The special exhibition at that time was billed to focus on the Donauschwaben settling in Vojvodina [the western Banat], but that actually took up a rather modest part of the exhibition. In actuality, it was a cultural exhibition encompassing the various ethnic peoples who occupied the Vojvodina region throughout the 18th to 20th Centuries - with some deeper history too. The exhibits were sensitively and thoughtfully executed, yet I still sensed a slight caricature aspect to the various ethnic identities. I wondered if we all tend to do this to other cultures in our own museums, and decided it is probably so. All in all, it was enriching to see the old artifacts and to experience the modern Serbian perspective on the distant past. > > Occasionally words can become heated on the Banat list from those most directly affected by past events. There remains plenty of bitterness to go around in the old Yugoslavia, but average people strive every day to set aside grievance in pursuit of a better life for themselves and their families. Whatever barbs may remain from the USA bombing their country just 16 years ago, everyone who my wife and I met in Serbia was cordial and even warm to guests who would bother to come see their land. It is not always easy to move ahead, but sincere efforts are afoot in Yugoslavia to learn from the past and see the future with fresh eyes. 3. Dear Friends, I visited the Novi Sad museum several years back and they had an exhibit on the Donauschwabs. It was very interesting. Also, there is an effort to have a museum in Vrbas (sp?) and they have quite a collection. I think they also have a building, but on my last visit it was not open. I managed to run into a young man and his Serbian wife who had made a reservation to see the collection, so I went in with them and his wife translated. They had a great collection. They had the contents of the pharmacy, all these beautiful old oak cabinets and bottles and jars. The ladies there were very friendly and welcoming. At that time they were hoping to open as a museum, but were working on the funding. T hat was my understanding. Anyhow, I agree with the message below that the Serbian people are moving forward. I have always been treated wit h great kindness and hospitality in Serbia. In 2008 I bought an old Donauschwab house in Ravno Selo, which was called Schowe. I have not visited in several years due to illness and other issues, but love my little village and my house and plum orchard is quite beautiful. If anyone reading this is going for a visit, I can help you meet up with some very nice Serbian people who I am sure would help you in your visit find anything you were looking for. At least they did for me. Evelyn Ziegler. If anyone wants to discuss this further my number s 561 308 3266. -----Original Message----- From: Rita Schiwanowitsch <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Sent: Tue, Apr 22, 2014 2:32 pm Subject: Re: [BANAT-L] Exhibition in Belgrade >From what I have heard from others, the exhibit in Belgrade will also focus ainly on the other Serbian ethnic groups that were also victims of Tito's egime.
