    1. [BARKER] Barkers

    3. Maybe all us Barkers should submit our DNA samples and find out if any of the Barkers are related. My brick wall keeps getting higher. How can there be so many Barkers and it seems very few are related.? Gary Barker

    3. Well perhaps that would solve my brick wall... (DNA) and perhaps there are more relationships than we may know about among these New York Barkers. My BARKER line begins with a John G. Barker but no one knows anything about him. I must assume that he and Lucetta Lusk were never married since she shows up on the 1850 census with her three sons with her name as Lucetta LUSK and the children as Charles R. b. 1846 and Maurice L. b. 1848. Another son Roger died in infancy, he was born in 1847. Later I find all the records for my great grandfather spell his name Morris. The bits and pieces I have found were in my ggrandfather's Civil War Pension Files. Since Morris lied about his age when he enlisted and was 18 on three years of records, he had to prove who he was... but there is where the paper trail ends. He only briefly mentions his father as John G. Barker died in 1849 or 1850 in Newport, Niagara County, N. Y. I have been unable to substantiate this information since I wonder if he just bowed out of this family's life. Lucetta Lusk was born in Ireland and she married a man by the name of Harry Rose in 1851 but she died in 1855. I was quite surprised to find such a thick file on the pension files records. The year before I found some Civil War information in the way of attendance tickets and meal tickets... but nothing more and then someone suggested I try the pension files. There are files for both Union and Confederate soldiers at the National Archives in Washington D.C. It was very rewarding to rummage through my great grandfather's hand written letters, almost like touching him in person. Morris and Charles spent time living with a family named DUNWELL in Ohio, after Lucetta died. I haven't been able to determine who the Dunwell's were or if they were somehow related. Morris related that he and Charles lived in the barn and that when the war broke out they both enlisted in Company D of the 103rd Ohio Infantry. He was often sick during the years he spent in service, showing up in various states as being sick and absent. It was later determined he had lied about his age when he enlisted. Maurice/Morris L. Barker married Ella Van Norman while he was working in Wisconsin. He worked for the railroad after the war. They traveled through several states before settling in Illinois. They had three sons - Ray Coleman Barker b. 1889 (my grandfather), Royal Maurice (known also as Roy) born 1890 and William S. born 1893. I never met my grandfather, due to my parents divorce. Anyone have the rest of the pieces of the puzzle? Sure'd be nice to connect to kinfolk.
