    1. [BARKER] BARKER, Jesse /Pace Barker
    2. JOAnKERm
    3. "Our earliest know BARKER ancestor was JESSE BARKER who we find in EDGEFIELD DISTRICT, South Carolina as early as 1785. It is believed that he was born about 1755 either in North Carolina or in Virginia, and that he was probably a Grandson of our immigrant BARKER ancestor." "The first name of BARKER of which we found record in VIRGINIA was James of Shropshire, England. He came to Virginia in 1636. George Barker from the same place lived in James City, Virginia, and Jonathan Barker lived in Charles City County; William and JAMES BARKER from SUFFOLK, ENGLAND settled in HENRICO COUNTY, VIRGINIA the same year; and a George Barker settled in Charles River County. In 1637 Jeremiah Barker from Shropshire, England, settled in Accomac County; Sylvester Barker in Upper Norfolk County and Robert Barker in James County." Apparently the above information was from Thomas Pace Barker who lived in CALIFORNIA and died in 1971. Apparently Thomas Pace Barker had done extensive research on this Barker Family. I understand that he wrote a book. However, apparently all of his research and all of the books burned in a house fire in California. I understand that at the time of the fire he was an elderly gentleman and that he never reconstructed his research. Also, I HEARD THAT HE MAILED A COUPLE OF THE BOOKS BEFORE THE FIRE. If this is correct someone somewhere out there is sitting on a real treasure of information --- information that we are having trouble reconstructing. It has been reported that he served in the Revolutionary War from NC in 1777. It has also been reported that he was a member of "Marion's Men" better known as the "Swamp Fox" in the Revolutionary War. I have no documentation to support any of the above information. I guess you could say that it is just the word of mouth information -- information that we keep and hope someday to be able to prove or disprove. JESSE BARKER is in the 1790 census of Edgefield County SC.

