    1. Re: [BARBER-L] My Line
    2. LILLIAN BARNES
    3. Linda, I can only speculate what the name change was about. My gg-grandmother Eliza Ann was a well known midwife. Even after the name change, people still referred to her as "Aunt Liza KING". Even more weird is the fact that my aunt called her Eliza Ann BARBER, but her first cousin (they never knew each other), called her Eliza Ann KING. I am assuming her maiden name was CHANCE, because it was given as such by her daughter, on the death certificate of John Wesley and Eliza Ann's son. Keep in mind I have no marriage, birth or death certificates for my gg-grandparents, so this pieced together. Just to really get you thinking, I found a Hyde apprentice record for a David LONGTOM aka David BARBER, also found a reference to an Coree tribe Indian leader called Coreehineecia known as BARBER, and a Hyde marriage certificate for a Croatan BARBER. The names CHANCE, BARBER AND LONGTOM are said to be descendants of the Native Americans that occupied a reservation in Hyde in the mid to late 1700's. CROATAN and COREE, are names of tribes that were also on the same reservation after the Tuscarora Wars. As you can see, I am confused. Hopefully, someday I'll find the answers.
