Hello Diane, I know this won't be the answer you're looking for, but I'm tossing it in for good measure. My Barker's came to america in 1895. They moved around the areas in NJ, NY, and Connecticutt. None of my Barker's have a middle name that I know of, with one exception...John Emris Barker. Linda Barker
Well perhaps that would solve my brick wall... (DNA) and perhaps there are more relationships than we may know about among these New York Barkers. My BARKER line begins with a John G. Barker but no one knows anything about him. I must assume that he and Lucetta Lusk were never married since she shows up on the 1850 census with her three sons with her name as Lucetta LUSK and the children as Charles R. b. 1846 and Maurice L. b. 1848. Another son Roger died in infancy, he was born in 1847. Later I find all the records for my great grandfather spell his name Morris. The bits and pieces I have found were in my ggrandfather's Civil War Pension Files. Since Morris lied about his age when he enlisted and was 18 on three years of records, he had to prove who he was... but there is where the paper trail ends. He only briefly mentions his father as John G. Barker died in 1849 or 1850 in Newport, Niagara County, N. Y. I have been unable to substantiate this information since I wonder if he just bowed out of this family's life. Lucetta Lusk was born in Ireland and she married a man by the name of Harry Rose in 1851 but she died in 1855. I was quite surprised to find such a thick file on the pension files records. The year before I found some Civil War information in the way of attendance tickets and meal tickets... but nothing more and then someone suggested I try the pension files. There are files for both Union and Confederate soldiers at the National Archives in Washington D.C. It was very rewarding to rummage through my great grandfather's hand written letters, almost like touching him in person. Morris and Charles spent time living with a family named DUNWELL in Ohio, after Lucetta died. I haven't been able to determine who the Dunwell's were or if they were somehow related. Morris related that he and Charles lived in the barn and that when the war broke out they both enlisted in Company D of the 103rd Ohio Infantry. He was often sick during the years he spent in service, showing up in various states as being sick and absent. It was later determined he had lied about his age when he enlisted. Maurice/Morris L. Barker married Ella Van Norman while he was working in Wisconsin. He worked for the railroad after the war. They traveled through several states before settling in Illinois. They had three sons - Ray Coleman Barker b. 1889 (my grandfather), Royal Maurice (known also as Roy) born 1890 and William S. born 1893. I never met my grandfather, due to my parents divorce. Anyone have the rest of the pieces of the puzzle? Sure'd be nice to connect to kinfolk. That was a nice story! Good for you. I have tried putting in all the names of the brothers and the brothers children but never found anything. The theme is just keep poking at it and pretty soon it will all fall in place. It give the rest of us hope. Coral Barker Allbee
Hi all, I had just about given up hope ever finding George A Barkers family when along came James E Barker his brother. I found him by putting in George's son Emerson's name in the LDS site. It seems he was named for James Emerson Barker his uncle. well that led me to all James's children and their families and now here's the crazy thing on both James and George's death certificates it says parents unknown. How dumb. Next I found their obits. George's said his father was Aaron. There is no Aaron that matches this family.so I thought to myself why should I believe his name was Aaron when nobody knew what name to give on his death certificate. So now here I am I know nothing about there parents. James and George were born in Dutchess county NY. One in 1823 the other in 1819. They both moved to CT. James stayed there through out his life . George traveled around but I found him in all census records living in Litchfield CT.except one when he and his second wife Lucy Mallory wer! e living in Bowling Green VA. It seems George traveled and preached for the Advent Christian Union. George was first married to Sarah Ann Beach they had the following children Albert,Sabra,Emerson,George William,Charles and Lucy.James was married to Harriet Ives.He also had a long list of children if anyone would like their names please ask. George died in Bristol CT in 1905. James in Kent CT in 1908. If any has heard of my Barkers let me know. I recently heard from a James F Barker in Alaska. He is descended from my James E but knew less than I did about the Barkers. He's all excited now and is taking a trip to Cornwall England this summer to hunt for our ancestors. It's great to meet new cousins. we had a barker reunion last year in CT. We had great fun. Planning another one for this summer. I hope you all find your Barkers and have great fun doing so. If I can ever be of help please let me know. Are we having fun yet Diane

I'm glad that I am not the only one having problems with the Barker Line--My husband could not even tell me his grandfathers correct name because he had passed away and the grandmother later remarried a Bettis--I find the names you are coming up with very intriguing though. Ron's grandfather turns out to be Franklin Lewis Barker and his son--my father in law was Ross Dee Barker. The Uncle James was never married and lived for some time before his death with my in-laws and they inherited the farm in Clio, Wayne County, Iowa. There was also a brother Joe of My father-in-law and a brother Charley as well as a sister Coral and a sister Coy. If any one is interested in this connection please let me know. Good luck with your searches. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeannie Travis" <askgranny@juno.com> To: <BARKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 10:00 AM Subject: Re: [BARKER] Joe Barker > > Well , this is Jeannie in gloomy , rainy Middle TN...up near the KY > border near Fort Campbell, KY ! I am looking for a JAMES T. BARKER born in Delaware 1810-1820ca moved with family to Henry County Missouri, before 1840.. Family moved to Collin-Fannin Co Tx. area around 1870. Susan Earnheart Terrell
I need help trying to put this family together. James Barker Sr. b. VT ca 1797 and wife Mary had children: James Jr.(1812, John G.(1824), William (1827), and Racheal (1838). Since there are gaps in birthdates, I assume there were other children. I believe James Sr. served in the war of 1812 so that would explain the first gap. He also may have served in other wars, like the Blackhawk War? Does this fit with any Barker family you have? They were from Stannard, Caledonia County, VT. Later Delaware Co, Iowa (1856) Nebraska and Colorado. Coral in California
Betty: Your posting brings to mind an incident I just finally had resolved regarding birth places. One of my ancestors was reported to have been born in Cookeville, Putman Co., TN in 1814. That sounds well and good, except there was no such place during that time period and Putman County wasn't formed until 1842, only to be declared "unconstitutional." It was finally established 11 February 1854 and was made up of sections of Jackson, Overton, Fentress, and White Counties. So where was this ancestor born? According to the Putnam County Library Director, "In 1814 the area that was to become Cookeville was in Jackson County. It wasn't named Cookeville until the reestablishment of Putnam County in 1854. White Plains was the name of the community that was the temporary county seat when Putnam was first established in 1842." I hope this helps someone when trying to determine exactly where their ancestor was born and there is conflicting information. I think these Barkers were dropped from a spaceship. My Hiram Barker, couldn't from census to Census remember where He was born. One Census says Indiana the next says KY. The next door neighbor, Allen Barker, was only listed in the 1850 Census and listed KY.(That was the one Hiram listed IN. I can't even prove they are related. Allen's Children were: Drucilla, Sarah, Wilson, Lura, Lewis and John. Hiram's children were John, Juliana, Allen, Drucilla. Sarah, William and Emeline. I suspect that Allen and Hiram were brothers; Allen was born 1809 and Hiram in 1824. As you say it is frustrating.
