    1. [BARBER-L] Title of Capt.
    2. Although I agree with the various military origins of the Capt. There were people who were nicknamed "Cap" "Capt" by people and the family began to believe he had been a Captain in some military branch. One of my children's lines swore that a particular grandfather had been a Capt during the Civil War and there was even an obituary saying so. HOWEVER, his military records showed he had been promoted to a Sgt, deserted his company, been caught, busted, and ended the war as he started a Pvt. And older relative once told me that many men after the CW were nicknamed the "Cap" as in "Hey, Cap (t)" when they were met on the street, etc. Whether he was called Capt to cover his tracks, or as a term of endearment by society is up for speculation. I just thought I would throw that in as an example of not trusting some information------although I realize in this situation, it's coming from other records and isn't applicable.
