    1. [BANAT-L] Given name Nandor?
    2. mep
    3. Hi, I sometimes get confused with the German versions of shortened names. For example, I understand Janka is short for Johanna. I have an ancestor named Nandor Buchmann that I got from a hand written tree that very closely matches a Ferdinand Buchmann. Is Nandor a shortened name for Ferdinand? Thanks for reading. 3. Hello Martin, I am not positive, but my first thought when seeing this is Alexandor as Hungarians would shorten it as Sandor, but I guess I can see Ferdinand for it also. My cousin's husband is Ferdinand and lives in Austria, they shorten it as "Ferry". 3. Hi, There are a few links out there that give name conversions. The one I use to use is no longer available. But I did find this one. Hopefully this will help with the confusion. behindthename.com/names/usuage/Hungarian This is not a link since that is not allowed. Just type it into your browser and it should work. 3. Martin, I agree that Nandor would be a derivative of Ferdinand. My great uncle was named Ferdinando (Italian version of the name with an "o" on the end; he was born in Asti, Northwestern Italy in 1896). His nicknames were Nando, as well as Fred. You mentioned the family tree where you found Nandor was handwritten; could it be the scribe looks like there is an "r" at the end, but perhaps it actually ends with and "O". Just a thought.
