Hi Lillian, I hear a very faint ringing of bells here. Perhaps you have posted this in the past. My Joseph was b 1803 and seems to have no relatives. If the family changed names to avoid the "problem" of being part Indian which the census takers did not want to acknowledge and lumped them into "color", then that may be my Joseph's problem. We were told we were part indian, but no proof. Joseph's dau Martha Jane was my gg-grandmother, and she looks Indian as does her dau Texanna. And, as a matter of fact, Texanna named a son John Wesley Magee. This was a child of her first marriage, and I descend from 2nd to Dooley. Hummmm. Could we have a connection? Of course, if they did not adopt the Barber name until 1870, that would not fit as Joseph Barber seemed to always be Barber. On the Bass line, those descending from a marriage or two with the Nansemond Indians had problems too, of trying to prove they were indian rather than colored. So this was pretty prevalent at times in certain areas at least. ----- Original Message ----- From: LILLIAN BARNES <VINNETTA@worldnet.att.net> To: <BARBER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2000 1:33 PM Subject: Re: [BARBER-L] My Line > Hi, > If you think Jody and Billie have problems, no one has every heard of my > Barber line. Carol, I am looking for a connection to Joseph Barber, b 1803 in Franklin Co, Va (or vicinity) His descendants migrated to GA, AL, & TX. Children: Isaac, Martha Jane, Sanders, William, James P, Celia (for wife), Joel A, Sarah E & Mary Ellen. Any of these connect or match those in your line? Marilyn, Maybe my ancestor was "in the same boat" as yours. I also have a Barber (Joseph b 1803)who seems to have been all alone in the world as far as I can tell. He was b in Franklin Co, VA, I think. I have other lines who were in Pittsylvania Co, so this post got my attention. Joseph named his kids: Isaac, Martha Jane, Sanders, William, James P, Celia (for wife), Joel A, Sarah E, and Mary Ellen. Sometimes naming patterns give clues. Anything look promising? I am amazed with the negative response to folks posting questions concerning their American lines on Barber. When I first joined this list, it was deader than a door nail. There were NO posts at all. So I am overjoyed with all the responses. So, if you want to see more posts about Irish or English or Scots Barber families, post them. Maybe it will help someone else. Hi Lori, Elizabeth White, daughter of Gideon White and Anne Barber: I don't have a date of birth for her, but I'd estimate 1805-1810. She was born in Anne Arundel Co., MD, and married Dr. George A. Barber in 1827. She must have died young, because George married her younger sister, Ann Sparrow White in 1836. Ann was born in 1818 and died in 1901. Carol
As this list appears to be dominated by people seeking BARBERs in the US, I will make one last query before I unsubscribe. Do any of you have BARBERs who came from Wiltshire, particularly Horningsham? Cheers Pat Have one James Barber, b. abt. 1588, Berkshire, s/o Thomas, father of Mary (1618) and James (1620). Unfortunately, I have very little more than this on them. I'd appreciate it if you could add to and/or correct what I have: I suspect the paucity of English Barbers may be due in part to the fact that many of us haven't traced the family back that far yet - though I'm sure we all would like to. Stick around, Pat - things may improve. Bob buzz70@netnitco.net
It's not that we don't it's just that we don't know who and from where yet. Don't give up on the list. I have been on it for over six months and just today found that my Barber was not born in Holland as the book in Indiana said. I've been looking on the wrong continent for a couple of years but the list has just sorted it out for me. Back five more generations. Winston wouldn't give up you shouldn't either. Just my opinion, Phyllis in BC, Canada Pat Churchill wrote: > > > > > As this list appears to be dominated by people seeking BARBERs in the > US, I will make one last query before I unsubscribe. > > Do any of you have BARBERs who came from Wiltshire, particularly Horningsham? > > Cheers > Pat > -- > ----- > Pat Churchill > http://www.geocities.com/pat_churchill > > The floggings will continue until morale improves > > ==== BARBER Mailing List ==== > Aren't you glad you're a supporter of Rootsweb? > Don't we wish everyone could be one too! > http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
