    1. [BANAT-L] Martin Ritter *1783 in "Niskydorf"?
    2. Trish Stumpf Garcia
    3. Hello, I'm looking for some guidance from my fellow Banat researchers. According to Quieser's Katreinfeld-St. Georgen FB (1997), Martin Ritter (#2675) was born in 1783 in "Niskydorf". I was able to check the Nitzydorf FB (Schmadl, 2002) and besides not finding Martin Ritter, I found that the village was established and settled in 1785. Martin couldn't have been born there in 1783. There are Reitter families there and the Sammelwerk Stader book has a Jakob Ritter and family listed as going to Nitzydorf (#44225). So I'm thinking Martin was born before and his family moved to Nitzydorf when he was a toddler. Any thoughts on where else I can look for his birth... where would the settling families of Nitzydorf have lived before moving to the village in 1785? Or any gaps or flaws in my research/thinking? Martin married twice and had a bunch of kids in Kathreinfeld. I have the Kathreinfeld FB entries. Just trying to go backwards with him. Thanks in advance. Trish Stumpf Garcia

    1. Re: [BANAT-L] St. Hubert/Charleville Look-Up: BOHN
    2. William
    3. Mark, Michael Bohn is listed in both the older St. Hubert FB by Kuehn (as the son of Stephen Bohn and grandson of Michael Bohn or Bon) and I can scan those pages later and send to you. In the newer FB by Karen Dalton Preston and David Dreyer that covers later years, Michael has his own listing, but it appears he went to Schag and Paratz, with none of his 8 children being born in St. Hubert (so there is no detail, and you would have to consult the FBs for those villages). I can scan that page for you, too, and anything else that looks related--there are about 12 pages of Bohns, and a more detailed listing for Michael's father Stephen/Stefan, which shows children Franziska and Elisabeth born 1841 and 1843, respectively. When I can get the FBs and a scanner together, I'll send the pertinent pages to you! Is there anybody who could check the family book of Uivar for any Hupfel/Hipfl offsprings and send me related scans. The basis for the idea is linked with the move of a Decker family from Triebswetter to Ujvar before they immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1908. A girl (Margaretha) from this family (Josef Decker & Magdalena) married later on a Christian Hupfel and immigrated in 1910 into Cleveland. Massive amounts of money in cash was paid to agents of the Romanian secret service, the Securate. Over ca 20 year period amounts approaching 1 Billion DM(that?s with a B) were transferred to the Securata in order to secure exit visas for Donauschwabens and Siebenburger Saxons. The amounts demanded by the Romanians depended on the education level of those being released. The funds received appeared to go into the pockets of Romanian Security apparatus which was used to exercise control of the population on the same order as the Stasi in East Germany. 1. [BANAT-L] Institut fuer Donauschwabische Geschichte in Landeskunde
    2. Fred, I visited the Institut some years ago, perhaps, ca 2004. The institute is a serious academic dept. geared to research on various aspects of DS history and culture. If you go to their website you can get an idea of the expertise of various faculty. These are all busy people and you would likely need to have a well defined problem in order to get their attention(including an advance appointment). My contact was Josef Wolf who has considerable expertise in Banat military matters. I found their librarian very helpful, but, at least at than time, their library was limited in the usual material of interest to family history researchers. They has the usual card catalogue and their stacks were closed but the librarian had every thing within minutes. I think she didn’t have much else to do that day. This is all so long ago that perhaps matters are more developed. If you are interested in just DS family history you can’t do better than the AKdFF archives in Sindelfingen. If you go to Tuebingen let us know your impresions.
