    1. ARKANSAS BARGERS
    2. Good Morning, Cousins & Friends: This Rootsweb mailing list has been in operation for just over a week and we already have 42 subscribers. Think of the time, effort and postage we can save by contacting 42 people with a single message! As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a GOOD thing!" It will be interesting to see how our list grows in the weeks to come. I will keep you posted as to our numbers, and I hope you will all keep us posted as to your results. Yesterday, I went to the Newberry Library in Chicago to do research, and I found a series of three books, listing deaths in Arkansas between 1914 and 1940. They provide names, counties and dates of death, and include a form for sending for death certificates. The Books are titled "Arkansas Death Record Index, 1914-1923" - "Arkansas Death Record Index 1924-1933" and "Arkansas Death Record Index 1934-1940." All three were compiled by Desmond Walls Allen and published by Arkansas Research, P. O. Box 303, Conway, AR 72033 in 1996-1997. I found about 50 Barger entries, and many listings of related persons with other surnames. This set of books would be an asset to any library's genealogical collection. You might want to talk to your local librarian and suggest acquiring these books, or better yet, donate them to your favorite research facility. I am not familiar with the publisher, but I am going to contact them to see what other books thay have which would be of interest to genealogists. If any of you discover good resources which may be regional in nature, and not likely to be widly distributed out of your area, won't you please pass the information on to the rest of us? It would be greatly appreciated. Susan Barger Donahue Barger Family History Society 411 E. Roosevelt Road Wheaton, IL 60187-5564 Suzid@tripod.net

    1. BARGER - VA & TN
    2. This is my first posting to this list. I have information on the Barger family from the Rockbridge Co VA area who settled in Sullivan Co TN. In particular, I am studying the SUSONG family and started researching the Bargers with the marriage of Frederick Barger to Rebecca Eleanor Susong in Rockbridge Co VA. They moved to the Bristol TN/VA area in the early 1800's and there are numerous BARGER families in this area. Will be glad to share info with other researchers. Does anyone have information on the SUSONG family? leslie in roanoke va zonkerzz@aol.com

    3. Hello to the Barger List Decided to start searching the maternal side of of my grandfathers family. Looking for any information on Alice Geneva Barger. I know she married Ezra Danner on 5/15/1871 in Frederick Co., MD She was born 8/11/1852 (place unknown); died 7/25/1912 and is buried in the Reformed Cemetery in Knoxville, Frederick Co., MD. In an obituary of one of her sons her name was listed as Genevieve Alberta Barger. Death certificate and tombstone says Alice Geneva Barger. Not sure which is correct. On her death certificate it states that her father was (?) Barger; mother was (looked like) Mahala. Would like to know more about her parents and if she had any siblings. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. Shirley

