Lori: As far as I know, there is no connection to any Barber from Northumberland Co. I haven't gotten further back than early 1800's in Westmoreland Co., PA. Hi, If you think Jody and Billie have problems, no one has every heard of my Barber line. John Wesley Barber my gg-grandfather, born circa 1800 married Eliza Ann Chance (Indian), born circa 1818. Eliza was brought to Hyde County, NC from Ocracoke, NC (Outer Banks) by Indians. John Wesley was a widower (first wife unknown) with four sons, Wesley b. 1832, Spencer b. 1838, Hezekiah b, 1840 and David b.1841. John Wesley had the following children together. Billie Ann b. 1844, Wm. Ashby b. 1846, Aquilla b. 1847, Shaw b. 1850, Basil Floyd b. 1851, Major b. 1855, Jeremiah b. 1857, John b. 1858, Marvel b. 1861 and Betsy Elizabeth b. 1863.All remained in Hyde County and were listed on the 1850 census as "free people of color". Now to really put the icing on the cake, all of these family members (even the married ones) changed their last name from KING to BARBER sometime between 1870 and 1880. I haven't a clue as to why. On the 1850 there were other Barber families living in Hyde and all listed as "free people of color". Any detectives out there? Lillian
I am glad to know someone else has a Barber line of which no one has heard. Mine is a Thomas Barber who married Mary Horn in Madison County Tennessee in 1849. I can not find them on the 1850 census and by 1860 Thomas is long gone and Mary is living with her father Henry Horn in Fulton County Arkansas. Anyone out there ever heard of these people? Hi everyone, I know just how Jody Nestler feels. It seems that every Barber in the world is related to Moses Barber except for my family and Jody's. Jane Barber, my gggrandmother, born in 1791, married Reverend John Haskins, born in 1784, both in Essex County, N.Y. moved to Crawford County, Randolph Township, Pa. where they raised their children and lived out their lives. I cannot find any record of their parentage in N.Y. Frustrating! Now, if they were just relatives of Moses Barber, the whole world would beat a path to my door <grin>.Thanks for listening! I am another who has no ties to Moses Barber (I think?). The farthest I can trace my Barber/Barbours is to a Randolph Barber born about 1765, possibly the son of a David Barber of Pittsylvania Co, VA. Would love to have more information on him & his family/parents/siblings, etc. Want to get back to the 'boat' and his origins! Sincerely, Marilyn Barber Danville, IN
Hi Marilyn - Nice to see a Barber listing that may connect with mine - another non-Moses. I can't help you get to the boat - sorry - but my Abraham Barber, b. 1837, in one census claimed to be from Pittsylvania Co VA. At his marriage, he only gave the name of his mother - Barbary Barber. Do these names mean anything to you? Thanks in advance. Jody and Billie, I'll throw in another Barber line! Mine were in Maryland, mostly Anne Arundel County. My ggggrandmother was Anne (or Hannah) Barber who married Gideon White. Their daughters, Elizabeth and Ann Sparrow White, were both married to Dr. George A. Barber, my gggrandfather. My ggrandmother, Elizabeth Barber, was the daughter of George and Ann. Elizabeth married William Henry Boswell. Their son, Henry or Harry Wyatt Boswell married Ida Magdelene Whitmer of Hardy County, West Virginia. (Henry or Harry - he seemed to use the names interchangably, but he's found both ways with Ida, so I know it's the same character!) Henry and Ida are my mother's parents. If this rings a bell out there, I have some dates and other children. Carol
Jody, Have you seen the World Family Tree CDs? I believe I have seen these names in my searches. I will do some checking. My own Barbers are from Co. Sligo, Ireland and there were Samuels amongst them...BUT the Adams name sounds like it is from Northern Ireland, Co. Antrim or Tyrone. I have done research on another part of my father's family in Dublin and in Belfast PRO. Bill Barber Hudson, NH
