    1. [BANAT-L] Steinbach Family
    2. Kaden Steinbach
    3. Hello, my name is Kaden Steinbach I am 16. I have always been interested in my familys history. my great grandpa John Steinbach was born in Schuschara in 1923. His parents were Josef and Eva Steinbach, my great grandpa never talked about his dad. I remember meeting my great grandpa only once and that was on his deathbed. I wish he was still around so I could talk to him about our family history. my family was captured by the soviets but later escaped and moved to Braunau. at that point my great great grandpa Josef was no longer with them. I don't know if he was conscripted into the Prinz Eugen and died on the front lines or died in a camp.

    2. Kaden, In all these years of the Banat list this is the first time that I can recall that the matter of Schuschara has come up on the list. The German name for the town was Sanddorf, reflecting its location in the sand hills of the Banat Military Frontier. Note from the map that there are no nearby towns supporting the view that the sandy soils were unsuitable for profitable agriculture. The recently published book by Holbach suggests that Sanddorf was established in 1892 which makes it unlikely you will find any family data on the internet. Did it even have a Catholic church? If your guys were born before 1891 you will need search in another locality. I do not find any Steinbachs in the family book of the nearest Banater Deutsch settlement of Mramorak. There are some Steinbachs in the Pantschowa family book but in the 18th century so you are faced with a substantial gap to make a possible connection. In my view, you will need to find a contact with access to the Serb archives in NeuSatz to solve your problem. You might consider contacting Stasa Cvetkovic at synergia@gmail.com for this purpose. His rates are very reasonable.