    1. BARGER - W. Tenn, IL, KY
    2. Most of my Barger information came from a family bible. I can't attest to anything other than what I have learned from death certificates. We think of this as a West Tenn family in spite of all the activity in Paducah, KY. BARGER Family 1. William S BARGER was born in Beardstown, Perry Co., TN 3-Jan-1834. He married twice. He married Martha Jane ATCHISON 17-Jun-1860. Martha was divorced from William S Barger 9-Oct-1868. He married Sarah Melvina HAMBRICK 22-Oct-1868. Sarah was born in Chattanooga, TN 14-Feb-1845. Sarah died 12-Jan-1941 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 95 years of age. Barger bible shows Sarah ABERNATHY married William S. Barger. Death certificates for James E. Barger and Aaron Steve Barger show their mother’s maiden name as Hambrick. Death certificate for John Wesley Barger shows “ATHERTON” to be his mother’s maiden name. Residence of Sarah at the time of her death was 121 So. 12th St., Paducah, KY. William was divorced from Martha Jane Atchison 9-Oct-1868. Barger bible gave William’s mi as “S” only. Death certificate for Aaron “Steve” Barger, shows father as William Stone Barger. William S Barger and Martha Jane Atchison had the following children: 2. i. Mary Ann Barger was born in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY 5-May-1861. Mary Ann died 15-Mar-1899 at 37 years of age. I believe the Barger bible originally belonged to Mary Ann Barger. I found on the Barger Society web page: Mary Barger, Spouse: James Green, married 2-Feb-1881, Davidson Co., TN, Source: 1992 IGI. Possible that this is our Mary Ann. 3. ii. Rebecca Susan Barger was born in Benton Co., TN 27-Aug-1863. Rebecca died 1-Oct-1868 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 5 years of age. William S Barger and Sarah Melvina Hambrick had the following children: 4. iii. Cora Marina Barger was born in Metropolis, Massac Co., IL 5-Oct-1869. Cora died 4-Dec-1958 in Gibson Co., TN, at 89 years of age. Her body was interred in Poplar Springs Cemetery, next to Joe Warren. She married twice. She married Joseph Warren in TN, probably Gibson County, 15-Sep-1890. Joseph was born 10-Aug-1848 in TN. Cora Marina Barger married Mr. Christian in Weakley Co., TN, after her children were grown. Nothing is known about Mr. Christian at this point, including his first name. 5. iv. James E. Barger was born in Polk Co., TN 14-Sep-1871. James died 12-May-1925 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 53 years of age. His body was interred 14-May-1925 in Maplelawn Cemetery, Paducah, KY. He married an unknown person. At the time of his death, James was living at 1232 So. 7th St., Paducah, KY. Informant of his death was Mrs. Elizabeth Barger. Occupation given was ‘machinist.’ 6. v. John Wesley Barger was born in Pope Co., Ill 16-Aug-1873. John died 5-Apr-1949 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 75 years of age. His body was interred 7-Qpr-1949 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, McCracken Co., KY. At the time of his death, John was living at 714 So. 9th St., Paducah, KY. Informant of his death was Mrs. Horace Thompson, daughter. Occupation give was ‘retired laborer, ICRR Co.’ 7. vi. Milo V. Barger was born in Decatur, TN 22-Mar-1875. Milo died 19-Jun-1904 at 29 years of age. Milo’s birth and death are recorded in the Barger bible. Dates are also referenced by sources who say Milo is buried in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Gibson Co., TN. 8. vii. William C. Barger was born in Carroll Co., TN 16-Aug-1878. A ggrandaughter of William remembers a Coleman Barger. Perhaps William’s middle name was Coleman. 9. viii. Martha Jane Barger was born in Gibson Co., TN 25-Nov-1880. Yes, I think it’s strange that William and Sarah would have named a child after William’s first wife, whom he divorced. (Because of this situation, I question Martha Jane’s relationship to the family. Perhaps she was the widow of Milo and stayed on with the Barger’s after Milo died.) Thelma believes Martha Jane married a man whose last name was Wilkens. 10. ix. Aaron “Steve” Barger was born in Gibson Co., TN 22-Jan-1883. Aaron died 22-Jan-1953 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 70 years of age. His body was interred 24-Jan-1953 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, KY. He married Katie Unknown. At the time of his death, Steve was living at 12 C Elmwood Court, Paducah, KY. Informant of his death was Katie Barger, wife. Occupation given was ‘retired painter.’ 11. x. Julie E. Barger was born in Gibson Co., TN 2-Apr-1886. Julie E. Barger married a Hoflich, possibly Tom. Know of one child, Mabel Catherine Hoflich, b 5-Jan-1907 at 1024 Ohio St., Paducah, KY and d 9-Jun-1907. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has heard of this family. Thanks, Karla

    3. A note of caution -- someone kindly sent me some data from Alvan Lyell Barger's journal, regarding George Barger of Clearfield Co., PA, and it has some serious conflicts with information on that family that I had previously obtained from other sources, including data from the Clearfield Historical Society, published obituaries of two of my wife's ancestors, and other references. At this point I haven't seen the "journal" itself, and am not in a position to judge which sources are correct -- but my question is, does anyone know how reliable A.L.B's journal is? Thats what I generally do to narrow the search to a certain county or vicinity of the U.S. It was not my intentions to prove or disprove his work . Most often I also find different dates and the like when I look into original records....

