I recently learned of a Gertrude Barber who was a genealogist. I saw a reference to her on a site called "17th Century Immigrants to New York." The reference said specifically: Old Dutch Houses by Gertrude Barber VRBM-----Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts (1908) This peaked my curiosity because my g-g-grandfather's name was Stephen Van Rensselaer Barber. I'm not sure who his parents were are where he was born, I haven't been able to verify the info I have, but what I do have can be found on my Barber page at http://members.aol.com/gr8kat1/KatGen/Barber.htm I've been trying to figure out exactly why his middle name was Van Rensselaer (or Rensellar, I've seen it spelled both ways) and wondered if it was a family name. I received an e-mail from the fellow who mentioned that book on the "17th Century Immigrants" site, and this is what he said about Gertrude Barber and her book: "Had tried my library in Cambridge New York, and they put in a search thru inter-library loan, and a copy was found at the Renssealer Poly Tech in Albany New York. That was 20 yrs. ago. Gertrude Barber was a genealogist,I am sure she is deceased now." Does anyone know anything about Gertrude and/or her writings? This week I also found someone answer a query of mine to the Albany, NY, Rootsweb Board from "Linda." This is what she said: "Took me awhile to formulate some answer--TenEycks have many ties to Ontario Canada. A Miriam Barber there, married one. We had a Jeremiah Van Rensselaer Ten Eyck in NJ. Have a look at http://www.my-ged.com/ayers TenEyck site. Surf through surnames (Barbour, Barbor, Barbar, Barber, various spelling of Van Ren., Ten Eyck has lots of variations) see if dates and places are on our pages. Check Gendex under Van, Barber, post queries at GenForum by country, county, state or province, surname. Same at FamilyHistory.com surname message boards. Smart of you to look for clues in middle names! Good luck!" I haven't found any information on this Miriam Barber that links her to my family tree yet. Does anyone else know anything about this her or this line? Thanks in advance for your help!
