Dear Joan, It would be helpful if you could get a copy of the actual 1880 census listing for your Lewis Barker, as that would show where HIS parents were born. It's possible that your Lewis traces back to the Wake Co., NC Barker families. There were two Lewis Barkers there in 1800--one was my husband's ancestor, Lewis Barker Sr. [son of Joel Barker] who left Wake Co. about 1805 and went to Tennessee. The other Lewis Barker was the son of William Barker, who died in Wake Co. in 1799, leaving in his will, 275 acres of land to his son, Lewis. In 1805 Lewis Barker Jr. was appointed guardian to Sally, Bartlett and Killingsworth Barker, orphans of William Barker. The relationship between the two Lewis Barkers has not been determined, but they were likely distant cousins, both descending from the Barker family of Surry Co., VA.