    3. Hi Some months back some one mentioned that all Barker in the USA should have their DNA tested to see who is related to who. At the time I thought it was a joke but I now see this is not the case. Even though I am not an American Barker I am interested how the DNA testing works. How and who tests the DNA and who checks keeps the DNA database. 3. Hi, I paid half for a MALE Baker (no r) DNA test. It a "y" chromosome thing. The test is $99 and consists of a inside the mouth, cheek swab. The results can "group" various lines. That's about it. Here's the URL for the Baker DNA test site so you can see how they organized the results. http://www.gizwebs.com/brown-baker/baker_dna.htm Gale (always looking for the parents of William Barker b. 28 May 1794 Pendleton Dist. 3. I have inquired with several labs to bid on DNA tests to determine if myself and a probable forth cousin shared a common ancestor. Both of us are males and we believe that we are descendant from a common grandmother 3 generations back. I was told in each case that the only way that DNA can be used to determine the relationship is that the samples must come from two female donors that are descendants of a common female ancestor in a succession of female descendants. in other words a mother to daughter to grand daughter etc etc. No male DNA can be in the line of succession and that applies to both sides. Then, if you can find two qualified female donors one from each family that are daughters of daughters of daughters of the common female ancestor they can determine the relationship. Now, after finding all this out and locating two female donors I got some bids for the test. The cheapest of three bids was $8000.00 US. Sooo needless to say I dropped that idea. It is possible that the labs I contacted were wrong but it would seem to me that if three independent labs gave the same information then they are all most likely correct. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Clive Barker" <clivebarker@seychelles.sc> To: <BARKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 09, 2002 9:05 AM Subject: Re: [BARKER] Barker DNA > Hi > > Some months back some one mentioned that all Barker in the USA should have > their DNA tested to see who is related to who. 2. Besides that, I also get alot of "Truth or Consequences" to which my wife replies --- that she now knows the Consequence of my truth! We have tracked the Barkers and it appears there were two distinct sets of them in the Lexington area - one set from Virginia and the other from Pennsylvania. As of yet, we cannot determine if they were related or not. I have been told through family stories that one branch of my family went to Missouri, one set to Indiana and another into Georgia; however, the Missouri connection is the only one that I have been able to verify. As you can see, the family was overly fond of the names of John, William, Joseph and Henry, and used them over and over and over again. No wonder I am having difficulty in tracking them down. I have come across a Jesse Barker in Kentucky. He was out of the Lexington area and his grandfather's name was William Barker. There is also another Jesse Barker that resided in the Nelson County, Kentucky area. Do you have any ties to Kentucky at all with your Barker line? I suspect that possibly one of these Jesse's is related to my Henry & John. My Elusive Barkers: 1. HENRY1 BARKER was born Abt. 1787 in Virginia, and died 1823 in Mercer County, Kentucky. He married CATHERINE BACH December 28, 1807 in Lexington (Fayette County), Kentucky, daughter of HARMON BACH and MARGARET HUFFMAN. She was born October 1787 in Virginia, and died April 10, 1867 in Kentucky. Henry's father is suspected to be John Barker; however, this hasn't been proven. Children of HENRY BARKER and CATHERINE BACH are: 2. i. JOHN2 BARKER, b. February 18, 1809, Fayette County, Kentucky; d. March 27, 1887, Perryville (Boyle County), Kentucky. Married to LYDIA SILVERTOOTH 3. ii. WILLIAM S. BARKER, b. May 15, 1813, Fayette County, Kentucky; d. February 11, 1895, Washington County, Kentucky. I have traced my Bob's Barker line with proof back to the 1830 Decatur Co IN census. That was Joseph P. Sr. and he bought land there in 1822. Wife was Nancy? He died in 1835 and his son later married Elizabeth Wright. They moved from Decatur Co to Tipton Co between 1860 and 1870. Joseph Jr. was on the way to Missouri before 1880, and the family story was that he died somewhere in Illinois. His wife died in 1915. The youngest son was my husband's grandfather. The names in that generation were Melissa, Jesse Jacob, Ellen Elizabeth, William, and Richard. Their father Joseph had a brother named Jesse, and I'm almost sure his father had a brother named Jesse. In Decatur Co, in the 1850's and 60's there were also Barkers named David and Benjamin . While I suspect they came from Virginia, I have been unable to prove anything. As a last resort, I recently submitted DNA. Just learned there is no match to any on file. If any Barkers out there are contemplating submitting their DNA, and wants a comparison, mine is now on file. Bob Barker

    1. [BARKER] Marengo Iowa
    2. David Barker
    3. We have 571 people in our family tree going back to 1701 but are baffled by the recent discovery of 2 letters dated 1893 from RC Barker of Marengo Iowa addressed to his cousins in the UK. In his letter RC refers to his uncle also to George and Dick, and later to Will Barker all of whom it appears are fairly local to Marengo. My guess is he and probably the others in the family emigrated to the US from Sawdon in North Yorkshire UK around 1885. We didn't know anyone from that part of the family had gone to the US but it might explain the lack of gravestones in the local village churchyard! In his letters RC refers to his cousin Annie, and it was in the papers of my great aunt Annie that we found his letters. So we have one link. If anyone can give any further clues I would be most interested............ Best regards David Barker Villiers le Morhier France

    3. Glenda, This has been a twenty year search for me and I hope you get a lot of responses. As you know John ended up after the Rev. War in Washington county as he was in Henry county during the war. Several of his sons fought in the war including my key interest, Charles born 1763 who fought in the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain. The version of Edward as the father of John is simply one of several which exist; another has him as the son of anther Charles. I hope someone can document either version and not just refer to the source FAMILIES OF WASHINGTON COUNTY or the site of John Kelly Barker. The Barker web site has the version of Edward which is based on a document written in the 1890s which also includes statements like one that the family owned the property that became Richmond and that the family taught in a Presbyterian school in England. Please keep me posted if you would.
