    3. Hello all again, I have a query about a brick wall I've encountered from the early days of Hatzfeld. My xth great-grandfather Joseph TILLER is listed in the Hatzfeld family book with just an approximate birth year of 1775 and no location. My intuition derived from various bits of circumstantial evidence says he was born in Hatzfeld, but the family book provides no distinct illumination on the matter. This leads me to wonder about the compiling of the family book and the availability of church records from Hatzfeld. Perhaps if I could read the preface in German these questions would be answered, but I'll ask anyway. In what year did the Hatzfeld birth/baptism registry begin? Since there are many family book entries from pre-1780s with no birth reference, I guess it was after that? If there is a registry from prior to the 1780s, I'd appreciate learning how I can access images from the original record. There may be helpful information recorded there and not carried over to the family book which would help with some mysteries. The same goes for a marriage registry. Thanks again, Charlie Tiller Charlie Tiller charlietiller@hotmail.com

    3. Charlie If Josef Tiller had been born in Hatzfeld then the exact birth date would have been given in the family book. The birth year of 1775 is likely a calculated value based on his age at the time of marriage. If he was born in the Banat it was likely in another locality. I would suggest that you have to search other localities especially those in which settlers were temperately located until either their houses were ready or they were assigned a permanent settlement. As the Hatzfeld family book indicates the records start in 1766. There are no Tillers in the various lists of the initial settlers Henz gives in the beginning of the book so obviously they came a bit later. As Philipp Lung indicated in a recent message to the Banat List the original records that Henz employed are now unusable. To access images from the original records it will be necessary to go to the archives in Temeswar and inspect them.
