    3. Dear Linda and David, The father of this family was George Wade Barber. He was related to Littleton Barber and may have been his father, may not have been. Your Mary (David) could not have been this Mary. My family has the marriage certificate for your Mary and T.J. Smith. I don't remember the exact date but I can find it, but I think she was already married by this census. We have some information from an Ola Barber in Valdosta who was the granddaughter of Thomas Holden Barber and we have some we dug up. William Barber, George Wade Barber and Holden Barber were brothers. They had two sisters, Sarah and Mary. They had a half-brother named Thomas Street, who mentioned them and/or their children quite handsomely in his will (of which I have a copy). These brothers and their two sisters we believe to have been the children of Joseph Barber. But there is an odd coincidence here. If they were Joseph's children, Joseph had to have been married to a woman who was the widow of a man named Street and the mother of Thomas and Richard Street as well as the mother of William, George Wade and Holden. There was a John Barber in Bertie, N.C., though, whom we know to have been married to a Mary Street. Ola Barber's information gives Joseph's wife as Mary. So that means there must have been two Mary Streets during this same time period who each married Barbers, or John and not Joseph was the father of these five Barber brothers and sisters. However, I've been in touch with two descendants of John and Mary Street who know nothing about their ancestor Fredrick having these brothers and sisters. Anyway, my family believes Littleton Barber, my mother's greatgrandfather, to have been the brother of Mary, who was born just a couple of years after him in 1823, I believe. We think their parents were possibly a different George Barber who was a close relation of the previous group and Elizabeth Stanford, or that they were earlier children of George Wade and Francis Barber, before Joseph, George and Elizabeth came along. George Wade's son, George B. W. (stands for Boy Wade, in other words instead of Junior they would have called him George Boy) was killed in the Civil War. We have his will, too. I don't know if Linda's Joseph could fit into this family but not as the Joseph mentioned in this census who was 19 in 1850, and not as the father of William, George Wade, et al, because they were all born in the last two decades of the 1700's so their father must have born in the 1760's or earlier. Sorry for the long post but maybe some of this will ring a bell with some other "cousins" out there. - Janet ---------- > From: DNHAMILL@aol.com > To: BARBER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [BARBER-L] Re: Joseph BARBER abt 1830 or abt 1803 > Date: Sunday, May 07, 2000 8:11 PM > > Hi Linda, > Sorry to be slow to respond to your message repeated below, and I can't offer > much help. > The only Joseph Barber I have is the one here: > 1850 Census - Columbia Co GA pg 21 > Barber, Frances 50 F [b 1799-1800] 500 acres b Ga > , Joseph 19 M [b 1830-1831] b Ga > , George 16 M [b 1833-1834] b Ga > , Mary 3 F [b1846-1847] b Ga [it has been suggested that > this is Littleton Barber's child] > I think Mary may be my Mary Barber marr Thomas Jefferson Smith, > > > It seems like that the father of this family may have been named Joseph or > George. 3. Hi Janet, I appreciate any clues that might lead me to my Joseph Barber's family. There are some folks out there that have suggested the theory that he was a Melungeon and that he just picked a name for himself, and that is why I can't find parents for him. Who knows, it could be true. Thanks, and keep me in mind if you come across anything that could link to my Joseph.
