    3. Diane & Ed, Although I don't have "older" info on Franz Grebeldinger, I did want to offer that Ed and I are second cousins. I just searched the older Banat posts and realized I missed your post last October looking for info on Franz Grebeldinger. The first wife of Franz Grebildinger, Helen Gasko [Ed's grandmother], is a sister of my grandmother, Magdalena [Vilma] Gasko. Of the five children in this Gasko family, three relocated to the Detroit area and two remained in the New York/New Jersey area. I think that there must have been some "extra" connection between Ed's mother, Isabell Grebeldinger Budd Rasmussen and my mother, Eleanor Vanek Jacobs [first cousins], even though my mother left New York City with her family before 1920. I recall that when I found Isabell's obituary a few months after she passed away in 1998 and told my mother, she was quite sad. I have Gasko family info to share, if you would like. This includes our immediate Gasko family as well as  efforts to connect Gasko's from Pardan who were ancestors of a number of older Banat list subscribers. Dave Dreyer, who responded to your Banat photo post, was instrumental in providing info & incentive to get the Gasko connection effort going a number of years ago [thanks again, Dave!]. I also have a possible idea on where to search for more Grebeldinger's [Detroit/Wyandotte area]. I suggest we take more detailed communication off-list. My email is jerry_jacobs at comcast.net Thanks for your post, Jerry Jacobs

    3. Konak (Kanak) was colonized by Roman Catholic Bulgarians (Pavlikeni) around 1830. It is the same ethnic group you will find in Dudeștii Vechi (Óbesenyő, Altbeschenowa) and some other places in Banat. 500 Bulgarians arrived in Konak at the time and Konak was never German, although there could be some German families there, naturally. Konak was parochially covered by Boka, which was populated by Croatians in 1801 and 1821. Konak got its own parish, I think in late 1890's (I can check). I often asked myself which sources were used for the purpose of writing of Setschan FB ... over the years, a number of people asked me to research certain periods in Setschan parish records available in Serbia, so something is probably missing ... 3. Dear List members, In my research on the many Hupfel, dispersed all over, I did run into one family which is found in the Pardan family book. However, this couple does not origin in Pardan; only their kids died there between 1877 and 1890. So far, there is no hint where the family came from. Has any of you a clue. The first name - Friedrich is not very typical for Banaters in my family and for newly arrived ones the time (year) is rather late. There were substantial gaps in the KB data Karl Benz used to write the Setschan FB.  I find the marriage entry of Michael in the Dolatz family bookGraebeldinger Michael, son of Franz Grabeldinger and Eva Meng*ca. 1858 Setschanoo 29 Nov 1883 DolatzSchulz Anna, dau of Mathias Schulz and Katharina Ruppert*18 Jun 1864 DolatzObviously someone has made an arithmetic error here.  In cases of inexact birth dates as we have for Michael(1858 or 1868) the approximate birth date is arrived at by subtracting the age from the death date.  In this case I would think that the 1868 date is correct since it is very rare to find a first marriage where the wife is older than the husband. One now finds the Franz Grebeldinger and Eva Meng family in the Stetschan family book.Grebeldinger Franz, *1834 Kanak                        +22 Oct 1913 Setschan1oo 14 Jul 1855 Kathreinfeld Meng Eva, dau of Nikolaus Meng and Christina Schneider*13 Aug 1835 Kathreinfeld1 Stefan                *1865 Setschan         +25 Jul 1915 Setschan2 Nikolaus             *27 Dec 1867 Setschan3 Anna Ludmilla              *15 Sep 1870 Setschan4 Johann                      *25 Mar 1874 Setschan2oo 1 Jul 1883 SetschanMassong Franziska, dau of Josef Massong and M A Schubert*1853 Sartscha Michael is missing from the above list of kids.  Either he was born somewhere else or there is a gap in the Setschan records.  There is a gap in the above list of kids where he would fit nicely in 1868.I have never run across any Banaters from Kanak.  According to the Donaushwaebisches Ortsnamenbuch it is located a bit south of Gr Betschkerek.  There is no family book for Kanak. 3. Hello Rosina, thanks for sharing! What a story! I am practicing my schlecht Deutsch and I enjoy this "medical thriller". Unfortunately, I do not feel comfortable as I would usually would since I had 3 "flu-like" episodes in this winter season. Pretty eerie to read about the 3 days lasting flu resembling condition that knocked out soldiers in training camps in USA with severe symptoms at the early stages of development of the pathogen ... it is what a lot of people experienced this season in our region. Not that I am implying something but I just feel awkward. :) Really frightening things are that after hundred years, there are still so many unknowns about this pandemic. And the speed of spreading ... unparalleled! This paragraph is like taken out of a script for some disaster movie: "Dann passiert etwas, was Seuchenmediziner bis heute nicht erklären können. Unsettling! Speaking of movies, I could find only one that was based on this catastrophic pandemic event - Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen from 1999. God save us from flu ... and some other things ;) Greetings from Serbia On Wed, Mar 7, 2018 at 4:47 PM, Rosina <rosinatschmidt@gmail.com> wrote: > > Hello, > > Its good to have the Banat-L online again! > > Yesterday, 100 yers ago was the first victim of an epidemic registered, > that in the end had more deaths than both World Wars together. Below is the missing text. =====> I'm stuck on the following 4 events. As said below, no records of these events were found in 'obvious' FBs or KBs for the locations mentioned. Maybe they're in filials of these locations, or maybe some events like the marriages were civil? Birth/baptism of my GGF Michael Gruber b. about 1825, possibly from the Ittebe or Pardan areas. He's not in the Pardan FB of church index. Local history claims he was from Alsace, but he was too young for those mid 1700s migrations to Hungary, as in the Stader books; maybe they meant his ancestors were from there? Marriage of my GGPs Michael Gruber (as above), to Anna Wagner b. 1841 in Pardan. Marriage possibly in the late 1860s in Pardan, after which, and where, they had most of their kids. Their marriage isn't in the Pardan FB or church index since marriages apparently only go to 1835. They died in Georgeshausen in 1901 and 1902. Marriage of my GPs Anton Gruber (last kid of my above GGPs) b. 1881 in Georgeshausen, to Eva Heinrich b. 1881 in Setschanfeld. Local history claims they married in 1905, one would think in the Georgeshausen/Setschanfeld/Gross Gaj/Zichydorf area, but their marriage isn't in the Gross Gaj/Zichydorf FBs or KBs. I have what looks like a studio photo of them taken in then Versecz, likely about the time they married in 1905, but their marriage isn't found there either. They emigrated as married to Canada in 1906 with no kids. Marriage of Michael Gruber (jr., another son of my above GGPs) b. 1875 in Pardan, to Margaretha Schmidt b. 1877 in Setschan. They likely married in about the late 1890s before emigrating as married to Canada in 1903 with no kids. The Setchan FB mentions a questionable marriage (oo?) of Margaretha but it doesn't say to who, when or where. There's also an infant death Anna (b. 1898, d. 1899) in Setschan. Maybe Anna was illegitimate, so the father isn't listed? Any help/guidance on these events is appreciated. Thx ...
