I have the subject JOHN BARKER as a son of JOHN and DOROTHY (SHEPARD) BARKER. My records show that he married ELIZABETH HARWOOD, November 25, 1708, in Concord. ELIZABETH was born July 08, 1694, in Concord, a daughter of WILLIAM and ESTHER (PERRY) HARWOOD. I also show that JOHN and ELIZABETH had at least four children between 1709 and 1716: DOROTHY born October 24, 1709, LYDIA born June 18, 1711, JOHN born April 13, 1714 and SARAH born December 14, 1716. I have an additional three children; JOSEPH born October 27, 1721, ABIGAIL born August 06, 1724, and FRANCIS born July 24, 1726, but do not believe they belong with this family.. A problem arises because I have this same ELIZABETH HARWOOD married to JOHN FRENCH. I have JOHN born May 6, 1691, in Dunstable, MA, a son of SAMUEL and SARAH (CUMMINGS) FRENCH. I have them marrying about 1718 and having their first child JOHN March 1, 1718/19 and more children born through 1733. In addition, I have JOHN BARKER's death date as after February 11, 1754, indicating that date may be the date of his will. The only "source" I have is from Watson H. Harwood's "A Genealogical History of the Concord HARWOODs", page 11, where he says: "ELIZABETH, born July 8, 1694. We learn from the Concord, Mass., records that she married JOHN BARKER, Nov. 25, 1708. He must have died before 1739, and she married again, as in her father's will she is called ELIZABETH FRENCH." I would like to put forth a different theory. My view is the JOHN BARKER did not die, but ELIZABETH and he separated, probably through divorce, sometime around 1717/18. ELIZABETH married JOHN FRENCH and JOHN BARKER married an unknown woman and had the three children from 1721-1726. A little scandal here?
