Yes, Bob Happy Birthday! And thank you for your foresight and wisdom in starting this list. I joined by lurking in about 2000. Being a member of this list has opened up a whole new world for me. My Banat grandmother passed in 1996 so I did not have any way to ask any more questions about her remembrances. Through the wisdom of others on this list, I have learned more than can ever be expressed. (Although passing one of Dave Dreyer's tests is not possible.) Without all of you, here on the list, I would never have developed a passion for the culture, facts, and history of the Swabian regions. To all of you, let me express the biggest thanks! We owe Bob an massive debt for initiating an incredible resource. For some of us it gave a new focus to our lives and expanded our world in totally unanticipated and unexpected ways. The LIST played such an important roll in our lives, especially in the early years that it may be worth while recording some of the landmarks along the way. This can only be a highly personal view of the events and my apologies for overlooked items.Rootweb is down now(that's timing!) so the archives are not available but I believe I subscribed to the list was about 1998 as soon as I could get an internet connection. John Movius, although not a Banater was a big behind the scenes booster of the list in the early days. In those early days we were such amateurs. In our defense there was very little accessible, published material. A few knowledgeable people were involved in the early days, Monika Ferrier, Franz Quint, Norbert Neidenbach and Uwe Morres come to mind, and perhaps others who had personal experience with the Banat. These tended to drop away as they recognized how little most of us understood of Banat matters.Initially, the list tended to be dominated by descendants of the North Dakota Banat colony. The usual problem presented to the list in those days was attempts to determine the Banat village of origin and interpreting scrambled hand-me-down family notes. I include myself in this search for a village of origin for my Banat grandmother. My memory is a bit fuzzy on the timing but in time Chris Lammesfeld took over the administration of the LIST from Bob. This task was, in turn, undertaken by Steve Herold who, when he moved back to ND handed the job to the current administrator, David Preston. There were a few bumps in the road along the way which stirred the pot but it is difficult to remember now what they were all about.A second list, DVHH, which largely duplicated the Banat list appeared 10-15 years ago and a multilingual mailing list created by the, German Donauschwaben group, the AKdFF, has become a widely used resource. .On a personal note, the Banat list has provided me with a second satisfying career in retirement.Dave Dreyer On Thursday, January 11, 2018 2:41 PM, Edward J. I joined a short time after the list started. I joined because Bob found a Deschu on his family tree. He did some searching and found my daughter. When he contacted her, she told him he had hit the Mother-Lode in Deschu research. But she referred him to me. I’ve been at it since 1977 after watching Roots in tv. Bob was an angel who taught me so much. The list he started has been inspirational for so many people. Thanks Bob and 89 (!) Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday Bob! Like so many other researchers, I will be forever in your debt for starting this list. I’ve been a subscriber since 1996 (or maybe 1995). So my heartfelt gratitude goes to Bob Madler, Steve Herold, Dave Dreyer, and to everyone who has worked on and contributed to the list over the years. I could never have done ANY of my research without you. Happy birthday Bob Madler wish you the many Canadian list members as well. A great thank-you from us also, that you started the Banat-L! Myself, I probably joined this fine group of researchers around the year 2000. Best of New Years greetings, Rosina T. A first cousin is trying to research his dad’s side of the family. Do any of his names or dates ring a bell for any of you? Any suggestions would be welcome. “I am still planning to visit the Budapest area around the 5-10 May time. I re-read the Mat 26 1999, letter from Aunt Jule, to Sister Joanne Patton. It mentioned visiting with Valarie (has two sons). How is Valarie related? I think you sent me her phone number, but I am not sure how to call it or how to introduce myself. Did you find any other "sipos" family? I understand this is a commom last name. I am working on the Sipos family tree with Ancetry.comhelp. I need info on Grandma Sara Sipos. I know her maiden name (Czerna) and she was Grandpa Michael Sipos second wife. Do you know where Sara was born and grew up? The names of the villages, states/parishes/countries have changed over the years. Do you have any info on Michael's first wife? I think her maiden name was Spanyo? In a 1983 letter from Julianne Sipos, she noted Grandfather Mihaly (Michael), born 1868 in Tiszamele, married Erszebet Terebszi, who bore Joseph (NMN) Sipos in 1896, and Alexander Sipos in 1902. Do you have any info on Michael (1868) parents? I am starting to uderstand why geneology is so hard to understand. Please help clarify, Tom” Hugs Cathy Deschu (List member since forever)
Happy Birthday 89th Bob!! Bob founded the Banat mailing list on January 19, 1995. For the first couple of years of operation the list was hosted by a local ISP and Bob funded the operation. The list quickly became quite popular and looking back at some of the early messages it is amazing how much we have learned about the Banat since 1995. Thank you Bob! I found Bob on the internet just before he started the list and learned that Bob's mother was my mother's favorite aunt. I'm curious how many on the list now have been subscribers since before 2000? Dave Dryer, I suspect you were on the list before 2000. Steve Herold
