow's death in the Civil War. They are at: http://www.barlowgenealogy.com/BOB/BraxtonBarlow-Carlton.html One story may a bit more controversial has been posted on the John Jr. page, concerns his marriages to Nancy Rash and Betsy Kendall. I hope that nobody will be offended by this story, it is just that, but Jerry would like some proof of this, thus it is posted. Any negative comments should be directed to Jerry, not to the list, please. jlynndagenhart@netzero.net I love the stories, it gives life to our kinfolk...and we all have black sheep in the family..I for one, love the wild west characters, always wishing I could find a famous outlaw to be a part of my family...not today, but in the past! 3. Hi Kem, you and I have corresponded before about our Barlows. So far, we haven't connected. :( Other than what I have in my original posting, I know nothing more about the Barlows. I think I did point out to you in a private email how Samuel Holden and Mary Ann Barlow had a daughter-in-law by the name of Cora Biggs....which I thought was interesting considering your Barlow married a Biggs. Nicole > Nicole, I would appreciate it if you told me more about your Barlow's. I, too, am looking for information regarding the Barlows in New Hanover County, NC. My Barlow's go back to James B. Barlow and Sarah Biggs Barlow. I found James Barlow in New Hanover County, NC ca 1820. Please write me back.

Aaron was a brother of Joel Barlow, the poet and statesman. Thomas was educated and adopted by his uncle Joel Barlow and accompanied him to France as his private secretary. He was with him on the fatal journey to Wilna, Poland. Joel, as our Minister to France, was chasing after Napoleon who was invading Russia in the winter of 1812. Joel caught pneumonia, died on December 24, 1812, at Zarnowiec, Poland, and was buried there. After the death of his uncle, Thomas returned to the United States and established himself in the practice of law at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was recorded in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in the 1820 through 1850 censuses. He died on October 1, 1859, at Washington, Pennsylvania. While in France Thomas Paine Barlow met and married Frances Anica Preble on July 28, 1817, at Draviel, near Versailles. She was born in 1797 in France and was a daughter of Henry and Frances (Wright) Preble, and granddaughter of Brigadier General Jedejiah Preble of Falmouth (Portland), Maine. Draviel was the beautiful French country estate of Daniel Parker, an American gentleman and Henry Preble's intimate friend. She died on December 24, 1876, at Washington, Pennsylvania. Their children were: i. Frances Emma Barlow was born on June 29, 1818, at Kalorama, Joel Barlow's home near Washington, D.C. She married Hugh Wilson in April 1837 at Washington, Pennsylvania, and they had children. She died on February 12, 1845, at Washington, Pennsylvania. ii. Anica Barlow was born on May 29, 1821, at Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. She married John D. Chambers in April 1855 at Washington, Pennsylvania. She was living in April 1911. iii. Harriet Barlow was born on November 19, 1824, at Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. She died in March 1827 at Versailles, France. iv. Francis Joel Barlow was born on February 2, 1828, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He did not marry. He died on June 17, 1854, at Ballerat, Australia. Francis Joel Barlow was a graduate of Washington College, Pennsylvania. He studied medicine with Dr. Le Moyne and received his degree from the Philadelphia Medical School. He practiced medicine for a time at West Manchester, York County, Pennsylvania, and had intended to practice in Australia but his early death there prevented. v. Frederick Stephen Barlow was born on August 4, 1830, at Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. He did not marry. He died on August 5, 1864, at Mobile, Alabama. Frederick Stephen Barlow was a graduate of Washington College, Pennsylvania, and he entered the U.S. Navy as a third assistant engineer on June 22, 1860. He served first on the Anacosta, a small screw-tender based at the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard; next on board the U.S.S. Sumpter on the west coast of Africa until her return to the United States; and then on the steamer Kanawha under Farragut. He was promoted second assistant engineer on July 30, 1862, and ordered to the steam gun boat Owasco the following year as senior engineer. When it was decided to attempt the capture of Mobile, Alabama, and its defences, an officer of experience being required as senior engineer, he volunteered to go on board the monitor Tecumseh, the leading vessel of the fleet in the "Bay Fight" on August 5, 1864. His services, after being twice declined, were accepted on account of the illness of the senior engineer of the Tecumseh, and he went down with that vessel, at his post, when she was sunk by a torpedo during the fight and all on board were lost, excepting the pilots and eight or ten men.
