    3. Happy Birthday Bob! Me - sometime after the CompuServe days... Earliest email I still have in Outlook is from Monika back in 1997 along with some from Norbert, Wolfgang, Franz, Uwe, Chris, Dennis, Guenther, Gordon, Dave & others... One of these days I have to go through some of those old emails for all the sites which I saved! :-) Ed. -----Original Message----- From: BANAT [mailto:banat-bounces+edward.lowitz1=verizon.net@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Steve Herold Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2018 12:37 AM To: BANAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BANAT-L] Happy Birthday Bob Madler Happy Birthday 89th Bob!! Bob founded the Banat mailing list on January 19, 1995. For the first couple of years of operation the list was hosted by a local ISP and Bob funded the operation. The list quickly became quite popular and looking back at some of the early messages it is amazing how much we have learned about the Banat since 1995. Thank you Bob! I found Bob on the internet just before he started the list and learned that Bob's mother was my mother's favorite aunt. I'm curious how many on the list now have been subscribers since before 2000? Dave Dryer, I suspect you were on the list before 2000. 3. We owe Bob an massive debt for initiating an incredible resource.   For some of us it gave a new focus to our lives and expanded our world in totally unanticipated and unexpected ways.  The LIST played such an important roll in our lives, especially in the early years that it may be worth while recording some of the landmarks along the way.  This can only be a highly personal view of the events and my apologies for overlooked items.Rootweb is down now(that's timing!) so the archives are not available but I believe I subscribed to the list was about 1998 as soon as I could get an internet connection.  John Movius, although not a Banater was a big behind the scenes booster of the list in the early days.  In those early days we were such amateurs.  In our defense there was very little accessible, published material.  A few knowledgeable people were involved in the early days, Monika Ferrier, Franz Quint, Norbert Neidenbach and Uwe Morres come to mind, and perhaps others who had personal experience with the Banat.  These tended to drop away as they recognized how little most of us understood of Banat matters.Initially, the list tended to be dominated by descendants of the North Dakota Banat colony.  The usual problem presented to the list in those days was attempts to determine the Banat village of origin and interpreting scrambled hand-me-down family notes.  I include myself in this search for a village of origin for my Banat grandmother. My memory is a bit fuzzy on the timing but in time Chris Lammesfeld took over the administration of the LIST from Bob.  This task was, in turn, undertaken by Steve Herold who, when he moved back to ND handed the job to the current administrator, David Preston.  There were a few bumps in the road along the way which stirred the pot but it is difficult to remember now what they were all about.A second list, DVHH, which largely duplicated the Banat list appeared 10-15 years ago and a multilingual mailing list created by the, German Donauschwaben group, the AKdFF, has become a widely used resource. .On a personal note, the Banat list has provided me with a second satisfying career in retirement.Dave Dreyer                 On Thursday, January 11, 2018 2:41 PM, Edward J.