    1. Barger vs. Bargar
    2. George Wilkinson
    3. Having just subscribed to this list, I am wondering if "Bargar" is a common spelling variation of the surname BARGER. My 2nd g-grandfather was named George W. Bargar. He was born in Maryland in 1827. I have located his marriage to Amanda Spicer in Baltimore Cty. on Aug. 11, 1849. I believe, but do not have confirmation, that there is an 1827 Maryland birth record indicating the birth of a George Washington Barger(ar). George and Amanda moved to Fairfield Cty., OH sometime after 1852, as my g-grandmother Julia Stansbery Bargar was born in Maryland that year. George died in 1857 in Fairfield Cty. and is buried in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster, OH. George (Bud) Wilkinson Medina, Oh gwilk@ohio.net

    1. Another cousin found!
    2. Susan Donahue
    3. Good morning, friends & cousins! Another cousin found me. This morning, I heard from Bill Baze (cactusbl@netzone.com). He is the great-grandson of Cornelia Angeline Barger. She was the sister of my great-grandfather, William O. Barger, Jr., of the Henderson County, Tennessee Bargers. Bill responded to my query on the Henry County, TN homepage. That has been a wonderful resource for me. Last Year, Reba Hurt and I made contact through the Henry County site. Those of you searching the Fronabarger family will be interested to know that Bill Baze furnished a "missing Link" between the Fronabargers and the Bargers of Henderson County. His great-grandmother, Cornelia Angleine Barger, b. 1858, Tippah Co., MS, married William Bishop Fronabarger. For reference, here is the information from the 1870 U.S. Census of Henderson County which lists both siblings, Cornelia Angeline Barger and William O. Barger: WILLIAM O. BARGER, age 41, birthplace, TN (House No. 98, Family No. 98 - Occupation, Farmer Land Value: $4,000 - Personal Property: $41,393) CATHERINE BARGER, age 39, birthplace, TN Others listed in household: REBECCA BARGER, age 20, MS SARAH A. BARGER, age 19, MS GEORGE M. BARGER, age 17, MS MARY S. BARGER, age 14, MS CORNELIA A. BARGER, age 12, MS JOHN S. BARGER, age 9, MS WILLIAM O. BARGER, age 6, IL DAVID R. 3. There is a book at the Rowan County Library in Salisbury, North Carolina which may be very helpful to some of you. We have tried to obtain a copy from the author, but he tells us it is out of print and that no further copies are available. It was written by Mr. George Hahn, P. O. Box 128, Mt. Pleasant, NC 28124, and is titled "Barrier, Berger, Barger Families: Some of Their Relatives and Related Places and Events of Their Times." If any of you know how we can obtain a copy, would you please let us know? We would like to have a reference copy to make available to all Barger family researchers. 3. Seeking Information on John Barger. Here is what I Know from personal research. John was born abt. 1818 in Clay County Kentucky (Birth Yr. reported from 1900 census) He married Elizabeth Baker in 1842 in Clay county. In 1859 He and Elizabeth filed a Birth return in Knox County Kentucky Here is the information from that birth return Name of Father John Barger Name of Mother Elizabeth Baker Name of Child John Bargo Birth day 2-8-1859 Bplace of Father Clay county Bplace of Mother Beacomb N.C. Residence of parents Knox county Ky. They had 12 children (?) Before 1880 the family went by the surname Barger. they are listed in the 1860 and 1870 census as Barger in the 1880 Census they are ALL Bargo. Early Marriage bonds show that John and Elizabeth's children married using the name Barger ...examples are... Robert Barger married Hannah Callebs 1863 Peter Barger married Mary Scalf 1868 Everyone slowly became Bargo on Paper trails and that became the predominate spelling by 1880. February 3 1885 John Bargo (same as above barger) Married again to Johanna Price On the marriage bond he gave no information on his parents . I have looked into several counties and close states for other Bargo/Barger variations but have only found a few in states such as TN . In short I would very much like to know if anyone has traces of what could be proven siblings of John OR possibly parents . Willing to research in-depth ! If you can be of any help or have any ideas on how to get over this brick wall Please contact me at kjbrigg@inetdirect.net Thanks for your time ! Kim
