I just sent to Barker at rootsweb list data on Barker/Miner line. Data was sent to me in Nov 1982 by Irene Pendell. I failed to add death dates of Irene Miner Pendell. She died 09 Sep 1989, Springfield, Lane Co., Oregon. Grant Pendell died 31 Dec 1998, Springfield, Lane Co., Oregon. Betty bower
My Benjamin Baker hailed from Scarborough. I have assumed that this was in Yorkshire UK, but I believe there is also a Scarborough in the US somewhere. He was born 1803, and must have emigrated to New Zealand some time before 1849. He was married in Onehunga, N.Z. in March 1849. Maureen (nee BAKER) in New Zealand. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ward + Marianne Grant <pamabear@intrstar.net> To: <BARKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 30, 2002 8:41 AM Subject: Re: [BARKER] Barkers of Chicago > From where did Benjamin Barker hail? William and Zillia Holleman Barker had several children in Wake County in the early 1800's. The names I have on record include: William C., Zachariah, Eliza Jane, Tabitha, Michael Ann Arabella, John W., Lemuel G., Quinton, Rebecca, and Thomas B. Barker. Doing some research at www.censusdiggins.com I found a list of Civil War participants from Wake County, including several Barkers. Among them are Lemuel G. Barker, Quinton Barker, John W. Barker, and T.B. Barker. I am presuming that these are four brothers from the same family, sons of William and Zillia. Two of the four Lemuel and Quinton actually enlisted on the same date. According to records at censusdiggins.com, Quinton died at Elmira Prison in NY, and Lemuel died in hospital in Richmond, VA. Further it is noted that both John W. and T.B were at Port Lookout Prison, MD. I am curious if anyone is researching any of these Barker sons, in Wake County, or in other regions. I am wondering if perhaps, rather than returning home to Wake County, they settled in an area nearer to where they were released from prison after the war. Persons who have hit a brick wall with John W. and/or Thomas B. Barker might find that they were in fact born in Wake County, not where they show up in records after the war. A similar situation exists for a Thomas T. Barker. He is not a son of William and Zillia, and I am not sure who he belongs to. His information at censusdiggins.com shows he was born in Wake County. However, he deserted from the army near Staunton, VA. I really wonder if he settled there, and had family, etc. Might there be anyone stuck on him as a brick wall? Just curious. I have not researched these Barker cousins, but would like to know what ever happened to them: if they settled elsewhere and went on to have families, etc. If you find any of this information helpful, please let me know. I'll share what little more I have to offer. Mike Barker Richmond, VA mbarker7@aol.com
Martha and Lynda, WOW......this is neat! Finally finding the right family! I am more convinced now that my Amanda IS the daughter of William and Alitia (however you spell it). From what my great-aunt had told me about her mother and grandmother, and researching at the Gen Library, I am convinced. Plus reading the postings from the past two days. I have been looking through the BARKER list archives and found a lot of what has been sent about this family. Plus I had already found Barkers on the census records for Texas, just wasn't convinced they were mine until now. The fact that Amanda, having died in 1891, had a daughter Willie that went to live with her aunt and uncle in Dodge, Walker Co, Tx, and that same uncle had married Willie and James EAKIN in 1906. His name was J. W. Whitaker. In the Walker County History book, it shows that Amanda's sister Mary Jane, after being widowed, had married J. W. Whittaker. This must be the aunt and uncle mentioned. Lynda, you indicated you had already known about Amanda marrying a William RODDEY. Where did you find that record? I have been searching (mainly using the RODDEY name, as I thought it would be easier than BARKER to research). The ONLY thing I had found was from the death record of Willie E. EAKIN, showing her parents to be William Edward RODDEY and Amanda BARKER.....nothing else. I don't even know where Amanda died or is buried.....the bible didn't indicate it. Would you happen to know?? So now I can connect the information from the census records on the Barker family! I will be glad to share what I have on Amanda and James Eakin family. (They were my great-great grandparents. There are also some pictures that I copied from the bible, which, from the writing on back, are possibly Amanda and William. There are unidentified tin-type pictures also, but my great-gunt didn't know who they were. She thought they may be from the BARKER line. Were there any Calvert's in this line? I think one of the names she had was Calvert. But it could have been from another line. Thank you for your help. I haven't had a chance to look at the websites yet, but am anxious to. And I can send information on the EAKIN line after I update it. Pat Hargus Sommerfield Pasadena, TX --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes
