That is very interesting. Elizabeth Barber, widow of George, married Mathew Patton in 1750/51. She had 5 children by Patton, I believe. If she was born in 1701, then she was 50 when she married Matthew, which is usually past the child-bearing age. One possibility for parents of George...John Barber and Elizabeth Songhurst Barber came from Sussex, England on the ship "Welcome" to Chester, Pa in August of 1682. Also her father John Songhurst made the trip. In 1682 both John Barber and John Songhurst were granted land by Wm. Penn. Also, Sarah Barber, dtr of George and Elizabeth, married Reese Watkins of Chester, PA in 1757. Also, Reese Watkins was brother of Margaret Watkins of Chester PA who married George Barber II in 1767. Also, some of the Barbers' neighbors in VA came from the Chester and Lancaster counties of PA. I still have not been able to make a definite connection, but believe this is a likely scenario. As I understand it, the children of George and Elizabeth were George II, Plyer, John, and Sarah, who was born about 1740 and married in 1757. Hi Janet, I am in Fort Worth, TX, and our library has some of the Dawes books, and the Archives has some info too. A lady at our library suggested I also check the Henderson Roll and another roll that I have forgotten the name of. The Dawes only shows the names of those who applied for Citizenship. The other rolls are folks that were too late for enrollment, etc.The Cherokee by Blood info I got from an email list. I have misplaced that folder or it might give the name of the person who helped me. I will try later to find it and let you know if possible, who gave me the info. It does not matter how many web sites her name is on, if there is no document showing the evidence. I would just like to know for sure, that is all. There was a George Barber that sailed from London to Virginia in 1635, a hundred years before there is documentation on George and Elizabeth Barber in Augusta County. I do not know if that is the correct family, or if George's (of Augusta) family came much later and passed through Pennsylvania first, as so many other Augusta settlers did. Linda, This reference to the "Cherokee by blood books" intrigues me. I'm not familiar with the books, but my husband's grandfather was half Cherokee and looked it, and my family has rumors of Cherokee ancestry, so I'd like to know if that's the title of the books and where can they be found? Is there anything like that online? My husband's greatgrandmother was called Mary Alabama Hardeman, and she was born in Montgomery in 1837. We thought her parents might have gone there to escape being sent to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. If anyone knows anything about any Cherokee Hardemans or Hardmans, please let me know. Linda, I can't even find out her stepfathers name. Well, all we can do is keep plugging along. Joe
Joe, I wish, I hope, always hope some clue will turn up to link our Joseph to parents and sibs. I found two Celia Jones in the Cherokee by blood books, but neither appeared to be her. My Joseph Barber married Celia Jones whose mother was Eady Martin. Are we on the track of something? Joseph Grimes
Hi, My gggrandfather was born1803 in VA, place unknown. He married Celia Jones in Franklin Co. I have tried to tie him into Pitts. Co Barbers but without success. His name Joseph A or U or W Barber. The wedding papers I have lists him as Joseph Barbour but he signed Joel Barber. One child was born in VA County unknown, Isaac Jones Barber. The family was in MO. prior to 1850 with a stop in TN. Joseph, and Joel are both names in later generations. Joseph Grimes
Brenda, Thank you for responding to my inquiry. The only thing I know right now is that my great grandfathers name was John W Barber and he was born ca 1815 probably in Pittsyvania County. He married my great grandmother, Mary "Polly" Simpson in Nov 1840 in that county. They were residing there as late as 1880. Thanks, Jan
The Mary Elizabeth Barber I am researching maiden name I believe to be Simpson. She married James William Martin. Thanks
