Andy; As you probably know Istvan is the Hungarian name for the German Stefan. That aside, so far as I know, no one has copies of the Topolya church books(KBs) in the West. Either you go to whatever archives in which the Topoly KB are deposited. On the whole a not a very practical option. Or you find a local knowledgable family history researchers to do the work for you. Such research rates tend to be reasonable in the Banat. Nikolaus Horn, a well respected Banat researcher, is interested in the Buschbacher surname. You might consider contacting him with your problem. His address is; NikHorn@gmx.de Your guy was probably in the 29th Infantry regiment since Ban Topolya was situtat3d in the recruiting district of this regiment, but unless he was an officer there probably no records available. In any event you would have to contact the Kriegs archive in Wien to see if they have anything on him. . A little background first, when I was a teenager (1960's) I interviewed my Grandmother about our ancestry and only recently rediscovered my notes. What i am trying to find are the birth records and any other records for my Donauschwaben Grandparents. I supply the following information hoping it will help. Grandfather: Name: Stefan (aka Istvan, Stephen, Steve) Buschbacher Istvan is used on the ship passenger list to Ellis Island in 1908 and Stefan is used on his grave marker (1961) in Cincinnati, Ohio. He said he was from Banat Toploya, Hungary born 1882. My question is, any record that he was born in Banat Topolya or in another village? He also said he served in the Hungarian Army in 1900 - 1902 stationed on the Croatian coast. Are Austro-Hungarian military records available? He also had a brother named Michael who i think came over in 1906. Parent names are not known. Grandmother: Name: Anna Graf Siblings: Suzanna, Elizabeth, Matthew (aka Mathias), Andrew (aka Andy, Andreas) Parents: Michael and Catharina (nee Burkhardt, sp)? She said she was born in Hatzfeld, Hungary in 1893 Any record of her birth and were her parents born in Hatzfeld or someplace else? Also, any infornation on Buschbacher's born in or living in Chesterlek (sp). I know members of this branch of the family that left during the diaspora and now live in Germany. Thank you so very much for any information you can provide.
