    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Barefoot, bearfoot, Barfus. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VRC.2ACIB/246.1.1 Message Board Post: There are multiple origins for this surname. So far I have seen messages, and found examples, from Native American, German, Scottish, and Irish. So, the only way to know which applies to your ancestry is to do the research and learn where your ancestors originated. Remember that surnames in English are also sometimes translations and other times are based on pronounciation of the name. This surname is also spelled Bearfoot and Barfus.

    3. You're ancestors were probably from Northern Ireland, and thus, displaced Scots. The Barefoots are from Scotland, and before that, from Norway, and other Scandanavian countries. Barfot, Barfod - is a Scandanavian word. linhoov@comcast.net wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VRC.2ACIB/246.1 > >Message Board Post: > >I have in my records somewhere that they were bare of leg or bare of foot as in wearing kilts or kilt like clothing. 2. Daniel Jackson
    3. Carol, The first Barefoot-Register marriage that I know of is Christopher "Chris" Register to Barbara Barefoot of Sampson Co. NC. Barbara Ellen Barefoot (3 Oct. 1879 - 14 Sept. 1928) was the daughter of Reddin Barefoot and Annie Tart. There were also several Barefoot-Register marriages in the 1820s in Columbus Co. NC. Since you mentioned Redden as a possible name I figured the Sampson Co. line may be yours. 1. Barefoot/Elder/McGehee
    2. Jack McGehee
    3. I hit the send button too soon on that last email. My name is Jack McGehee. My gr grandfather was James McGehee who married Carintha A Elder in Grayson County in 1866. Carintha's father, John Lee Elder was from NC and Ga. He first married Sarah Ammons, then he married a woman named Cathrine, and then finally he married Sarah Saunders. She was the widow of Ferdinand Tilman Saunders. She was Sarah Barefoot before she married the Saunders. Im wondering if there was another connection between the McGehees and the Barefoot family thought? Jack

I feel that Noah Barefoot, Sr.'s (b. 1725 d. May 1793 in Johnston Co.) daughter Nancy would be a good candidate but have been unable to find any proof.
