My great grandfather emigrated from Kudritz in 1904. They sailed from Bremen on the SS Necker to Baltimore, where they settled. His wife followed a year later with their children. They made two return trips before to 1929, I assume for visits I am writing a family history, and I was wondering about the following: I assume they would have traveled to Bucharest (probably by wagon) to get a visa. >From there to Bremen by train. Does anyone know the distance? or average fare? Does anyone know the cost of various class tickets to America? Many thanks Roy Shiflet, Laurel, MD
Roy; Visas were not required for immigrants fram Austria Hungary to the U. S. before the First World War when leaving from a North Sea Port. All one needed was to buy a ticket and make a reservation with a local shipping representative. As I recall passage was around $15-20. You can check costs by looking at ads in any newspaper of the time which was read by immigrants. Just like the travel section of todays newspaper.
