In an article written by Susan Clark, I read the following: Last updated 01/22/97 History of German Settlements in Southern HungaryThe city of Ulm, in the Swabian region of the German states, was a common point of departure. From Ulm, settlers boarded boats called "Ulmer Schachtel" and sailed the Danube to Vienna, where they registered for their land. I do not have Susan Clark's email address, and if I did, I would ask her if there are any records of these Swabians' departure including lists of names and homelands. if anyone can connect me to Susan, I would be grateful. and I would appreciate an email from Susan if she is still connected to this group email. I just came back from a Danube River Cruise. The Danube is a swift flowing river with many locks as it drops quite a bit from it's source to the end. How did these people steer/stop this Ulmer Schachtels boats ? I'm sure there were rapids, rocks trees etc. in their path.
