    1. Re: [BANAT-L] [ADMIN] Beware of Scam
    2. Our daughter recently was a victim of the same scam, except it was done through her Facebook account. She didn't know until Facebook removed her page and is still waiting for a response from Facebook. Our son said it was done through use of a "bot", since all money requests were done at the exact moment (1 pm), and all people linked to her page who happened to be online at that time received a money request. Kathy Bevier In a message dated 2/26/2010 11:52:57 A.M. Central Daylight Time, steveds@heroldtech.com writes: Scam Warning!!! A couple of subscribers to the list recently received a message from a former subscriber stating how he was someplace in Europe and had been robbed and needed money to get back home. The person is no longer a Banat subscriber so the email message to the list bounced. This a scam that has been going on for a couple of years. Somehow the email address for a person is hijacked....someone gets control of the address and password, changes the password and can do an amazing amount of damage given what they find in the email and email address book that are stored on a server....NOT your local PC. These messages will generally originate from addresses such as yahoo.com, gmail.com and hotmail.com. Never respond to the message....the person is either already aware of the problem or will not be able receive your message since he/she has been cut off from their email because the password was changed. Sending a message to them only gives the hijacker a live email address. I've seen a couple of these this year and three last year. In the last case I knew the person and called him. He was already aware of the hijack and was jumping through all kinds of hoops trying to minimize the damage. A good way to reduce the possibility of one of these hijackings is to make certain you use a strong password, i.e., one which contains at least one or two upper case letters and one or two numbers. And including a special character such as ! or # will also make it stronger. Also make certain that you do not store passwords in any messages that are left on the server. You can imagine the damage a person could do knowing the passwords to your bank account. Regarding the hotel, yes the Keizer Inn is booked out by now, but it might be a good idea to find out first if they have any cancellations: http://www.keizerrenaissanceinn.com/ The other hotel is Red Lion Hotel in Salem, where we stayed previously: http://redlion.rdln.com/HotelLocator/HotelOverview.aspx?metaID=42 Just as last year only the dinner is planned for Thursday, the 16th of September and there will be nothing planned for Sunday, the 19th, in order to give us a whole day to experience what Mt. Angel itself has to offer. For their schedule please see: http://www.mtangel.org/ Looking forwards to see you there. Rosina Vancouver Island > Hi Rosina, > > I would like to make my plans for Mt. 1. [BANAT-L] “Linguistic Anthropology” in the Banat
    2. Marilyn Fedewa
    3. Recently, for what it’s worth, I ran across an interesting – although very academic – PhD dissertation on some aspects of linguistic anthropology and multilingualism in the Banat. If I missed it before, and this is old news, sorry. If not, and if any listers have time to read it, and have any thoughts, I’d be very interested in your reactions. It is titled “Language Ideologies in the Romanian Banat” by Petterei Laihonen, a 2009 PhD dissertation at the University of Jyvaskyla., and it can be found at https://jyx.jyu.fi/dspace/bitstream/handle/123456789/20324/9789513936082.pdf;jsessionid=E5FBDA0A43474629E78790046B175153?sequence=1 In it, Laihonen says, “This is the first study of the Banat using modern sociolinguistic framework. From the perspective of language ideologies, my work has drawn attention to this neglected, but important region.” All the best, Marilyn

    3. Jean- Not an easy one to find. I spotted 3 close to APFEL but none of the information looks like a match. ********** I found a Catharina APFL in the index of married women. She was the wife of Jacobus VEBER (or WEBER) - entry V151: Jacobus VEBER *7 Jun 1840 (Billed house #168), son of Ferd. Veber & Ang. Catharina might also have come from Pesszak. If I'm reading the abbreviated entry correctly, that notation was when they recorded the birth of her 10th child (also Catharina). ********** There's a listing for Phillipus APL (A127) without much information. Phillipus APL oo Margaretha (unknown last name) They had 4 children, born between 1776 and 1782 in Billed. ********** There's a listing for Petrus APPLER (A132): Petrus APPLER *1846-1848 < Lovrin +22 Oct 1872 oo 4 Jul 1870 Barb. SCHAKMANN *28 Apr 1848 (later remarried to Martin Steiner) Two children: Franciscus and Barbara. Peter's parents were Jos. Appler and Magdalena Strupp (no further information about them). 3. Harold- Glad to help! Good - the 1851 date matches the OSB. Angela's parents were Casp[er?] Preissinger and Barbara Pritz (ah, there's the Pritz connection!). There's no information on their parents. Casper Preissinger *1816-1820 [i.e. uncertain year, no location] +16 Jan 1852 in Billed at age 36 oo 31 Jan 1843 in Billed at age 23 for both Casper and Barbara Barbara Pritz *1820 [no location] Children: 1. Susanna *16 Dec 1843 Billed +25 Sep 1893 oo 25 Nov 1862 to Jac. Frey [entry F379 - they had 4 children] 2. Angela *15 Aug 1851 Billed oo 7 Jan 1889 to Joa. Pratsko [entry P551] The mismatch in Casper's ages at marriage and death are why the birth year is uncertain. Some other pieces of information. Joannes Pratsko was a widower when he married Angela. It looks like his first wife was Agnes Linye. There's no further data about her. Joannes's parents were Joan[nes] Pratsko and Marg[aretha] Sturm. In Gr. Jetscha, he lived in house #498. When he married Angela and when Antonius was born they lived in Billed house #499, and in #449 when Angela was born (assuming that's not a typo). --- Eric -----Original Message----- From: banat-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:banat-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Harold Bratsko Sent: Friday, March 12, 2010 6:55 PM To: Banat_List Subject: [BANAT-L] Pratsko/Preuszinger Eric, First of all I thank you for your time and effort very much ! 2. Eric Benshetler
    3. Harold- I was poking through some old Banat mail and came across your inquiry. Hopefully you've received more information in the intervening 4 years. Anyway, in addition to the information that Dave Dreyer sent you from Billed OSB entry p551... Angela PREUSZINGER also had another child (in OSB entry p554) when she was single: Catharina PREUSZINGER *19 Mar 1879 oo 22 Feb 1903 to Mathias STEUER. (Catharina's godfather was Nicolaus PRITZ [entry p609]. Angela had earlier been godmother to Nicolaus' 8th child Angela PRITZ *2 Dec 1876.) Mathias STEUER and Catharina emigrated to Trenton 2 years after they were married. The OSB cites information from Dave's passenger list extractions for this. Here's the entry from Dave's list: >>> STEIER Mathias -[S360]- Age: 26 -From: Billed -DtAr: Tuesday, 25 Apr 1905 - To: Trenton, NJ -Via: Bre/NY -Ship: Kronprinz Wilhelm -Note: Accompanied by wife Katharina 26. Going to join cousin, Wendel Gautuer [*1 Feb 1870, son of Josef Steuer and Magdalena Tritz, oo to Katharina Preiszinger]. <<< One other interesting tidbit is that Joannes PRATSKO appears to be several years younger than Angela. His birthdate (in Gr. Jetscha) is listed as *9 Dec 1865, which would make him 14 years younger than Angela. --- Eric Benshetler -----Original Message----- From: Dave Dreyer [mailto:ddreyer@pacbell.net] Sent: Monday, February 20, 2006 12:42 AM To: BANAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BANAT-L] Dates Harold; >From the Billed family book.
