Dan, Thanks for helping us out again. Your research has been invaluable to me in the past. Here are a few of my notes: Mary Barber deed 1819 can be seen here, also: Deed of Mary Barber of Anson County North Carolina at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncanson/barberdeed.htm Sidney (Siday?)Barber was probably Elyda Barber. See the 1819 deed of Mary Barber to confirm. He was assigned Lot#3, referenced in both deeds. Elida Barber (who married Jane Dowdy) was not in the deeds because he is not a son of John and Mary. I am in contact with Elida's descendants. Elida was a grandson, born about 1799, married to Jane Dowdy, who is also in my line. John and Mary's son Elida was born 1750's. See above. Allen Barber 1795 was my g-g-grandfather, and a grandson of John and Mary. He and Martha moved to TN. Allen mentioned in the deeds was much younger (1760's), and I have been unable to find more, except that he sold his land in 1824 (I think). Correct me if wrong. Mary Barber may have been a wonderful woman, but she probably did not have children in her late 50's, huh? So, your deed records are correct, Dan. Someone somewhere just added Allen 1795 (Mary was 56?) and Elida 1799 (Mary was 59?), and it has been passed along to others. I will see if I can dig out some of my old notes on these people, especially Capt John. This may have been an honorary title, but I would like to know either way. Rose

After rechecking my files, I find that Isabel Jordan first married Mr. Wray, possibly in PA, had a daughter, Mary, and then married Mr. Barber and had John. There is no record of other children. John Barber can be traced in numerous deed and other records in Tryon County from 1768, about when he would have come of age, and then, when Lincoln and Rutherford were created in place of Tryon in 1779, he can be traced without interruption in numerous other records up to the time of his death, associated with same men and families that he was associated with before Tryon became extinct. Among the proofs of his Rev War service are: The pension file of John Venables (he entered service in place of John Jordan), nephew of Richard Venable who was married to John Barber's aunt Mary Jordan. "In May or June 1780, when living with his uncle Richard Venables in Lincoln Co., NC, he entered service as a volunteer in a company of light horse or militia. He found his own horse under command of Capt. John Barber of Lincoln County ..." Richard Venables was a close neighbor to John Barber in the 1790 Lincoln county census. The pension file of Josiah Martin W.1047 issued Oct. 1, 1832 ; wife Mary (McClary) Martin Her certificate 3248 issued Jan 22,1 1849 Nashville, TN. Josias/Josiah Martin served from Lincoln Co, NC under Cap't John Barber of NC Mil. Josiah born February 1757 in Cumberland Co, PA. He died in Rutherford Co, TN 17 Sept 1833. Cap't Isaac White was his commander at one time. He was Lt. under him. Josiah Martin was John Barber's brother-in-law. Isaac White witnessed John Barber's will in 1799 and various deeds made by him before that. Several descendants have joined the DAR on this line. His tombstone recorded his date of death as 17 Mar 1799 and age as 51. His stone has apparently gone missing since the Warwick Cemetery was surveyed. Kevin
While we're all thinking about our Barbers, let's try this: Does anyone have a Barber that was in Wilkes, Columbia, or Oglethorpe County, Ga. from 1800-1870'ish time period and you need verification ....this is where mine have lived and I can keep an eye out for yours while I'm looking for mine. Becky
Please! SOMEBODY out there must know of Jefferson Barber of NY c. 1800. Sometime prior to 1841 he married Hannah A. Carpenter. Don't know where/when either was born, nor to whom. I do know they had at least one child, Lucy, b. 1841 - NY. Won't someone pleeeeaaaase help??? I am about to crack my skull beating it against this brick wall!!! Barbara mailto:lachance@ccis.com
