Hi Joseph, Again, I have to wonder if we are kin. I have a George Barber b 12-26-1858, in MO probably as the other kids in this family were. I know it is not your family, but wonder if they are cousins. Some went on to GA, LA, TX. The Benton name shows up in our Queen line who intermarried with Barber, pos Cherokee. HI LINDA MY NAME IS DIANE AND JOE AND I ARE RESEARCHING THE SAME LINE WE JUST DISCOVERED WE ARE COUSINS. SO MAYBE BETWEEN THE THREE OF US WE CAN FIGURE IT OUT. DIANE
Hello to all, Anyone have any information on George Benton Barber, born in 1857-Washington Parish LA? Married Molly Watson about 1879 probably in Pike County MS? George Benton was the son of Swinton W. Barber and Mary Letchworth. Thanks in advance!
I recently learned of a Gertrude Barber who was a genealogist. I saw a reference to her on a site called "17th Century Immigrants to New York." The reference said specifically: Old Dutch Houses by Gertrude Barber VRBM-----Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts (1908) This peaked my curiosity because my g-g-grandfather's name was Stephen Van Rensselaer Barber. I'm not sure who his parents were are where he was born, I haven't been able to verify the info I have, but what I do have can be found on my Barber page at http://members.aol.com/gr8kat1/KatGen/Barber.htm I've been trying to figure out exactly why his middle name was Van Rensselaer (or Rensellar, I've seen it spelled both ways) and wondered if it was a family name. I received an e-mail from the fellow who mentioned that book on the "17th Century Immigrants" site, and this is what he said about Gertrude Barber and her book: "Had tried my library in Cambridge New York, and they put in a search thru inter-library loan, and a copy was found at the Renssealer Poly Tech in Albany New York. That was 20 yrs. ago. Gertrude Barber was a genealogist,I am sure she is deceased now." Does anyone know anything about Gertrude and/or her writings? This week I also found someone answer a query of mine to the Albany, NY, Rootsweb Board from "Linda." This is what she said: "Took me awhile to formulate some answer--TenEycks have many ties to Ontario Canada. A Miriam Barber there, married one. We had a Jeremiah Van Rensselaer Ten Eyck in NJ. Have a look at http://www.my-ged.com/ayers TenEyck site. Surf through surnames (Barbour, Barbor, Barbar, Barber, various spelling of Van Ren., Ten Eyck has lots of variations) see if dates and places are on our pages. Check Gendex under Van, Barber, post queries at GenForum by country, county, state or province, surname. Same at FamilyHistory.com surname message boards. Smart of you to look for clues in middle names! Good luck!" I haven't found any information on this Miriam Barber that links her to my family tree yet. Does anyone else know anything about this her or this line? Thanks in advance for your help! The James Barbour that is listed as the son of James Barbour III & Frances Throckmorton could be my James Barbour/Barber, assuming that their son James did not die young. If they married 1762/1763, my James could fit. James Barber/Barbour, born ca. 1765 in Virginia, died 1847, Clarke Co. GA, was in Clarke Co at least by 1803, when he was shown as a member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church in Watkinsville. He was married to Penelope, don't know her last name. I am sending this to BARBER-L so the cousins can see it. David On Fri, 18 Feb 2000, Judy Bruckner wrote: > This is information I found in my Barbour files. Hi Joseph, Your William would be the right age to be the father of my Joseph Barber b abt 1803 in VA. His descendants went to LA, MS and GA, and some to TX. This Joseph m Celia Jones (who may or may not have been part Indian) in 1830 in Franklin Co VA. A descendant of this Joseph is also named Joseph (Grimes) and lives in MS. We could compare kids names and see if it looks like they are related. Would you like me to send an outline? Linda lmenikos@flash.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Joseph D. Thanks, David, for the information...we may be on to something...I feel sure that there must be a connection. I've packed away some of my genealogial stuff, so will ask my dad for a copy of the marriage certificate to send you. My sister Janet Finley Davis may have this information (since my stuff is packed up) but there were apparently 2 George W. Barbers floating around, possibly cousins...there are some documents (wills and such) in which there was a distinction made, naming George WADE...and making it sound as if it were natural to confuse the two. I had written to a guy who was descended from Asa Barber (brother of William) because he had some information I thought was interesting...he has 2 missing children from Asa's line...a male born around 1820 (Littleton born 1821) and a female named Mary born around 1822-1823, if I remember correctly. Strange, huh? I'm hoping to be able to trace Littleton's other descendants and see if they know anything. Have you checked www.genforum.com for the Barber website? I posted Littleton's descendants there. Becky ( my c key keeps sticking, so I apologize for any weird spellings in my post.)
