As indicated below, Anton Stumpfhauser was a catholic in a protestant town so there are no church records on him. I checked the Apfeldorf (Jabuka) church records to no avail. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appriciated. Bellow is what I have found on Anton as written for my children. JohnWalter 2nd Great-Grandparents STUMPFHAUSER, Anton I (24) * 1850 + in Franzfeld, Banat oo Anna HITTINGER (25) * 1851 + Children, all born in Franzfeld, Banat, Hungary 1. Anton (12) * 6-6-1868 in Franzfeld, Banat, Hungary, + 1946 in Yugoslavian detention camp, oo Julianna STIER (13) * 1869 in Franzfeld, + 1946 in Yugoslavian detention camp, daughter of Adam STIER (26) and Julianna EBERLE (27). 2. Karl 3. Franz Anton STUMPFHAUSER I (24) was an inn keeper (Gastwirt). Anton's religion was Roman Catholic and the church of Franzfeld, which was a Protestant town, has no records of his birth or other data that are normally listed in church records. We don't know his birth date nor where he was born but family records indicate that he was born in 1850. The book "Geschichte von Franzfeld" (History of Franzfeld) indicates that soon after the occupation of Bosnia by Austria-Hungary in 1878 Anton a inn keeper took a business trip to Bosnia and there met a Bosnian Beg who told him about the opportunity the land offers and upon his return to Franzfeld Anton tried to recruit some people for a Bosnian venture, however, he was not successful in getting people interested. Geschichte von Franzfeld also indicates that when a the town library was opened in 1883, Anton Stumpfhauser donated two books to the library. No other donations were recorded so it must have been significant. The 1892 census of property owners lists Anton and his family living in house #97, (this house had the number 197 in later years) in the town square. The property had two structures on it and he owned 44 Joch farm land (about 68 acres) 5 horses, 9 cows, 17 hogs, various farm machinery and 34 bee hives. He also owned a Gasthaus (inn) at address #230 with three structures on the property. This indicates that Anton and his wife, Anna, were a prosperous couple. The census indicates that house #197 had eight residents, four male including himself, three female and a servant. The male residents were very likely himself, his three sons Anton II, Franz, and Karl and the three females, his wife Anna, daughter in-law Juliana the wife of son Anton and their daughter Anna born in 1891 and a male servant living with them. About 1895 or 1896 the town of Franzfeld opened a Kindergarten and the town rented house #198 from Anton Stumpfhauser, an indication that he bought this property after 1892 since it was not owned by him in the 1892 census of property owners. Sons Franz and Karl became professional officers in the Austro-Hungarian army and were supposedly stationed near Vienna while son Anton and his family helped to run the family enterprises. Rosalia (Rosl) Stumpfhauser (a great-granddaughter of Anton and Anna) told the author that her grandmother Juliana STIER told her that Franz and Karl lost a lot of money, gambling, and that their father, Anton I, had to sell most of his property to settle their debts. The Franzfeld chronicles indicate that the Gasthaus at address # 230 was sold to the Farmers Association prior to world war I. The sale of other property is not in the chronicles, however his son Anton still owned property #97 (now #197 in 1944) and some 24 acres of farmland and (4 Joch) about 5.5 acres vineyard. We don't know if the vineyard or the farmland was left to the son or if the son bought it. The son Anton also leased and run the Gasthaus, which had been sold to the Farmers Association, until about 1933. Son Franz was a first Lieutenant and died before world war I from pneumonia after some military exercises with his unit. Son Karl, a captain or major was badly wounded in 1916 on the Italian front and was crippled by the wound. He committed suicide with his own revolver because he did not want to live as an invalid. There is no record of when Anton and his wife Anna died, however, none of the grand-children remember them so they very likely died before 1928.
