I guess not--mine are Tenn./Va. folk, Some descendants went to Texas, but another branch I think. Thanks, Jane G.
Lynda and Martha, do you know who were the parents of your James and Nicholas Barker? jane G.
Hi Jane Britton Barker and Celia Watts are the parents of the Barker children we are discussing. Britton died in 1819 and Celia died in 1822, living 5 children between the ages of 11 and 3. Is there a connection!! Martha Austin Texas
Hi Lynda I already have your email from when we first talked a few months ago. Just send me your snail mail when you get a chance. I also emailed Pat Sommerfield but have heard nothing back from hear yet. I am glad you had some information on William Roddy for her. Knowing how many people we come in contact with in our research let me remind you of my connection. My GGGrandfather is James Barker, William Nicholas Barker's brother. Did I ever give you an outline or send you a GedCom of my branch? I'll include an update with the census records I send you. Right now I am focusing on finding James Barker in 1850. I think he had moved to Texas, then moved back to Louisiana. A daughter from his first marriage states she was born in Texas. It doesn't seem like he stayed for very long though. Still trying to find out who his first wife was as well. Will probably only find out by taking a trip to Louisiana!! Bye for now Martha Austin Texas
Hi Lynda Saw your email and realized we had not talked for awhile. Hope everything is going well for you. I spent the summer getting caught up on copying census records on all the syblings of my direct descendents. I have some on Elizabeth Barker Parker and William Nicholas Barker. If you are interested in copies of them send me your snail mail address of the list and will get them out this week. I had a hard time locating Sarah Barker Webb, and Louisa Barker Nettles. Do you have any clues where they might have lived? I've not been able to find any information aboout their deaths either. Need to get back to work on lesson plans for school this week. Hope to hear from you soon Martha
Martha, It was good to hear back so soon. Yes, I would like to receive copies of anything that would be helpful to me. I don't have much information on Sarah Barker Webb and Louisa Barker Nettles. There is a note beside Sarah's name that says "moved to Texas." I am a retired teacher so I understand about Sunday afternoons being spent working on lesson plans and all of those other things that go with it. I will send my email address so that you can contact me directly. Then I will send my address. Lynda Moore lmoore@yucca.net --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Pat, I do believe that you are on the right track. I am descended from William Nicholas Barker through his son John Barker. On a family group sheet prepared in 1982 by a family member, Amanda is listed as child number 13 born 1856 and had married William Roddy. I have quite a bit of information on William Nicholas Barker, including his service in the Texas-Mexican Revolution. I will be glad to share any information that I have. lmoore@yucca.net Lynda Moore --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hi Pat, or should I say cousin!! Your William Nicholas Barker had a brother named James. James is my 2GGrandfather. I have a copy of the 1860 census with the daughter Amanda. I have nothing about a marriage for her but I am really sure that you have made the right connection. If your Amanda had named a son Cicero that would have been the clincher, LOL. Seems many of the Barker's liked that name. As you saw William Nicholas and Alita Humbles (maiden name) liked it as well. The James and Nancy Barker you mentioned are Amanda's brother and sister-in-law. Where do you live? I live in Austin Texas and will be ordering microfilm to search for marriage records in Walker Co. As I make trips to the genealogy library hear at the state Archives I will do what ever I can to help you prove that you have the right connection. Here are some things you will want to know. 1. Britton Barker married Celia Watts on January 12, 1808 in Wilkinson, Amite co. Mississipi. They ended living in Ouachita parish Louisiana. 2. William Nicholas Barker was their oldest child. He married Alitia Humble on December 6, 1832 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish Louisiana. They moved to Walker co. just before 1840.(I found them in the 1840 census) 3. Near William and Alitia Barker you will find a Elizabeth Parker living in Walker Co. This is William's sister who married Jesse Parker(talk about confusing huh LOL). The two familys moved to Texas together. 4. Britton Barker and Celia Watts had 5 children. William Nicholas Barker, Sarah Barker Webb, Elizabeth Barker Parker, Louisa Barker Nettles, and my gggrandfather Jame Barker. All the children were born in Ouachita parish Louisiana. 5. Britton Barker died in 1819, when the oldest William was 9 and the youngest, James, was 1. Celia died in 1822. The children went to live with a Celia's sister and brother in law. There are some really interesting court documents about these kids "tutoring" arrangements with this brother in law, and later sueing for back pay for the use of a slave. 