    3. Our Banat Mailing List, administrator/owner, Steve Herold, has suffered a devastating loss. The recent sad news of the death by cancer of Steve's wife Adele (geb. Biel), has now come to us. Theirs was a late marriage of five years of fellow Banaters. See, http://bismarckfuneralhome.com/obituaries/adele-lindsay/ One can imagine this has effected Steve's life to a profound degree. Steve says it is time to give up management of the Banat List. Arrangements have been made to turn list management over to David Preston, who has the creation of a number of Banat themed websites to his credit. Steve not only managed the Banat list but is largely responsible for establishing the traditional annual meeting of Banaters in Mt Angel Oregon. Steve's passion, aside from promoting the list, was Banat/German food and other cultural matters. Back and forth list discussions of food tended to be lengthy with Steve taking a major roll. The Banat List was established by Robert Madler when internet access for most people was relatively rare. The first entry in the Banat list archives is dated 1980. In the initial years there were only a few messages each month. By 1997 100-200 messages/month were being processed and there were about 300 subscribers. In May 1997 Bob gave up the List management and turned the job over to Chris Lammesfeld. Chris, in turn, transferred, the list management over to Steve about 2004. One sometimes forgets how far we have come and how little access we had to firm information in the early days. Many messages in the early days centered around unscrambling mangled spelling of Banat place names. Due to the lack of family books few inquiries resulted in a supply of solid family data or a solution to family history problems. In this early period one has the impression that the North Dakota Banaters were the main drivers of the list. In this early period there was a cadre of dual language participants who had first hand knowledge of the old country. Some names which come to mind, were Rick Heli(Mountain View, California), Uwe Morres(Heidelburg), Monika Ferrier(Siebenburgen authority), Franz Quint(now Professor of Information Theory at Technical Hochschule Karlsruhe) , Sue Clarkson(author of the Johannisfeld Family book), Tom Schneider, Robert Zink and likely others who I've momentarily forgotten. These experts helped give a sense of authority to the list. As time went on list members developed contacts and friendships with German and Romanian researchers and research organizations. These contacts were facilitated by communication through the list and sometimes resulted in acquisition of Banat records from Romanian and Serb archives. Presently the number of subscribers to the list fall in the range of 500-600 members Dave Dreyer .

    3. Thank you, Dave Dreyer, For giving us the information on Steve's Adele passing away. This will be truly a great loss to STEVE HEROLD. We/I are sorry to hear that Steve will no longer look after this nifty genealogical website. Our/my greatest THANK-YOU for all his great contributions. We for sure will miss Steve, even though he looked after us only from afar in the last few years. Its wonderful, though, that DAVID PRESTON will take over looking also after the Banat-L with all his other great DS computer involvement. Glad to have you, David Preston! Kind regards, Rosina T.
