Hi Pat, or should I say cousin!! Your William Nicholas Barker had a brother named James. James is my 2GGrandfather. I have a copy of the 1860 census with the daughter Amanda. I have nothing about a marriage for her but I am really sure that you have made the right connection. If your Amanda had named a son Cicero that would have been the clincher, LOL. Seems many of the Barker's liked that name. As you saw William Nicholas and Alita Humbles (maiden name) liked it as well. The James and Nancy Barker you mentioned are Amanda's brother and sister-in-law. Where do you live? I live in Austin Texas and will be ordering microfilm to search for marriage records in Walker Co. As I make trips to the genealogy library hear at the state Archives I will do what ever I can to help you prove that you have the right connection. Here are some things you will want to know. 1. Britton Barker married Celia Watts on January 12, 1808 in Wilkinson, Amite co. Mississipi. They ended living in Ouachita parish Louisiana. 2. William Nicholas Barker was their oldest child. He married Alitia Humble on December 6, 1832 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish Louisiana. They moved to Walker co. just before 1840.(I found them in the 1840 census) 3. Near William and Alitia Barker you will find a Elizabeth Parker living in Walker Co. This is William's sister who married Jesse Parker(talk about confusing huh LOL). The two familys moved to Texas together. 4. Britton Barker and Celia Watts had 5 children. William Nicholas Barker, Sarah Barker Webb, Elizabeth Barker Parker, Louisa Barker Nettles, and my gggrandfather Jame Barker. All the children were born in Ouachita parish Louisiana. 5. Britton Barker died in 1819, when the oldest William was 9 and the youngest, James, was 1. Celia died in 1822. The children went to live with a Celia's sister and brother in law. There are some really interesting court documents about these kids "tutoring" arrangements with this brother in law, and later sueing for back pay for the use of a slave. 6. There is speculation that Britton Barker's father was a British river boat captain on the Mississipi river in the 1780's and was a Tory. I have seen nothing of this yet except just what others have told me. 7. There is a website on our Barkers. Do a search for Britton Barker and Celia Watts and it will come up. This is the lady who was kind enough to share her information with me. She also is decedent of William and Alitia. If you can't find it let me know. I would be glad to send you a GEDCOM file if you use a computer genealogy program or I can make copies of what I have and mail them to you. I would appreciate it if you could do the same on your branch. I am trying to document all decedents of Britton and Celia. I will document that you gave me the information. Oh by the way. Amanda's brother Joseph had a son names Eugene Campbell Barker. He was a Texas Historian and professor at University of Texas. They have named a Library after him. I am so glad to meet a fellow Barker researcher and looking forward to discussing this with you more!! Martha W. Barker Austin Texas