6. There is speculation that Britton Barker's father was a British river boat captain on the Mississipi river in the 1780's and was a Tory. I have seen nothing of this yet except just what others have told me. 7. There is a website on our Barkers. Do a search for Britton Barker and Celia Watts and it will come up. This is the lady who was kind enough to share her information with me. She also is decedent of William and Alitia. If you can't find it let me know. I would be glad to send you a GEDCOM file if you use a computer genealogy program or I can make copies of what I have and mail them to you. I would appreciate it if you could do the same on your branch. I am trying to document all decedents of Britton and Celia. I will document that you gave me the information. Oh by the way. Amanda's brother Joseph had a son names Eugene Campbell Barker. He was a Texas Historian and professor at University of Texas. They have named a Library after him. I am so glad to meet a fellow Barker researcher and looking forward to discussing this with you more!! Martha W. Barker Austin Texas
I think I may have finally found my Amanda Barker! I have been searching for Amanda Barker born Dec 25, 1856, married to William E. Roddey. They were my gg-grandparents. I had been searching in the Falls County area, since both their children are buried there. But I have found my Roddey family in the 1860 Huntsville, Walker Co, Tx Census. William was 10 then. In searching more, I found also in Huntsville, the William Barker family....wife Alitia, children Henry 21, Thomas 16, John 13, Jane 12, Joseph 10, Cicero 7, Charles 5, AMANDA 3, and Aletha 5 mos. Since my Roddey family is also in this area, I am very tempted to believe this 3 yr old Amanda is my gg-grandmother. Can anyone tell me if they know for sure whether this Amanda may NOT be mine? If they know she married someone other than William Roddey? In 1870 my Roddey (spelled RHODY) family is living near James and Nancy Barker and their children in Walker County. In 1880 my RODDEY family was living in Falls County, Texas. William was still living with his parents and brothers & sisters. Amanda was in Walker County (age 22) with her mother. William and my Amanda married after June 1880. Two children: Garrett G. RODDEY born Dec 1882, and Willie E. RODDEY born 1888. Amanda died in 1891, and William remarried and the family is living in Brazoria County in 1900. >From my mother's aunt, who was daughter of Willie, and granddaughter of Amanda, and has a bible passed down from Amanda to Willie: inside page shows "Amanda Roddey died Jan 28, 1891, age 34 yrs, 1 mo, 3 days". My great-aunt did not know her grandmother Amanda, but knew OF her. From what my great-aunt told me, Willie's mother died and the father remarried. Willie did not get along with her stepmother, so was sent to live with an aunt and uncle in Dodge, Walker County, TX. When Willie married James EAKIN, they were married in Dodge, Tx by her uncle J. W. Whitaker. Now, I don't know how he is uncle of Willie.....maybe her mother's sister's husband, or father's sister's husband, or what. But if she lived with family in Walker County, I am inclined to believe her mother was from there. So maybe this Amanda BARKER was daughter of William BARKER and Alitia Humble. If anyone can help prove or disprove this, please let me know. Thanks Pat --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes

My great-grandfather, John Robert Barker, is a puzzle. He was the son of Hiram Barker and Jane Estes Barker. I have found him in thf 1850 Census odf Fulton C0., Illinois as age 2 or 3; the 1860 census gives his age ar 12 and the 1870 Census says 22. My problem is that I have newspaper item about his 100th birthday in 1946. Another newspaper gives his age of death, in 1947 as 101. His parenrs were married in 1847. Does anyone have a recording of his Birth, such as a Bible entry? Betty Bridges Bower
Jane, How nice to hear from you again; I have fried several computers since we last communicated. You are correct that the Henry county, Va. Barkers were the same group who later ended up in Washington county. John married to Snead was there as well as his son Charles of my interest; Charles born 1763 was by tax records really a resident of Henry county when he fought in the 1780 Battle of Kings mountain with Campbell's troops; this is still a shock as I assumed all of Campbell's men were militia from Washington county. Charles, along with John, officially moved to Washington county when they had a land warrant after the war. There are however more in HENRY than John, Charles, Joel, Thomas, etc. and I have been trying to find out who the others were and where they came from as well. Henry is also on the NC line and it is possible some of the NC lines came from here as well. I am still trying to document with primary material the father of Charles as Edward or Charles as there are at least these two conflicting versions as to who is his father. I will send you copies of some material I have received, none really conclusive proof. At some time I would appreciate your wise counsel. Hi CAn you tell me if you have a Jesse Barker.. born 1755 in NC in your book ? Thanks Alice
No. It appears that most of my Barkers are from Henry County, Va. Sorry Shawn
I have taken great interest in the fact that your name is Coral because my husband had a Aunt named Coral from the Barker Line. His grandfather was Lewis Franklin Barker and his father was Ross Dee Barker of Clio, Iowa. Ross had a Sister Coral and Coy as well as brothers Charles and Joseph. I wonder if that could be of any connection with your family. Would enjoy hearing from you.
