Funny how they just disappear, isn't it! I had a John G. Barker b. 1824 in Vermont who was said to have gone to Missouri by 1862. His father was James Barker also of Vermont. I have never been able to find him and I have his whole family. John G. Barker b. 1824, Vermont Mary B.D. (wife) b. 1832, Canada Children: Gardner Barker b. 1845, NY Lucy Barker b. 1847, Canada James Barker b. 1849, Michigan Fistus Barker b. 1851, Michigan Mary Barker b. 1854, Iowa One of my great uncles named James went by Joshua at time. Never did figure that one out. He lived in Omaha all his life. Good luck, Coral
Looking for anyone with any of these Barker family members- Joshua born @ 1854, Isaac Newton @ 1857, Mary Elizabeth @ 1857, Jefferson E. @ 1861, Margaret Jane @ 1863, Elias @ 1866 and Hamilton F. @ 1869. I am related to a Joshua or Josiah Barker. The others are brothers and sisters of his. Can't find any of them after 1870 Census for Ozark Co Mo. Hoping someone might match up with this family. Josh moved on to Ar. I can't find the rest after 1870. Thanks, Claudia Barker Franklin
Bob, thank you, thank you, thank you!! I am sure that is him. I was not sure how they spelled the name and tried a Barka list but there was not one. This is so helpful because my father in law was so mysterious changing his name to Parker and never telling anyone his real age. Steffen Barker who married Katrine was a musician in the Chicago symphony. Thanks again. Also note that there are some errors in the book itself, which are corrected by the wills and other records. It was probably 10 years ago when I did this, so I don't remember what they were. Do you know why they went to Kentucky? My Barker (Hiram Barker) was born in Kentucky, in abt 1824. He was living next to Allen Barker in Fulton Co., Illinois. Because of their naming patterns, I am sure these two are related Allen Barker was born in KY, in abt 1807. I noticed in comparing the published abstracts of the Barker Wills, as contained in "Wills & Administrations of Surry Co., VA" by Eliza Timberlake Davis, that there are some significant differences in the abstracts of the John & Grace Barker wills, when compared to the wills which were copied into the Surry Co.Will Books. In case others might be interested, I'm giving the differences below. WILL OF JOHN BARKER, Surry Co. Will Book 6, p. 191, 9 Oct. 1713;19 May 1714. To GRANDson Robert Foster, 40 acres of land that his father Foster bought of Abraham Evans. ABSTRACT: To SON, Robert Foster, etc. WILL: To Son Josiah Barker, 400 acres of land from the second branch to Richard Parker's line. ABSTRACT. . . .to Richard Barker's line. WILL OF GRACE BARKER, Surry Co. Will Book 7, p. 599. 30 June, 1724; 18 Aug. 1725 Leg. Son John Barker, three ells of good dowlis ABSTRACT Son John not mentioned. WILL: To GRANDson, Richard Barker ABSTRACT: To SON, Richard Barker The [apparent] error of naming Richard Barker as a son, instead of a grandson of John & Grace Barker, was picked up and continued in the book, "The Barkers of Virginia" Marilyn Owen
The names I have are Joshua, John, Mary, William, and Henry Z. The source is probably The Barkers of Virginia. My husband is from the line of John Barker Jr., son of Capt. John Barker, and one of the other sons was Joel. I just noted down the names which came up when I was researching John Jr's line. Jerry, please make some corrections in your post. Also, it has occurred to me that the obituary saying he was born in Moore County, NC, could be wrong. Also, between TN and MS, could he have been in GA? The obit said he went to TN as a young man but he did not show up in Copiah County until he was 30 years old.