All, The reason I was so curious about the source on Mary is that I've seen John Barber of Tryon/Lincoln confused with John Barber of Anson. So whenever anyone says the name John with a military rank involved, I assume they are talking about John Barber of Tryon/Lincoln as I've never found proof of John Barber of Anson's service. After looking through my notes I did find that The NC Rev. Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots and Desc. Vol. 1 has the following entry (Nathan Barber researched these and sent them to me): Barber, John (R-Pat-NC) 1738-1802 m. Mary Barber Also in NC Revolutionary War Soldiers list which has the following: Barber, Jno., pt. Blount's Company, enlisted or Commissioned July 20, 1778, served 9 mos. We can't be postitive that these are the same John Barber as John Barber of Anson but it seems likely. I do have a copy of the copy of the DAR papers of Alonza Marcus Arnett and it references DAR #358051, 253866 and 399468. (Does anyone have these or know how to get a copy? ) The Arnett papers say that John Barber was a Member Comm. of Safety, member Provincial Congress and member of General Assembly. It also states he was married to Mary (Allen?) in 1754. These papers also mention his children as follows: Abraham, Nicey, Leday, William, Arley, Zebey, James, John, Nancy, Allen, Gatsey and Mary b. 1767. The sources for the DAR papers mention Family Bible and writings as well as Genealogical and Family history, State Archives, Austin, Texa. Just comparing my info. with Wanda's and the DAR info. I tried to mark my comments clearly and I'm just trying to figure this out as I've been after this a while. John Barber 1738 Anson Co., N.C. - 10 Nov. 1802 Anson Co. + Mary Ann Allen 1739 - 1807-Dan's comment: A Richard Allen lived next to John's property so it does seem likely-however, the death date is probably wrong as Mary Barber sold her dower rights to John Spears in 1819, Anson County DB U pg. 126. I had left this deed reference off my web site article, but I just updated it to add it (thanks to the reminder from Rose!). I have a copy of the deed and its clearly Mary Barber widow of John Barber. 1. William Barber 1757 Anson Co.-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found-died before 1802 as his property went to his heirs in the deed that split up John's property 2. Arbey Barber 1758 Anson Co..-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found 3. James Barber 1760-1847 Anson Co...-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found, but I don't have a birthdate or deathdate 4. John Barber, Jr. 1761..-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found but I don't have a birthdate 5. Nancy Barber 1762..-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found but I don't have a birthdate 6. Sidney Barber 1769-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found but I don't have a birthdate 7. Curlee Barber 1781..-Dan's comment-is this Mary who married John Curlee? I have her born in 1761 and died in 1827-my source is the DAR Records of Alonza Marcus Arnett from Bible Records and Familly History at State Archives, Austin, Texas 8. Zibe Zibary Barber 1784 + Sarah Dobbs-..-Dan's comment: verified by deeds I've found-Zibey in deed but I haven't seen the birthdate or marriage before 9. Allen Barber 1795 _ Martha "Patsy" Kilpatrick 1801-1869-Dan's comment verified by deeds I've found although I don't know about the marriage to Kilpatrick-did they stay in Anson? 10. Elida Barber _ Jane B. Dowdy-Dan's comment-not in deeds 11. Abraham Barber, Sr. 1754-1811 + Rhoda (my line)-Dan's comment-verified in deeds-my line also, I think-Rhoda may have been a Braswell 12. Nicey Barber 1755 + John Davis-Dan's comment-verified in deeds-I haven't seen the birthdate before 13. Liday Barber 1756 -Dan's comment-not in deeds-could she have died young? 14. William Barber 1757 - 1802 + Mary 1760 - Dan's comment:repeat of #1 above ?? 15. Arby Barber 1758- Dan's comment:repeat of #2 above? Here's the rest I have on Mary and John Curlee: Descendants of Mary Barber Generation No. 1 1. MARY BARBER (JOHN1) was born 1767 in Anson Co., NC, and died 1829 in Anson Co., NC. I'm afraid I know nothing about the siblings of John Barber, if there were any. I know that his mother remarried, when he was fairly young. I have found no indication of the name of John Barber's father. It could be that Isabel was a widow when she arrived in America, I really don't know. I hope to discover more, someday.
