My father was asking me if I knew what had motivated his ancestors to emigrate from the Banat to America. I do not know the economic conditions or if there was something specific. My families emigrated from Pankota and Ujpanat (Neupanat) in 1903-1908 (Pfau, Plennert, Schmidt, Freisinger, Hauptman, Reznicsek, Doran, Engel, et al). What were the reasons others have found that their ancestors left for America. I also have another question - my ancestor came to America in 1903 at the age of 24. I am told he started playing the cornet at age 9 and played in the Kaiser's band. How would a man living in the Banat come to play in the Kaiser's band? Does anyone know of a resource where I could find information on this fact? Thank you, Denise in Oregon My genealogy related pages are at: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~merritt/ and http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~merritt/ The latter created using John Cardinal's Second Site
Denise -- I'm sure that my family who came in 1911 from Glogowatz (very near to Neupanat where my great grandmother was born - Magdalena Szander) came for better lives. They didn't own property. My grandfather tended the horses; granny worked at the farm; Her boss told her to leave before she was "attached" to anything. He loaned her the money for their travels -- and they paid him back. They came to New York City -- a little section in Queens called College Point where there were factories springing up. Many people got jobs. The area was already well settled from the 1890's and was a German town - language, customs, church, etc. They had friends there - some family members came a year or two earlier. I think that is what you will find when you receive more answers -- after the holidays are over. Hope you hear more. My family names in Neupanat are Szander/Lump/Hackert/Herzog to name a few -- more at roll call when it starts. Denise, the reasons for emigrating to the US (or Canada) are several: There were recruiters from US factories visiting towns in the Banat to sign up workers If one young man or family went to the US, they would write about land and job opportunities available, they would sponsor other family members or friends Land was in short supply in the Banat - large tracts of land were owned by the church, the government or by large landowners, it was getting harder and harder for a young man to get land The inheritance practices gave a man's land to his oldest son. The other sons had to seek work in other ways, either by working as a day laborer on someone else's land, by learning a trade, or moving to city to look for work in a factory Susan Clarkson --- On Fri, 1/1/10, Denise Sproed <denisesproed@onlinenw.com> wrote: From: Denise Sproed <denisesproed@onlinenw.com> Subject: [BANAT-L] Motivation for emigration & The Kaiser's Band To: BANAT-L@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, January 1, 2010, 2:38 PM My father was asking me if I knew what had motivated his ancestors to emigrate from the Banat to America. I wonder if the ancestor who played in the Kaiser's band was in the Austro-Hungarian military? I have a photo of band members with instruments wearing military uniforms among my Hungarian ancestor's photos. That would have been circa 1900. Vicki - Is there any way you could e-mail the photo? My grandfather was a musician and may have been in the Austro-Hungarian military.
